Tony Hawk's latest trick? Being a cool grandpa.
"I'm Papa. My wife is Momo," Hawk tells Yahoo Life. "And so it's like, 'Papa, time for a change!' Papa changes diapers."
As a father of four and stepfather of two, Hawk, 57, has spent years rearing children on top of his career as the world's most famous skater. But with the arrival of Ronin — the baby boy who his oldest son, Riley Hawk, and Riley's wife, Frances Bean Cobain, daughter of Courtney Love and the late Kurt Cobain, welcomed last September — he's discovering the distinct difference between parenting one's own children and being an active (not to mention indulgent) grandparent.
"I totally understand people who gush over being grandparents. I used to be like, 'It's so mushy. Come on, grandparents.' Then, when your child has a child, it just sets you up for fun times," Hawk explains. "I mean, there's a look that Ronin gets when he walks through our house threshold, like through the door, where you can see it. It's like, This is my domain now. No one's telling me no, and I have two grandparents at my full control. And we embrace it. We love it."
Hawk and his wife, Catherine Goodman, occasionally get the phone call to babysit at the last minute. It's an opportunity they jump at.
"'Can you guys watch them for a couple of hours today or tonight?' Yep. Even though we had plans, it doesn't matter," he laughs.
It's all part of a new chapter of life for the former Southern California skateboarding phenom turned sports icon, video game muse and entrepreneur. In a recent Instagram post marking his stepson Calvin's college graduation, Hawk reflected on seeing his kids pursue higher education in contrast to his own more unconventional career path. "I was skating, touring and gleaming cubes right after high school," he shared in the post. "I grabbed my diploma and walked off campus forever, never looking back."
It "just gives you so much pride that they are finding their own way," he tells Yahoo Life of seeing his brood grow up on their own terms. "We're trying to give them as much support as we can, resources, even opening doors or making introductions. But they have to walk through it, and they have to do the work. Nothing is just given to them because of my own success. I think we're just proud that they choose to try new things."
While Hawk wants to support his kids as much as he can, he does his best to avoid being overbearing or restrictive. "I definitely am not a helicopter parent," he says. He points out that as "a kid in the '70s and '80s, we were kind of feral and didn't have a lot of guidance."
And even as a pro athlete himself, he was never that dad screaming at his kids' sports games "to the point where it's about you." Adds Hawk: "It's as simple as that. Don't be the one being too loud or disputing the umpires. That's not a good look. And it makes your kid want to shrivel up and disappear."
All of his kids skate; Riley has even gone pro. Guiding them through an occasionally dangerous sport while being relatively hands-off is a unique challenge. "I like to have a good gauge of their abilities and then let them push it to an extent where they feel like they're outside of their comfort zone, but not in peril," says Hawk, whose new video game, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 + 4, comes out July 11.
Hawk knows a lot about putting himself in peril. Three years ago, he attempted a trick (a bit carelessly, he admits) that was dangerous and complicated. "I didn't really have enough speed and I just f***ed around and found out," he says. He ended up breaking his femur. The road to recovery was long and painful.
"I have had my share of injuries — broken bones, concussions and things like that. But when you break your femur, that's the biggest bone in your body," he notes. "There's a feeling that you get where you realize your limb is completely disconnected, and there's nothing you can do about it. You can't stand up and walk it off."
Since the accident, Hawk has committed to a regular exercise regimen. In addition to getting back on his board, he now works out three times a week and emphasizes strength training. He believes staying in motion is the key to feeling healthy as he ages — which is especially important with a young grandson to keep up with.
"I think atrophy is the surefire way to suddenly age beyond your years," he says.
It's also the relationships with his children that keep Hawk feeling young. His trick for nurturing those connections is simple: Stick around.
"Be involved, be there, be present. That's it," he says. "You never know when the next milestone is gonna come along."

Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham move toward reconciliation: ‘It's never over'
It seems Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham may be ready to move past their longstanding feud — and fans are taking notice. The former Fleetwood Mac musicians, who famously dated and broke up as the band recorded its 1977 album 'Rumours,' recently began following each other on Instagram. Though it may seem like a small gesture, those who have watched the tension between the former couple grow over the decades believe it's a monumental step. 'stevie nicks and lindsey buckingham following each other in the year of 2025, after their fallout is proof that it's NEVER OVER and you can have a 60-year-old situationship with your ex!' X user @ kajolswife wrote. The post has been viewed 1 million times and has received 38,000 likes since it was shared on Friday, July 11. Though it is unclear when exactly Nicks and Buckingham began following each other, the post notes that they weren't connected on social media as of three weeks ago. Several other fans online began expressing similar excitement about the detail on June 27. X user @RumoursEra shared a GIF of a man walking toward a group of athletes in a locker room with a smile on his face as they all begin to jump together in excitement. 'ME OPENING THIS APP TO FIND OUT FROM OOMFS THAT STEVIE AND LINDSEY FOLLOW EACH OTHER ON INSTAGRAM,' they captioned the post, shared on June 27. Later that day, Instagram user @stevienicksnation shared a screenshot of the post with the caption: 'What could this mean?' Nicks, who served as the band's lead singer, and Buckingham, who played guitar and keyboard, met while attending Menlo-Atherton High School and began dating in 1972. The two have had a bitter relationship since their split. As recent as last October, Nicks told Rolling Stone that she 'dealt with Lindsey for as long as I could' and gave him 'more than 300 million chances.' Efforts to reunite Nicks and Buckingham have been ongoing for years. In February, their bandmate Mick Fleetwood even shared his hopes for them to 'pal up a bit more' during an interview with US Weekly Magazine. But while this recent virtual interaction is promising for many reunion hopefuls like Fleetwood, Nicks made clear that after the 2022 death of the band's keyboardist, Christine McVie, it would never happen. 'Without Christine, no can do,' Nicks told Mojo Magazine in June 2024. 'There is no chance of putting Fleetwood Mac back together in any way. Without her, it just couldn't work.'

