Reckitt to sell Essential Home business to Advent in $4.8 billion deal

Yahoo5 days ago
(Reuters) - Consumer goods firm Reckitt said on Friday that it has agreed to sell its Essential Home business, maker of Air Wick fresheners, to private equity firm Advent International in a deal valued at $4.8 billion including debt.
Reckitt said it would retain a 30% stake in the unit.
Reuters exclusively reported last month that the two parties were in talks over a sale, with Reckitt likely to retain a minority stake in the unit, which also makes Cillit Bang cleaners.
Reckitt said it plans to return excess capital to shareholders, including a special dividend of about $2.2 billion and a share consolidation after the deal closes.
Essential Home business, which accounted for about 13% of Reckitt's group revenue in the first quarter, has struggled for several quarters, with sales falling 7% in the first three months of the year.

Trending tickers: Krispy Kreme, Texas Instruments, Toyota, Tencent and SAP

Krispy Kreme (DNUT) Doughnut chain Krispy Kreme (DNUT) appeared to be the latest addition to a new batch of meme stocks in the latest resurgence of the trend this week. Shares jumped nearly 27% on Tuesday and were up close to another 27% in pre-market trading on Wednesday morning, with it mentioned in threads on the subreddit wallstreetbets, which became popular in the meme stock craze of 2021. Department store Kohl's (KSS) was another entrant into this new class of meme stocks, also appearing in the subreddit threads on Tuesday. Shares in the beleaguered US retailer rocketed nearly 38% on Tuesday but hovered just below the flatline in pre-market trading on Wednesday morning. Read more: Stocks surge as Trump strikes trade deals with Japan, the Philippines and Indonesia This latest iteration of the meme stock craze began with online real estate service Opendoor Technologies (OPEN), with retail investors piling into the stock over the past week. Opendoor rocketed 188% last week after activist investor Eric Jackson said he could see the company hitting $82 (£60.56) per share, posting his bull thesis for an Opendoor turnaround on X on 14 July. However, shares turned negative on Tuesday, closing the session more than 10% in the red. Texas Instruments (TXN) Shares in Texas Instruments (TXN) were down 11.5% in pre-market trading on Wednesday, after the chipmaker's third quarter guidance appeared to disappoint against expectations. The company posted a 16% rise in second quarter revenue to $4.45bn, in results released on Tuesday, and earnings per share (EPS) of $1.41 was also 16% higher than the same period last year. For the third quarter, Texas Instruments said it expected revenue to be in the range of $4.45bn to $4.8bn and EPS of $1.36 and $1.60. According to Bloomberg, the average analyst estimate for revenue for $4.57bn, though some forecasts reached $4.8bn. Stocks: Create your watchlist and portfolio In prepared remarks for the company's earnings call, CEO Haviv Ilan said: "We continue to see two distinct dynamics at play. First, tariffs and geopolitics are disrupting and reshaping global supply chains. As we work closely with our customers, we are leveraging our global manufacturing capabilities to support their needs. We have flexibility and are prepared to navigate as things evolve." "Second, the semiconductor cycle is playing out," he added. "Cyclical recovery is continuing, while customer inventories remain at low levels. In times like this, it is important to have capacity and inventory, and we are well positioned." Toyota Motor Corp (7203.T) Shares in Tokyo-listed Toyota (7203.T) surged more than 14% on Wednesday, after it was announced that Japan had reached a trade deal with the US. The deal sees a 15% tariff imposed on Japan's exports to the US, which is lower than the 25% levy that US president Donald Trump had threatened in a letter earlier this month. It was later confirmed that this 15% tariff rate also applied to Japan's cars, which is below the 25% universal rate applied by the US on foreign-made cars. Read more: Stocks that are trending today Announcing the deal on Truth Social, Trump said: "We just completed a massive Deal with Japan, perhaps the largest Deal ever made. Japan will invest, at my direction, $550 Billion Dollars into the United States, which will receive 90% of the Profits." "This Deal will create Hundreds of Thousands of Jobs — There has never been anything like it. Perhaps most importantly, Japan will open their Country to Trade including Cars and Trucks, Rice and certain other Agricultural Products, and other things," he said. Tencent ( Hong Kong-listed stocks also rose on Wednesday amid an easing of trade tensions between the US and China. The Hang Seng index (^HSI) rose 1.6% on Wednesday, with key risers including tech firms Tencent ( and Baidu ( which gained 4% and 6% respectively. US Treasury secretary Scott Bessent announced on Tuesday that that a third round of trade talks with China is now scheduled and will commence next week in Sweden. The goal is to delay an August deadline that has threatened to increase tariffs between the world's two largest economies. The confirmation of a meeting — following talks in Geneva and then London earlier this year — comes ahead of an Aug. 12 deadline when a pause on tariffs between China and the US is scheduled to expire. SAP ( In Europe, shares in SAP ( fell more than 3% on Wednesday, after the German software company reported mixed second quarter results. In results released late on Tuesday, SAP posted total revenue of €9.03bn (£7.82bn) for the second quarter, which was up 9% and operating profit of €2.57bn was up 32% year-on-year. Read more: Which Mag 7 stocks will be the top performers this earnings season? Ben Barringer, head of technology research at Quilter Cheviot, said: "All in all, SAP's results are a bit plain vanilla as the company continues to underscore its credentials as an established AI leader. Revenues beat expectations with the transition to cloud services continuing to drive things forward." "The only slight disappointment with these results is that there was no raise to the guidance, especially given the beating of expectations this quarter," he said. "The company has a history of conservatism, but given it is looking to appeal more and more to a US investor base, this approach may need to loosen over time. Barringer added: "Clearly there is still some tariff uncertainty overhanging, but SAP has shown it has the products and the engagement from customers to come through this and remain one of the leaders in AI integration for customers." Meme-Stock Doubters Eye Hedge-Fund Strategy to Bet on Reversal

