Surge in UPI payments reduced cash usage: IMF

Time of India13 hours ago
NEW DELHI: The rise in UPI payments has helped reduce use of cash in India, a new paper by a team from IMF has said, while using proxies, such as cash withdrawal from ATMs and currency in circulation as a proportion of GDP.

"Since its launch in 2016, UPI has grown quickly, while some proxies for cash usage have begun to decline. UPI now processes more than 18 billion transactions per month and dominates other electronic retail payments in India. India now makes faster payments than any other country," it said. The paper has strongly backed interoperable payment systems, such as UPI, arguing that these systems allow seamless payments between users of different payment providers.
The ecosystem has now grown to reach over 600 banks and 200 apps. When UPI was launched, initially more than half the users flocked to their banks and accessed it through their bank apps as they trusted these entities. But, the paper said, over time, they moved to apps, possibly due to better quality, benefitting from the freedom to switch apps provided by interoperability.
Now, these apps dominates the space and among banks, the share of those choosing their banks is higher in case of private players than the public sector entities.

Charge-draining ETMs spell trouble for KSRTC in Kerala; plans afoot to install charging points in buses

THIRUVANTHAPURAM: KSRTC is in a fix over the battery-draining electronic ticketing machines (ETMs), which are crucial for cashless payment and live tracking of buses. The conductors are hesitant to use the machines as the new machines drain their battery quickly, defeating the purpose. With over 22 lakh passengers relying on KSRTC services daily, the corporation has been forced to incur additional expenses to keep the ETMs running. Frequent recharging has become necessary, adding to operational strain. ETMs have long posed issues for KSRTC, but conductors earlier managed with traditional ticket racks when machines failed. However, this backup is no longer viable as the corporation has grown increasingly dependent on ETMs following its digitisation efforts. KSRTC recently introduced travel cards, UPI payment options, and live bus tracking on select routes, further embedding ETMs into daily operations. A KSRTC official acknowledged the difficulties but stated that a workaround has been devised. "We cannot revert to the old system of issuing tickets. To ensure the ETMs remain operational, we've decided to install 24-volt charging points in 5,048 buses," the official said.

GST notices based on UPI data: Tax department

BENGALURU: Following reports of notices issued to small traders by the Commercial Tax Department, the state government clarified on Friday that the action was based on data collected from Unified Payments Interface (UPI) service providers to ensure compliance with Goods and Services Tax (GST) laws. Under the GST Act, in force since July 1, 2017, suppliers with an annual turnover exceeding Rs 40 lakh (for goods) or Rs 20 lakh (for services) are required to register for GST. This turnover includes both taxable and exempt goods and services, although tax is applicable only on taxable items. The department said while essential items like bread are exempt from GST, packaged snacks attract a 5% tax. It said UPI-based transaction data from 2021–22 to 2024–25 showed that many traders had received over Rs 40 lakh via UPI alone, excluding cash and other payment methods, indicating even higher total turnover. Based on this data, the department issued notices to traders. ENS