Justin Bieber Says ‘I Know I'm Broken,' Slams ‘Concern' Over His Behavior After Father's Day Post
Justin Bieber got candid about healing in his latest in a string of Instagram posts. 'People keep telling me to heal,' Justin, 31, wrote in a cryptic message shared via the social media platform on Monday, June 16. 'Don't you think if I could have fixed myself, I would have already? I know I'm broken. I know I have anger issues.' The 'Baby' singer continued, 'I tried to do the work my whole life to be like the people who told me I needed to be fixed like them. And it just keeps making me more tired and more angry.' Justin added that the harder he tries 'to grow,' the 'more focused on myself I am.' Justin Bieber Opens Up About His 'Anger Issues,' Declares 'I Wanna Grow' in Candid Post 'Jesus is the only person who keeps me wanting to make my life about others,' he concluded. 'Because honestly, I'm exhausted with talking about myself lately, aren't you?' Justin also shared the post via his Instagram Stories. Hours prior to sharing the message, Justin took to his Stories to tell fans, 'Quit asking me if I'm OK. Quit asking me how I'm doing. I don't do that to you. Because I know how life is for all of us. It's hard.' He continued, 'Let's encourage our people not [to] project our insecurities onto one another. Your concern doesn't come off as care, it's just oppressive, weirdo.' Along with the message, Justin reposted a set of screenshots depicting a text exchange with an unnamed person. In one text, the musician seemingly told the other person that he would 'never suppress my emotions for someone,' and if the person didn't like 'my anger, you don't like me.' 'Asking a traumatized person not to be traumatized is simply mean,' he added, later telling the person, 'I enjoyed our short-lived relationship.' The alleged former friend responded to Justin, 'I'm not used to someone lashing out at me. It's not that I don't see and feel your anger.' Justin fired back, 'This friendship is officially over. I will never accept a man calling my anger lashing out. … I wasn't kidding when I told u [sic] I didn't need u [sic] as a friend. I have good friends … who will respect these boundaries.' Us Weekly reached out to a rep for Justin for comment regarding the texts. The post, as well as several others that Justin shared on Sunday, June 15, prompted a wave of concern from fans. 'Someone please intervene and get this dude some help before it's too late,' one fan commented, while another user added, 'You cannot have justifiable angry outbursts due to trauma, it doesn't work that way.' Justin Bieber Says He's 'Been Drowning Feeling Unsafe' in Emotional Instagram Post Among the other posts that Justin shared were photos of the gifts he received for Father's Day, photos of his son, Jack Blues, whom he shares with wife Hailey Bieber, and selfies, many of which were captioned with a middle finger emoji. On one of his posts, Justin wrote, 'I'm a dad that's not to be f***ed with.' Earlier this month, Justin responded to a May 21 meme featuring a screenshot of text messages from someone's grandfather. The messages read, 'I am worried about Justin Bieber. There is so much heartbreak in Justin's life.' Justin commented, 'Worry about yourself gramps.'

Scooter Braun Calls Justin Bieber's New Album ‘Beautiful' — And Hailey Bieber Seemingly Reacts
Scooter Braun had plenty to say about former client Justin Bieber's latest album, Swag. 'Been having a beautiful start to the weekend and getting a lot of texts about how I feel about Justin's new album,' Braun, 44, wrote in a lengthy Instagram Story statement shared on Saturday, July 12. 'This is, without a doubt, the most authentically Justin Bieber album to date." He added, 'It's beautiful, raw and truly him. And that matters.' Bieber, 31, dropped Swag — his first album since 2021's Justice — on Friday, July 11. The collection of 21 songs includes 'Daisies,' which Braun used in his social media upload. There's 'No Bad Blood' Between Justin Bieber and Scooter Braun: It Was 'Time to Move On' 'This is more of a personal project that Justin has been wanting to put out, almost like a mixtape,' a source exclusively told Us Weekly of the record. 'His label is planning a more traditional pop album for early next year.' Braun, meanwhile, is credited with first discovering Bieber via YouTube before going on to sign him as a client. The duo officially parted ways in 2023. 'I've had the privilege of witnessing [Justin's] growth for almost two decades. Along every journey, there comes a time when an artist fully steps into their own — and that's what he's done here,' Braun added on Saturday. 'He poured his soul into this project, and you can feel it in every single run.' Braun also praised Bieber's surprise release strategy. 'The way he chose to release it is just as intentional as the music itself,' he wrote. I'm happy to see him do it his way. I have played no roll [sic] in the one, but as someone who's always believed in him, I'm incredibly proud and impressed and genuinely enjoying this music.' Justin Bieber Releases Surprise 7th Album 'Swag' Braun continued, 'Justin has a special tone that I have witnessed for almost two decades. It's the best in the world, and because of that special tone, I have to say 'Daisies' is probably my favorite [song] on the album.' Braun concluded his message by asking his followers to stream Swag and 'support an authentic voice.' While Justin has not publicly responded to Braun's message of support, his wife, Hailey Bieber, seemingly had something to say. Around the same time that Braun posted his statement, Hailey, 28, uploaded a side-eye selfie captioned with Mariah Carey's 'Obsessed.' While it's not overtly known if Hailey's mention was a pointed dig at Braun, Us previously confirmed that she helped Justin go in a different direction with his managerial team. A second source told Us in August 2023 that Hailey "led the charge that led Justin to leave [Scooter] for another manager.'
