Nestle Waters fined in Switzerland for using carbon filters
AFP | Zurich Nestle Waters has been fined more than $610,000 for having used activated carbon filters on its Henniez bottled mineral water, Swiss public prosecutors announced Wednesday. The attorney general of western Switzerland's Vaud canton -- where Nestle has its headquarters, and where Henniez water is sourced -- accused the global food giant's bottled water division of 'misleading consumers' by having 'natural mineral water' on the label between 2008 and 2022. 'In doing so, the attorney general believes that the company obtained economic advantages by not complying with its legal labelling obligations,' a statement said, announcing the fine of 500,000 Swiss francs. In France, Nestle's bottled waters -- which include the iconic Perrier brand -- have been at the centre of a scandal since early 2024 regarding the use of micro-filtration processes. Banned for mineral waters, these processes were used by several producers, including Nestle, as revealed by the French newspaper Le Monde and Radio France. Shortly afterwards, Swiss newspaper Le Temps revealed that the Nestle Waters had also used carbon filters in the Henniez brand's factory in Switzerland. The attorney general's office said that the use of an activated carbon filtration process was discovered in the Henniez plant during an inspection in 2020. Some treatments are allowed, and the Vaud consumer office recommended that Nestle Waters apply for an exemption. However, this was refused, and the company was given until the end of 2022 to remove its carbon filter installation. A March 2023 inspection confirmed that the filter had indeed been decommissioned. But the consumer office sent a complaint to the cantonal public prosecutors, accusing Nestle Waters of having concealed the use of a carbon filter. The attorney general imposed a fine of 500,000 Swiss francs on Nestle, whose water brands last year generated sales of 3.2 billion Swiss francs ($4 billion). 'This amount takes into account the specific circumstances of the case, as the water produced presented no danger to consumers, either before or after filtration,' the statement said. 'It also takes into account the full and complete cooperation of Nestle Waters' management during the proceedings.' A Nestle Waters spokesperson told AFP the filters did not comply with Swiss regulations on mineral waters and have since been removed under the supervision of the authorities. 'We accept the ruling and express our regret for this past situation,' the spokesperson said.

UAE's Dollar-Millionaires: Another 13,000 Join Resident Base In 2024, Says UBS
An additional 13,000 made it to the ranks of UAE's dollar millionaire resident base in 2024, according to the latest UBS 'Global wealth Report 2025', which is an increase of 5.8% from the year before. A good number of these newly created millionaire base in the UAE came about from re-locations, as has been the case for four years now. 'This year there has been some significant movement in the number of millionaires in many of parts of the world, both upwards and downwards,' according to the Swiss bank's findings. 'In 2024, Turkey stands out from the crowd thanks to an 8.4% increase in its number of dollar millionaires over 2023, equivalent to a boost of roughly 7,000 people in a single year. The UAE (had) a rise of 5.8% in millionaire numbers, thanks to approximately 13,000 new entrants in this category.' 'Having looked at long-term trends, we concluded that wealth is far from static.' In the UAE, that's been the case. Banking and property market sources talk about the multi-million dollar deals that have been shaping the UAE investment landscape. The property firm Knight Frank in a recent report points to the influx of Saudi, Indian, Chinese and UK high networth individuals committing sizable investments in the UAE. At some locations such as Jumeira Bay island, the deal sizes are getting bigger. There are an estimated 240,343 dollar-millionaires in the UAE with a combined $785 million. Saudi Arabia, according to UBS, has 339,029 dollar-millionaires, with a combined wealth holdings of $958.3 million. 'In an era marked by rapid economic shifts, increasing volatility and unprecedented market developments, understanding the trends and drivers of wealth creation is more crucial than ever,' said Robert Karofsky, co-President of UBS Global Wealth Management. In the UAE, around 62% of gross wealth is allocated to financial assets, and it's almost 58% in Saudi Arabia. Assets such as real estate as well as land make up about 48% of what the super-rich spend on in both the prime GCC markets. (Debt levels among these investors is close to 9% in the UAE and 'only 5.7% in Saudi Arabia, one of the lowest levels in our sample of 56 countries', according to UBS.) Niels Zilkens, Head Wealth Management Middle East at UBS Global Wealth Management, said: 'Saudi Arabia and the UAE are not only seeing rising millionaire numbers, but also meaningful gains in median wealth – especially in the UAE, where it rose over 23% since 2020. 'With a combined $122 billion in expected wealth transfers ahead, both markets are entering a pivotal phase of generational transition.'

WhatsApp introduces first major advertising features
AFP | San Francisco, United States WhatsApp announced Monday it will introduce its boldest advertising features yet, marking a significant shift for the messaging platform that has largely remained ad-free since its launch. The move is a sensitive one for WhatsApp, whose chief firmly denied a report in 2023 that said the Meta-owned app was exploring advertisements as it sought to boost revenue. Unlike Facebook, Instagram, and other social platforms, WhatsApp has maintained minimal advertising since Meta acquired it in 2014. Users and regulators have kept a close watch on whether the social media giant would seek to monetize an app that was primarily used to chat with friends and family, and was appreciated for its privacy. Until now, the platform's advertising consisted primarily of WhatsApp Business promotional messages to opted-in customers and some limited Status ad testing in select markets. The messaging app has no display ads in chat feeds or conversations. The company said it will roll out three new monetization features exclusively within its Updates tab, which houses both Channels and Status features used by 1.5 billion people daily and became widely available last year. The company stressed that users who only use WhatsApp for personal messaging will see no changes to their experience, as all new features are confined to the Updates tab that can be deactivated in the settings. "We've been talking about our plans to build a business that does not interrupt your personal chats for years and we believe the Updates tab is the right place for these new features to work," WhatsApp said. The new features include paid channel subscriptions, promoted channels in the Discovery directory, and advertisements within Status, WhatsApp's version of Instagram Stories. WhatsApp emphasized that the new advertising features are designed with privacy safeguards. "I want to be really clear about one thing: Your personal messages, calls and statuses will remain end-to-end encrypted. This means no one, not even us, can see or hear them, and they cannot be used for ads," Nikila Srinivasan, vice president of product management at Meta, told reporters. The company committed to never selling or sharing phone numbers to advertisers and said personal messages, calls, and group memberships will not influence ad targeting. "To show ads in Status or Channels, we're going to use basic information like your country or city, your device language and your activity in the Updates tab," Srinivasan said. The introduction of advertising represents Meta's effort to monetize WhatsApp's massive user base of over two billion monthly active users. Industry analysts have long speculated that Meta would eventually bring advertising to WhatsApp given its scale and engagement rates. The timeline for these features was not specified in the announcement. "They're going to be rolling out slowly over the next few months, so it might be a while until you see them in your countries," Srinivasan said.
