Celtic fans defy club with unsanctioned league title street party
Thousands of supporters gathered after watching their team list the Scottish Premier League trophy following a 1-1 draw with St Mirren.
The club had issued a statement during the week encouraging its fans not to take part in unofficial post-match celebrations on Saturday, amid fears of disorder on the same day as an Orange Order event.
However, the request was ignored as a huge crowd gathered in the May sunshine to celebrate Celtic's 55th league title.
The unofficial street party has become something of an annual ritual in Glasgow, with Celtic winning the past four league titles.
However celebrations this year will clash with the Orange Order's VE Day 80th anniversary commemorations in the city.
Fans defied the club's plea not to gather (Image: NQ/Gordon Terris) A heavy police presence was observed in the area as fans gathered. Police made 19 arrests at the celebration in May last year, and four officers were injured during disorder at the impromptu gathering at Glasgow Cross.
The club said on Friday that although it understands previous unofficial celebrations held in Glasgow were 'well intentioned', it is discouraging fans from attending this year due to concerns from local residents and city officials.
Police were deployed to the Trongate (Image: NQ/Gordon Terris) In a statement released on the club's website, a spokesperson said: 'Outside of Celtic Park, while we want to celebrate in style, we want to do so mindful of others and in a safe and responsible manner.
'The club has engaged in recent months with local community and residents' groups, many of which include Celtic supporters, and it is clear that large gatherings in public spaces, even when positive and celebratory, can cause issues for those living and working in these areas.
'While previous celebrations involving Celtic fans have been well intentioned, unfortunately, as local community stakeholders have made clear in recent weeks, some of these have led to severe congestion and difficulties for emergency services, residents and local businesses.
'Further, without the planning, facilities and infrastructure of an organised, licensed event, the number of supporters present at previous gatherings has become so great that the safety of fans has also become an issue of real concern.'
It added: 'The club encourages supporters to follow the advice issued recently by local community stakeholders in this regard.
'For all of these reasons, the club would encourage supporters not to attend unlicensed large public gatherings, which do not have safety planning, facilities or infrastructure for supporters attending.'
The celebration came after Celtic lifted the league trophy (Image: PA) On Thursday, Police Scotland Assistant Chief Constable Mark Sutherland issued a similar plea.
He said: 'We are aware of concerns regarding events in Glasgow on Saturday with large crowds expected to gather.
'I'd like to reassure the public we are working closely with Glasgow City Council to minimise disruption to the wider community and a proportionate policing plan is in place, with a focus on public safety.
'We respect the right to public assembly, however it is everyone's responsibility to ensure their behaviour does not negatively impact businesses or those looking to enjoy our city.
'Please do not gather in large groups and be respectful of those around you.
'If you are planning to visit Glasgow city centre on Saturday, it will be much busier than normal. There is also likely to be increased usage of public transport, so make travel arrangements in advance.'

Hundreds march on Glasgow's streets for VE Day Orange Walk
Fans have gathered on the same day as an Orange Walk in Glasgow (Image: NQ/Gordon Terris) A Glasgow City Council spokesperson said on Thursday: 'We want supporters of every team in Glasgow to be able to celebrate their successes but ask fans – including those visiting – to please avoid disruptive mass gatherings at Merchant City/Trongate and other public places.
'These events and others like them have consistently led to disorder – causing significant disruption for the local community and businesses.
'Damage to buildings and infrastructure robs the public purse of hundreds of thousands of pounds that would otherwise be spent on the essential services we all rely on.
'Enjoy trophy day, but respect the city and your neighbours. Do not attend unsafe and disruptive gatherings in public places like Merchant City/Trongate.'
The gathering has become an annual ritual for some fans (Image: NQ/Gordon Terris) Celtic said the club have been trying to come to an arrangement with city officials so fans have a designated venue to flock to for matchday celebrations.
The club spokesperson said: 'Celtic has been trying for some time to work with city stakeholders to seek to discuss and develop plans, which might allow for a more suitable venue for celebratory events away from Celtic Park.
'We can assure our fans that we will continue to do so, as we strive to develop appropriate arrangements for our supporters in the future, as is the case in other cities.
'As we enjoy our fourth successive Premiership title, let's celebrate safely and responsibly.
'Everyone at Celtic thanks you sincerely for your continued support.'

How does Payton Pritchard feel about the Celtics' busy offseason?
Boston Celtics point guard Payton Pritchard is in a stable place at the moment. He's on a relatively cheap contract and cemented how valuable he is to the C's after winning Sixth Man of the Year last season. And while the 27-year-old stayed put this offseason, that wasn't the case for many of his teammates. Celtics starters Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis were traded away this summer, while backup center Luke Kornet walked in free agency. Veteran big man Al Horford is also expected to leave the C's in the coming weeks, casting plenty of uncertainty around Pritchard and company for the 2025-26 season. In spite of this, the sixth-year Celtic didn't sound too worried during a conversation with NBC Sports Boston's Chris Forsberg. He discussed the recent roster changes, a new NBA rule that he helped create, and more on the Celtics Talk Podcast. Listen to "Havlicek Stole the Pod" on: Spotify: iTunes: YouTube:

