Namibian founding president Sam Nujoma laid to rest
Nujoma died on Feb 8 at age 95 after spending three weeks at a Windhoek hospital. His widow, Theopoldine Nujoma, his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were in attendance. "He was a pillar of strength and a fountain of wisdom in the family. Although we could not have him around us all the time, we nevertheless understood very well that he embodied and personified the liberation struggle for Namibia's freedom and independence,' Nujoma's eldest son, Utoni Nujoma, said at a football stadium filled with mourners.
"Despite the fact that our hearts are engulfed by grief, we therefore celebrate his long and fulfilling life as well as his unwavering spirit when he dedicated his entire life to the liberation of our motherland and the entire African continent,' Utoni added. Namibia had observed a 21-day mourning period, with flags at half-staff. Nujoma's body was honored with a nationwide farewell as his remains were flown to seven regions including his village homestead of Etunda, in Okahao, allowing hundreds of thousands of Namibians to pay their respects.
Nujoma was the last of a generation of African leaders who led their countries out of colonial or white minority rule that included South Africa's Nelson Mandela, Mozambique's Samora Machel, Zimbabwe's Robert Mugabe, Tanzania's Julius Nyerere and Zambia's Kenneth Kaunda. His casket, draped in the Namibian flag with the title 'Founding president and Father of the Namibian nation' on it, was lowered concurrently with a 21-gun salute and a flypast by the Namibian Air Force, into the mausoleum at the Heroes Acre.
The Heroes Acre was constructed as a final resting place for Namibians who made meaningful contributions to the freedom enjoyed by the country today. Current Namibian President Nangolo Mbumba described Nujoma as an extraordinary human being. Mbumba said Nujoma exhibited the traits of a man driven by purpose and destiny.

TICAD provides an opportunity for a wide range of stakeholders, including African countries and development partners such as regional and international organizations, donor countries, the private sector, academia, and civil society organizations, to discuss how to respond to regional and international complex challenges. Strengthening Cooperation with Kuwait: TICAD plays a vital role in uniting various nations and organizations for promoting development in Africa, with Japan playing a central role in hosting the forum. Simultaneously, Japan has been actively developing cooperative relationships with key international partners to amplify the impact of our cooperation in Africa. Notably, a strengthened partnership with Kuwait is pivotal. On the occasion of the successful visit of His Highness the Crown Prince of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Khalid Al-Hamad Al-Sabah to Japan, in May 2025, Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) on International Cooperation between Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED) was signed to strengthen cooperation in the field of development. The areas of cooperation will include exchanging information and best practices, conducting consultations, and jointly identifying potential projects, and so on. The MoC also provides a foundation for various activities and collaborations, such as jointly aiding third countries in the region, including Africa, and delivering capacity-building workshops in Japan. The Significance of the Japan-Kuwait Partnership: The collaboration between Japan and Kuwait is especially important in the context of TICAD9. Japan warmly welcomes the presence of KFAED in the forum, as it represents the first meeting focused on development since the signing of the MoC between our nations, which is essential for sharing visions and finding the next step for further practical collaboration. Furthermore, the participation of KFAED, which has extensive knowledge and experience in the development sector in Africa and other regions, will further enhance the influence and importance of TICAD9 in bringing resilient and sustainable growth to Africa. Japan's Strategic Approach and Cooperation: Besides such initiatives, Japan has been developing a strategic approach and framework to engage multi-stakeholders to deliver practical cooperation in the region. The approach includes collaboration with Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs), development financial institutions, and the private sector. Furthermore, Japan newly introduced the 'Co-creation for common agenda initiative' in 2023. Under this initiative, Japan will proactively propose appealing cooperation menus to achieve development goals by the 'co-creation' of social value through dialogue and collaboration with the partner countries, while mobilizing other official flows (OOF) and private finance in combination with ODA. Sustainable development cannot be achieved solely by a single nation. Japan will continue to further deepen the partnership with Kuwait and relevant stakeholders and undertake efforts for a sustainable future in Africa and the world. With the renewed partnership between JICA and KFAED, we envision that this cooperation will contribute meaningfully to addressing economic, social, and environmental challenges and realizing sustainable development in the African continent to strengthen the partnership between the two countries.

Kamala Harris to chronicle her historic presidential run in '107 Days'

The book is called "107 Days,' the length of her abbreviated campaign, and will be published by Simon & Schuster on Sept. 23. "Just over a year ago, I launched my campaign for President of the United States,' Harris said in a video announcement on Thursday. "107 days traveling the country, fighting for our future - the shortest presidential campaign in modern history. Since leaving office, I've spent a lot of time reflecting on those days and with candor and reflection, I've written a behind-the-scenes account of that journey. I believe there's value in sharing what I saw, what I learned, and what it will take to move forward.' Simon & Schuster CEO Jonathan Karp declined to offer any specifics on what Harris will write about, including her thoughts on questions about President Joe Biden's fitness for office but said Harris "addresses everything we would want her to address.' Harris ended up heading the Democratic ticket after Biden dropped out last July in the wake of a disastrous debate performance, and she was defeated last November by Republican Donald Trump. She would have been the first woman and first woman of color to become president. She announced on Wednesday that she will not run for California governor in 2026. Ukrainian Parliament approves law ensuring independence of anti-graft watchdogs
KYIV, Ukraine, July 31, (AP): Ukraine's Parliament on Thursday overwhelmingly approved a bill presented by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy that restores the independence of two of the country's key anti-corruption watchdogs, reversing his contentious move last week that curbed their power and brought an outcry. Last week's measure by Zelenskyy to place the watchdogs under the oversight of the prosecutor-general prompted rebukes from Ukrainians, the European Union and international rights groups. It raised fears that the government could meddle in investigations and potentially shield its supporters from scrutiny. Fighting entrenched corruption is crucial for Ukraine's aspirations to join the EU and maintain access to billions of dollars of vital Western aid in the nearly 3½-year all-out war. It's also an effort that enjoys broad public support. Zelenskyy said he signed the bill into law less than two hours after its approval - an unusually speedy procedure for legislation.
