Women's EURO 2025: Finland beats 10-woman Iceland 1-0 in opener

Katariina Kosola's goal gave Finland a 1-0 win over 10-woman Iceland in the opening match of the Women's European Championship on Wednesday, giving the Finns the perfect start in Group A, which also contains hosts Switzerland and Norway.
Finland lost all three games at the last tournament, scoring one goal, but after Iceland's Hildur Antonsdottir's red card in the 58th minute, Kosola made the breakthrough 12 minutes later.
The first half ended goalless, with Iceland threatening from set-pieces and Sveindis Jonsdottir's long throw-ins while Finland created the better chances but were unable to find a way past goalkeeper Cecilia Runarsdottir.
Inter Milan's Runarsdottir, voted best Serie A keeper last season, made an excellent diving save to keep out Kosola's shot from the edge of the area. Iceland lost captain Glodis Viggosdottir to injury, with the defender replaced at halftime.
Another throw-in from Jonsdottir brought Iceland its first real opportunity after the break, with Finnish keeper Anna Koivunen saving one effort and Emma Koivisto blocking another shot but it also led to the red card for Antonsdottir.
Antonsdottir had been booked six minutes earlier, and a rash off-the-ball challenge brought a second yellow card and left Iceland down to 10 with over half an hour remaining.

The drums of the Icelandic fans echoed around the Arena Thun, but it was Finland that now controlled the tempo on the pitch and deservedly found a way through.
Kosola took the ball into the box and cut inside before smacking a beautiful shot, which Runarsdottir got a hand to but could not stop the ball sailing into the top corner.
Iceland pushed to the end for an equaliser but Finland held on to take the three points.
Finland faces Norway next in Sion on Sunday, with Iceland, which has one win in 14 Euros matches, facing the Swiss in Bern.

Luka Modric signs contract with AC Milan after 13 seasons at Real Madrid; check full details of deal

Luka Modric, the 2018 Ballon d'Or winner signed a blockbuster deal with AC Milan. The club confirmed with an official statement on Monday (July 14). This contract marks the end of Modric's illustrious 13-year tenure at Real Madrid, where he became the club's most celebrated player. "AC Milanis delighted to announce thatLuka Modrichas signed a contract with the Club until30 June 2026with an option for a one-year extension until 30 June 2027," the club released an official statement. At 39, the Croatian midfielder is set to bring his experience to a Milan side eager to reclaim its former glory after a disappointing eighth-place finish in Serie A last season. "Luka Modric will wear thenumber 14 shirtfor the Rossoneri," the release further stated. Interestingly, Modric, who captains Croatia with a record 188 caps and 28 goals, has long admired AC Milan, inspired by his childhood idol, Zvonimir Boban, a Croatian legend who starred for the Rossoneri in the 1990s. Modric aims to help restore the seven-time European champions to their former heights. Born in Zadar, Croatia, on September 9, 1985, Modric's journey to football stardom began early. At 16, he joined Dinamo Zagreb's youth system, honing his skills through loan spells at Zrinjski Mostar and NK Inter Zapresic. Returning to Dinamo in 2004, he played 128 matches, scored 32 goals, and helped secure three league titles, two Croatian Cups, and a Croatian Super Cup. In 2008, Modric moved to Tottenham Hotspur, where he netted 17 goals in 159 appearances. His 2012 transfer to Real Madrid cemented his legacy, with 43 goals in 597 games and 28 titles, including six Champions Leagues, five Club World Cups, and four LaLiga titles. His 2018 Ballon d'Or win solidified his status as one of football's all-time greats. The transfer was finalized after negotiations led by AC Milan's new sporting director, Igli Tare, who met Modric at Croatia's training camp last month. New head coach Massimiliano Allegri, who returned to Milan after guiding the club to the 2011 Serie A title, reportedly consulted former Madrid and Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti about Modric's fitness and form. The deal was agreed upon before the FIFA Club World Cup, though Modric could only join Milan after his final match for Real Madrid (a 4-0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain) in the tournament's semifinals. Modric arrived in Milan on Monday for his medical tests and the singing was completed later in the day.

Victor Osimhen Nearing A Permanent Move To Galatasaray? Noted Absent From Napoli Training

Last Updated: Osimhen missed Napoli's pre-season training amid advanced talks for a move to Galatasaray. Despite his success in Turkey, new coach Antonio Conte doesn't see him in Napoli's plans. Victor Osimhen was notably absent as Napoli resumed pre-season training on Monday, with the Nigerian striker reportedly in advanced negotiations for a permanent move to Turkish champions Galatasaray. In an official statement, Napoli confirmed the squad's return to training: 'The players met at the training centre for medical examinations and physical tests. Victor Osimhen was absent and provided a medical certificate." Galatasaray Move on the Horizon Osimhen, a crucial figure in Napoli's 2023 Serie A title win, spent the previous season on loan at Galatasaray, where he excelled with 26 goals in 30 league appearances, helping the Istanbul giants clinch their 25th Super Lig title. Despite his prolific form in Turkey, it appears new Napoli head coach Antonio Conte does not see the 26-year-old forward in his plans for the upcoming Scudetto defence. However, Napoli have made it clear they won't let Osimhen leave for anything less than €75 million ($87.5 million). Negotiations between the two clubs have been ongoing for several weeks, but the deal remains stalled, with disagreements over payment structures continuing to delay an agreement. New Faces, Familiar Absences Meanwhile, Napoli's new signing, Kevin De Bruyne, recently acquired from Manchester City, was also absent from Monday's session. The 34-year-old Belgian midfielder was not among the players reporting for initial medicals and testing. As Napoli prepare for a new season under Conte, the futures of key players like Osimhen—and how swiftly the club can integrate new signings—will be pivotal to their hopes of reclaiming the Serie A title. Luka Modrid joins AC Milan on one-year deal

Croatia captain Luka Modric, who left Real Madrid after 13 years at the La Liga club, has completed his move to AC Milan on a one-year deal with an option to extend until June 2027, the Serie A side said on Monday. The 39-year-old midfielder's arrival was confirmed by newly-appointed Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri earlier this month. Modric will wear the number 14 shirt, Milan said in a statement. Modric, regarded as one of the greatest midfielders of all time, announced in May that he would leave Real after the Club World Cup. He has made 597 appearances for the Spanish club, winning 28 trophies including four La Liga and six Champions League titles. He played his last game for Real on Wednesday, coming on as a second-half substitute during a 4-0 loss to Paris St Germain in the Club World Cup semifinals. 'It's a bitter end... he's a legend of world football and of Real Madrid. He'll be remembered for many more good things than for the 25 minutes he played today,' Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso said after the match. Modric, considered Croatia's greatest player of all time, has represented the country 188 times, scoring 28 goals. He won the Golden Ball at World Cup 2018, where he led Croatia to the final for the first time. He also won the Ballon d'Or the same year, becoming the first player other than Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo to win the prestigious annual award since 2007. Modric's arrival reinforces a Milan midfield that also features Youssouf Fofana, Yunus Musah and Ruben Loftus-Cheek, with Samuele Ricci joining from Torino earlier this month. Milan, which failed to qualify for a European competition after finishing eighth in the Italian top-flight league last season, begins its Serie A campaign against newly-promoted Cremonese on August 23.