(Bloomberg) -- Barclays Plc says that it's about time to pump the brakes on a meme stock craze that's driven sharp rallies in companies like Kohl's Corp. and Opendoor Technologies Inc. Trump Awards $1.26 Billion Contract to Build Biggest Immigrant Detention Center in US Why the Federal Reserve's Building Renovation Costs $2.5 Billion Salt Lake City Turns Winter Olympic Bid Into Statewide Bond Boom Milan Corruption Probe Casts Shadow Over Property Boom How San Jose's Mayor Is Working to Build an AI Capital Retail traders have been piling into these unlikely names and sending their shares soaring, showing a kind of fervor that harkens back to the mania around GameStop Corp. shares during the Covid-19 pandemic. But these stocks can fall as suddenly as they rise, which is why Stefano Pascale at Barclays says one potential tactic is a popular hedge-fund strategy known as the dispersion trade. It involves a combination of options in single stocks and contracts on a broad index like the S&P 500 Index. In this case, investors could use options to bet that a basket of meme stocks will continue to be far more volatile than the S&P 500. For traders wanting to take a more directional bet on the frothiest companies, they can buy puts that would benefit if these shares reverse course. 'There are certain corners of the market where it does feel very bubbly,' said Pascale, head of US equity derivatives strategy at Barclays. He and his colleague Anshul Gupta have been warning about untethered market exuberance since the start of July. They point to a rush of companies going public by merging with blank-check companies, as well as the rally in Cathie Wood's ARK Innovation ETF. The fund is bullish on a swath of tech stocks and is up 73% in the last three months. These are 'signs that we typically associate with a frothy market,' they wrote in July 1 note. Social media buzz has spurred an outsized rally in retailer Kohl's, which rose as much as 105% on Tuesday. Shares of Opendoor, a platform for buying and selling real estate, are up more than 440% since the start of the month. Mounting Euphoria Last week, the Barclays Equity Euphoria Indicator, which uses options data to quantify investors' giddiness, jumped to its highest level since late December. 'A lot of people may recognize that there is a bubble and they may recognize that in the end, they will have to unwind in some form or another,' Pascale said. The challenge facing traders is how to pick the losers. In a Monday note, Piper Sandler Cos. identified two stocks up significantly this year that could be dispersion-trade candidates. It's bearish on beverage maker Celsius Holdings Inc., which is up 68% in 2025 and trades at a lofty price-to-earnings ratio of 77.6. Another is NRG Energy Inc., up 71% this year. 'To me, the activity is starting to have much more of a 2021 feel to it,' said Interactive Brokers' chief strategist Steve Sosnick, referring to the peak of the GameStop frenzy. But Sosnick isn't convinced the dispersion trade is the right way to play the meme stock resurgence, because the companies involved aren't big components of gauges like the S&P 500. In the case of Opendoor, it's not a member of the benchmark index. That makes it harder to bet on divergences between individual names and the wider market. 'It might be more appropriate if we were discussing Nvidia, or Microsoft,' he said. 'In this case I think it is purely idiosyncratic.' Another challenge is predicting when stocks might fall. 'Bubbles can persist for a very, very long time, especially if there's liquidity being provided to the market,' said Barclays' Pascale. Proton is launching a privacy-focused AI chatbot

Proton, the company behind the encrypted email service Proton Mail, has launched an AI assistant aimed at preserving user privacy. The new chatbot, called Lumo, can summarize documents, generate code, write emails, and more, while storing data locally on users' devices. Proton says it will protect this information using 'zero-access' encryption, which grants users an encryption key that only they can use to view their content, preventing third parties, including Proton, from accessing the information. This helps ensure that Proton can't share user data with advertisers or governments, or use it for training large language models, Proton says. Though Lumo comes with the ability to search the web, Proton turns this feature off by default to 'give users maximum privacy.' If users enable the feature, Lumo will search the web for answers using 'privacy-friendly' search engines. Additionally, Proton says Lumo can analyze uploaded files, but it doesn't save any of its information. Users can link Proton Drive files to Lumo as well, which are supposed to stay end-to-end encrypted when interacting with the chatbot. Proton positions its AI chatbot as an alternative to the ones offered by larger companies, like OpenAI's ChatGPT, Meta AI, Google's Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot. 'Big Tech is using AI to supercharge the collection of sensitive user data to accelerate the world's transition to surveillance capitalism,' Andy Yen, the CEO and founder of Proton, says in the announcement. 'Our vision for Lumo is AI that puts people ahead of profits.' Lumo is powered by several open-source large language models that run on Proton's servers in Europe, including Mistral's Nemo, Mistral Small 3, Nvidia's OpenHands 32B, and the Allen Institute for AI's OLMO 2 32B model. The AI chatbot will field requests through different models depending on which is better-suited for the query. 'For instance, programming-related questions are handled by OpenHands, which specializes in coding tasks,' Proton spokesperson Betsy Jones tells The Verge. You can access Lumo now by heading to or downloading the Lumo app for iOS and Android. Users who don't have an account with Lumo or Proton can only ask the chatbot a 'limited number' of questions each week, and they won't be able to access their chat histories. Meanwhile, users with a free account can view an encrypted chat history, upload small files, and favorite a limited number of chats. There's also a $12.99-per-month Lumo Plus plan for access to unlimited chats, extended encrypted chat history, unlimited favorites, and the ability to upload large files.
