World Cup skiers promised at least 10% rise in race prize money next season
Superstars in Alpine skiing earn the most — Mikaela Shiffrin and Marco Odermatt each made a record $1 million in race prize money in the 2023 season — but top racers in ski cross and snowboard disciplines typically earn less than 100,000 Swiss francs ($123,000) for the winter.
'It is clear that we still have a lot to do when it comes to rewarding our athletes as they deserve,' FIS President Johan Eliasch said in a statement.
FIS said it will guarantee a 10% increase and hopes that race organizers add an extra 10% 'on a voluntary basis.'
'This is an important step, but only another one in a long way ahead,' Eliasch said.
In ski jumping, Daniel Tschofenig topped the men's prize money list last season with 372,550 Swiss francs ($459,000), and women's leader Nika Prevc earned almost 130,000 Swiss francs ($160,000).
The most lucrative venue is storied Austrian resort Kitzbuehel which had a total prize fund last season of 1 million euros ($1.15 million) across a three-race weekend for men.

CHICAGO (AP) — The Boston Red Sox are taking a deliberate approach with Alex Bregman in his return from a quad strain. So far, everything is going smoothly. Bregman played in consecutive games on Friday and Saturday for the first time since he got hurt in May. He was out of the lineup for Sunday's series finale against the Chicago Cubs, but he connected for a big pinch-hit homer in Boston's 6-1 victory. 'We got to be smart,' Bregman said. 'I'm back probably a month and a half, maybe a little less, early than we expected. The leg's feeling great. We're checking in every day pre- and postgame and just monitoring it.' The 31-year-old Bregman spent most of the game in the batting cage with assistant hitting coach Dillon Lawson, working on his positioning at the plate. 'After being away for like two months, kind of just standing more vertically and I wasn't starting in the same position,' said Bregman, a two-time World Series champion with Houston. Chiefs and defensive end George Karlaftis agree to 4-year, $93M contract, AP source says
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs and defensive end George Karlaftis have agreed to a four-year, $93 million contract that includes $62 million guaranteed, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press on Sunday. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal, which locks up one of the Chiefs' best young defensive players on the same day that they report to training camp at Missouri Western, is still pending a physical. It is the second high-profile contract that Chiefs general manager Brett Veach has finished off in the past week. He signed Pro Bowl right guard Trey Smith to a four-year, $94 million extension on Tuesday. Karlaftis, a first-round pick in the 2022 draft, has started 44 of his 49 regular-season games for the Chiefs. His best season came two years ago, when he had 10 1/2 sacks while starting every game, and he had eight sacks in 16 games last season.