Why Sixers rookie VJ Edgecombe is watching highlights from Celtics' Derrick White
The Boston Celtics and Philadelphia 76ers have one of the oldest rivalries in the NBA, but that doesn't mean they can't learn from each other. In fact, Sixers rookie VJ Edgecombe is already studying the Celtics, viewing highlights of guard Derrick White to see how he can thrive as a two way player. The Big 12 Freshman of the Year is the same position as White and nearly the same height, generating some easy comparisons. Edgecombe joined Sixers teammate Paul George on the "Podcast P" show and discussed how White, ex-Celtic Jrue Holiday, and 2025 NBA champion Lu Dort are influencing his defensive game. "I watch defensive clips," he said. "I'm watching Jrue Holiday, Derrick Dort. I'm watching them. Just trying to learn both ends of the floor. They're the main people I watch." It's no secret that the third overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft has two-way potential. Edgecombe's athleticism helps him on both sides of the floor, as he averaged 15 points per game during his freshman year while recording 68 steals, the most of any frosh in the history of Baylor basketball. White, who was the second-to-last pick of the first round back in 2017, wasn't as highly regarded as Edgecombe in college. However, the former D-II hooper developed into a two-way stud and helped the Celtics win it all in 2024. The injured 2025-26 Celtics are far from that title team at the moment, leaving the Sixers with the more palpable championship aspirations. But, Philadelphia isn't completely healthy either due to center Joel Embiid's lurking knee issues and Paul George's summer surgery. As a result, White and Edgecombe will be asked to step up for their respective squads next season. And since the Celtics and Sixers both inhabit the Atlantic Division, White and Edgecombe are destined for an on-court battle in the coming months. 'I back myself against any player' - USMNT star Auston Trusty embraces Champions League challenge with Celtic FC
Defender thriving under pressure of elite European competition Former Arsenal player believes in his ability to compete at highest level Celtic center back appreciates path from MLS to Champions League WHAT HAPPENED U.S. international Auston Trusty says he's loved every second of Champions League football since joining Celtic from Sheffield United in August 2024. The 26-year-old American defender believes his time in the Premier League and Championship prepared him well for facing top-tier opposition. 'I love every second. I mean I back myself against any player really," Trusty said on the Vamos podcast with Herculez Gomez. "Come out here playing the Premier League, now playing in the Champions League, you have to have your ability, you have to have the ability to back yourself mentally as well. Any chance I get to play with these guys and to play against these historic teams, I always go back to me as a little kid growing up, and just like this was not even reality, really! 'Like this was this wasn't even like possible for me to be here, living my dream day in day out be where I am at, where I'm at mentally and also physically, and it goes like wise as a player. I'm just, I'm living my life. I'm living my dream, man.' Trusty shared that the confidence in his abilities has been there since he was a little kid, just starting to play football, and while he's been through ups and downs, he continues to back himself. 'I don't think it starts there,' Trusty explained. 'I think it started since I was a little kid, all the are plenty of ups and downs. And I think through those moments through those times, I've slowly layered by layer of the layer, backing myself and showing myself my ability.' WHAT AUSTON TRUSTY SAID Trusty wasn't included on the U.S. men's national team roster for the 2025 Gold Cup, but the Celtic center-back has remained supportive of the program and believes the tournament was a valuable learning experience for the group. Trusty further touched upon the USMNT's Gold Cup summer and believes that while the team initially had a tough run, he thinks that they've learnt a lot and that the blocks are in place. 'Obviously, I would love to go and represent the country,' Trusty said. 'That's my entire dream. Any call up I can get, I'll be eager to take full advantage...I back coach back the team and obviously, you had some bad results. No one wants these results, but I think the team is just learning. He added, 'Some of those guys were key guys who have been on the team in the past, and they brought in some new people. So we're just finding our way, but I think we do have time. I think on the outside, it seems like, 'oh, what's going on?' But I think Poch really has a good idea what's going to happen, and he's still like building the blocks, but I think we're in a good spot.' The center back also praised Pochettino for the tactical knowledge he's brought to the setup, reflecting on his own experience in early camps under the Argentine. 'He called me in the first couple of camps, it was great, they were great. And I haven't had too much conversations [or been] in touch since then, but it's all good standing...I think the coaches have been really good and obviously they're highly qualified and experienced too," he said. 'Poch is an extremely experienced coach, so you know he knows what he's talking about, so to be in those environments, to put yourself in that environment to maybe adapt to doing certain things or do things, maybe, maybe you're not used to doing, it only benefits yourself. So I've only looked at that in a really positive way." THE BIGGER PICTURE Trusty signed for Celtic in the summer of 2024 and has since made 38 appearances for The Bhoys, scoring one goal and winning the Scottish Championship as well as the Scottish League Cup in his debut season. Not only that, he has earned four caps for the USMNT, making his debut in March 2023, with his last cap coming in November 2024. WHAT'S NEXT? Celtic's Champions League campaign provides Trusty with continued opportunities to establish himself at the elite level of European competition. The defender is currently a part of the club's preseason activities as he prepares himself for the 2025-26 season.
