Pat Freiermuth embraces chance to learn behind Mason Rudolph or Aaron Rodgers
As the Pittsburgh Steelers look to make 2025 the fifth straight year with a new starting quarterback at the helm, TE Pat Freiermuth is looking to make the most of the opportunity.
While most offensive players might be sick of having to readjust to a brand-new signal-caller every year, Freiermuth recently argued on The Christian Kuntz Podcast that it's actually been a good thing for him—as he's been able to learn new aspects of the game from both Ben Roethlisberger and Russell Wilson.
The big Steelers tight end even elaborated on what it would be like to learn behind Mason Rudolph in 2025—or even the rumored acquisition of four-time MVP Aaron Rodgers:
"Yeah, I mean, so like whoever we get—like if it's Aaron, like whoever it is—even Mason—like Mason has his things, like Aaron has his things. It's gonna be cool to learn from all these guys, so I just take it and embrace it just to kind of, you know, understand more of the game of football, because everyone sees it a different way."
Everyone definitely does see it in a different way—as Freiermuth's optimistic outlook couldn't have come at a more perfect time. It was recently reported that the Pittsburgh Steelers locker room may be growing disheartened by the lack of clarity surrounding the quarterback position in 2025.

Steelers named logical landing spot for 5-time Pro Bowler who could replace George Pickens

The Pittsburgh Steelers have yet to replace George Pickens. Sure, the Steelers traded for DK Metcalf earlier this offseason, but the team had a need at wide receiver before that move. The trade for Jonnu Smith definitely helps Pittsburgh's lackluster group of pass-catchers, but the wide receivers room remains shaky, at best. Roman Wilson, Robert Woods and Calvin Austin are all in line for significant roles, yet Wilson is unproven, Woods is on the down side of his career, and Austin has just one season of decent production (548 yards in 2024). Adding a veteran in free agency would be the move this team needs. As far as which veteran they should go after, Bleacher Report's Kristopher Knox suggests Amari Cooper. "Cooper would be a sensible target for the Pittsburgh Steelers, who are going all-in on the 2025 season with quarterback Aaron Rodgers," Knox explained. "Pittsburgh acquired wideout DK Metcalf early in the offseason but also traded receiver George Pickens after the draft." Cooper is coming off a down season in 2024, which has led to fears about a possible decline as he enters a season in which he's 31 years old. However, in the year prior, Cooper posted a career-high 1,250 yards, so he isn't that far removed from great production. So, what happened in 2024 that led to Cooper tallying a career-low 547 yards? In his defense, he did have bad quarterback play while with the Cleveland Browns, who had a struggling Deshaun Watson as their starter for all six games Cooper appeared in with the Browns. Then, Cooper had to acclimate to a new offense after being traded to the Buffalo Bills. He also suffered a wrist injury in Week 8 that needed surgery, but Cooper declined to get it, according to general manager Brandon Beane. With the Steelers clearly going for it in 2025, they should bring Cooper in to give their offense, which was the weakest link in 2024, a better chance to succeed. Even if he is a bit diminished, he'd still offer an upgrade for Pittsburgh and would be a perfect fit opposite Metcalf on the outside. That would also put less pressure on Austin and Wilson and would alleviate the need to depend on Woods. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Pittsburgh Steelers are gearing up for the start of the 2025 NFL season with Aaron Rodgers leading the way. After an offseason full of rumors surrounding the team and Rodgers, they finally came to terms on a one-year deal. Since signing his contract with the Steelers, Rodgers has announced that the upcoming year will be his last in the NFL. He's hoping to go out on top with a storied franchise and lead them back to the Super Bowl. Some believe that Rodgers can make that goal become a reality. Others don't expect the 2025 campaign to go as Pittsburgh is hoping. Read more: Steelers Insider Sounds Off After TJ Watt's Huge Extension James Harrison, a Steelers' legend, spoke out about Rodgers and revealed a brutal prediction for the end of the future Hall of Famer's career. He could see Pittsburgh releasing Rodgers in the middle of the season. "If [the Steelers] start losing and it's looking like they ain't gonna make above .500, I think it gets real ugly, real fast," Harrison said. "To the point where they may just be like, 'You know what, let's let this dude go midseason. For Aaron, let's just get him outta here and put one of these other quarterbacks in.' Mike [Tomlin] ain't going nowhere." It's possible that Harrison's worst-case scenario could happen, but it's unlikely. The Steelers struggling so bad that they choose to cut Rodgers would be a complete miss with a roster that should compete in the AFC. Last season with the New York Jets, Rodgers completed 63 percent of his pass attempts for 3,897 yards, 28 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. He looked back to full health after tearing his Achilles during the 2023 season in his first year with the Jets. DK Metcalf will be his top target, with names like Calvin Austin III, Robert Woods, and Roman Wilson also in the wide receiver room. Pat Freiermuth and Jonnu Smith will be featured at tight end, while both Jaylen Warren and Kaleb Johnson will lead the backfield. Many have suggested that the Steelers could consider signing either Keenan Allen and Amari Cooper. Either player would be a big-time upgrade for the Pittsburgh offense. All of that being said, the Steelers look the part of a contender. If Rodgers can be what he was last season or improve even a small amount, Pittsburgh should be a Super Bowl contender. 6 biggest Steelers salary-cap hits for 2025

The Pittsburgh Steelers have had one of the most unusual offseasons in franchise history. The front office was hyper-aggressive adding players via free agency and in trades. The team has also handed out its two largest contracts in franchise history. Last week, Pittsburgh made edge defender T.J. Watt the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history, and when they signed wide receiver DK Metcalf to the largest free-agent contract the team ever paid to a street free agent. Despite all this spending, the Steelers still have $17.654 million in cap space just days away from the start of free agency. We expect at least one more signing before players report to camp on Thursday. Here are the Steelers six biggest cap hits heading into camp to highlight just how much this front office focused on the defensive side of the football. 1 - EDGE T.J. Watt Watt's cap hit for 2025 is $23.368 million and his $41 million cap hit doesn't start until 2026. 2 - DT Cameron Heyward Heyward continues to perform at a high level, and his $19.65 million cap hit feels like a bargain. 3 - CB Jalen Ramsey $19 million is a huge investment for a comeback on the backside of his career and was the riskiest move of the offseason. 4 - EDGE Alex Highsmith Highsmith parlayed one big season into a huge contract that makes his cap hit for 2024 $18.6 million. 5 - LB Patrick Queen Queen came to the Steelers last season and signed a huge free-agent deal that is paying him $17.69 million this season. 6 - QB Aaron Rodgers We had to get to six before we landed on offense. Rodgers' one-year contract with the Steelers has a cap number of $14.15 million on a one-year rental. This article originally appeared on Steelers Wire: 6 biggest Steelers salary-cap hits for 2025
