New Nee Soon MP to call for more penalties for animal welfare offences in wake of community cat deaths

SINGAPORE: After a spate of recent cat deaths, Lee Hui Ying, one of the newly elected Members of Parliament (MP) for Nee Soon Group Representation Constituency (GRC), said earlier this week that she will raise the issue of enhancing penalties against animal welfare offences.
Since May, at least three community cats have been found dead in Nee Soon and Punggol. After a second cat was found lifeless in Nee Soon within a short amount of time, CNA reported that a bounty of S$5,000 had been put up in the hopes of finding the person responsible for the deaths.
Ms Lee noted in a Facebook post late on Tuesday night that the National Parks Board (NParks) finished investigations into the death of King Kong, the Nee Soon community cat found dead early last month, saying that it had likely been due to a vehicular accident. The death of the second cat from the area is still under investigation. See also Strange goings-on at SPH
'There is an important need to care for our community, including animals, in our estate. Most importantly, creating a safer environment for all,' the MP wrote, adding that she intends to speak on more penalties for animal welfare offences when Parliament reopens.
Ms Lee wrote that Singapore needs stronger laws and enforcement, stricter penalties for cruelty, and better protection for voiceless lives.
'Our animals don't have a voice — but we do,' she added.
CNA reported on Jun 4 that NParks has looked into the deaths of four cats, two in Yishun, one in Punggol, and one in Tampines.
NParks' group director of enforcement and investigation Jessica Kwok said that a road accident was also the likely cause of the death of the Punggol community cat.
'NParks understands the concerns on cases of alleged animal cruelty, and we would like to assure the public that we take all feedback received from the public on alleged animal cruelty seriously and will investigate them thoroughly, including looking at any new evidence presented,' she added.
Meanwhile, a petition calling for stronger enforcement of animal cruelty laws in Singapore has been shared on the Change.org platform.
'Community cats in Singapore are increasingly becoming victims of abuse, with more reports of physical harm, poisoning, and neglect surfacing in recent months. These animals, who often rely on the care of volunteers and kind-hearted residents, suffer silently with limited protection. Beyond the cats themselves, caregivers and animal welfare groups are also affected emotionally and financially as they scramble to treat injuries, report abuse, and seek justice within a system that often falls short,' it reads. /TISG

Vietnam Airlines suspends pilots after planes collide at Hanoi airport

The airline has also set up an independent team to examine the cause of the collision. PHOTO: ST FILE HANOI - Vietnam Airlines has suspended four pilots after two of its planes collided at Hanoi's Noi Bai Airport on June 27. The incident occurred at around 2pm that day (3pm Singapore time) when a Boeing 787 was taxiing for takeoff to Ho Chi Minh City. As it moved through the intersection of taxiways S3 and S, its right wing tip struck the vertical stabiliser of an Airbus A321 that was waiting to depart for Dien Bien. The Boeing's wing tip was damaged, while the Airbus sustained a tear in its tail fin. Both aircraft were immediately grounded for technical inspections, and replacement planes were arranged to transport over 380 affected passengers to their destinations. Vietnam Airlines said it suspended the four pilots, two from each flight crew, from June 27 afternoon pending the results of an internal investigation. The airline has also set up an independent team to examine the cause of the collision alongside the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV). The CAAV has classified the collision as a level B serious incident, the second highest on the five-tier aviation safety scale, indicating a severe safety breach that forced temporary runway or taxiway closures. Preliminary findings suggest that the Airbus A321 was not parked at its designated holding point on taxiway S3 at the time of the collision. Vietnam Airlines said it is fully cooperating with aviation authorities to determine accountability and prevent similar incidents in the future. Thousands, including PAP MPs, WP MPs and Li Huanwu, gather to celebrate Pink Dot 2025

SINGAPORE: Thousands of supporters gathered at Hong Lim Park on Saturday (28 June) for the 17th edition of Pink Dot SG, Singapore's annual rally in support of the LGBTQ+ community. This year's theme, 'Different Stories, Same Love,' set the tone for a warm atmosphere as participants waved pink flags, posed for photos, and shared personal stories celebrating love in all its forms. The event, a fixture in Singapore's civic calendar, saw a presence from both sides of the political aisle. From the People's Action Party (PAP), Potong Pasir SMC MP Alex Yeo and Sembawang GRC MP Ng Shi Xuan were seen mingling with attendees. The Workers' Party (WP) was represented by Sengkang GRC MPs Louis Chua and He Ting Ru, both of whom declined to speak to the media. Among the crowd were familiar faces including Li Huanwu and his husband Heng Yirui. Mr Li, the son of Lee Hsien Yang and grandson of Singapore's founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, has been an outspoken supporter of LGBTQ+ rights in recent years. Speaking to the media, Pink Dot spokesman Clement Tan said this year's rally aimed to look beyond the present and inspire future generations. A highlight of the afternoon was the unveiling of a time capsule on site, containing nearly 70 items donated by community members — from jewellery and clothing to letters and mementos. 'This time capsule serves as a reminder of the love and resilience that has carried us this far,' Mr Tan said, 'We want to send a message of hope to future Singaporeans: that all forms of love are valid and that our relationships should be celebrated equally.' The capsule will remain sealed until 2050, when organisers hope it will be opened as a testament to how far Singapore has come in embracing diversity.

Young motorcyclist sent to hospital unconscious after bike skids at Tuas Checkpoint

SINGAPORE: A 23-year-old motorcyclist was left unconscious after a serious accident that took place in front of Tuas Checkpoint on Saturday afternoon (28 June). The Singapore Police Force confirmed that they were alerted to the incident at approximately 3:25pm. Preliminary investigations suggest that the motorcycle had skidded while travelling along the road approaching the checkpoint. A photograph circulating on social media, shared by a Facebook user who captured a screenshot from the mobile app, shows the motorcycle lying on its side across a lane. Debris from the vehicle was strewn across the road. In the same image, a man believed to be the rider can be seen lying motionless near the road shoulder. Several police officers and checkpoint staff were present at the scene, attending to the injured man and directing traffic around the site. The rider was conveyed to the hospital unconscious. Investigations are ongoing.
