CITY Furniture's 4th Annual Green Summit Brings Together NASCAR, Local Changemakers, and Clean Energy Champions

TAMARAC, Fla., July 23, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — CITY Furniture hosted its 4th Annual Green Summit at its Tamarac headquarters, uniting community leaders, sustainability advocates, and national brands for a day focused on real-world environmental solutions for South Florida.
The event featured interactive sessions, hands-on learning, and bold conversations around waste reduction, clean energy, and resilience. Attendees took part in building kits to support community resilience with Habitat for Humanity, explored the future of recycling with Waste Management, and experienced sustainable product innovations from partners like Avocado Mattress and Bedgear.
A highlight of the Summit was the keynote address by Guillermo Santa Cruz, President of Homestead-Miami Speedway, who shared NASCAR's vision for a greener future. Guests also took part in guided discussion, led by Silva Garrigo of the University of Miami Herbert Business School, who encouraged participants to reflect on their organization's environmental path and find collaborative ways forward.
In addition, guests received a behind-the-scenes tour of CITY's award-winning fleet and participated in a sustainability showcase spotlighting eco-conscious vendors and partners.
CITY Furniture CEO Andrew Koenig emphasized the company's deep commitment to environmental progress and clean energy innovation.
'As we continue expanding across Florida, our 2040 Green Promise remains at the heart of everything we do,' said Koenig. 'We've made long-term investments in sustainability and couldn't do it alone. Through our participation in FPL's SolarTogether program, more than 70 percent of CITY's total energy use comes from solar. This allows us to scale our environmental impact as we grow.'
In addition to clean energy, CITY has been increasing access to sustainable transportation by installing more EV charging stations at showrooms across the state.
'Clean energy powers our day-to-day business, and we're proud of that,' Koenig added. 'We hope other companies see what's possible and feel empowered to take action. Because clean energy is not a competition, it's a movement. And there's room for everyone.'
As part of the day's celebration, CITY also recognized sustainability leaders making a powerful impact across the region. The company proudly presented Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) with the Sustainable Vendor of the Year Award, Waste Management with the Sustainable Excellence Award for Community Leadership, and honored Monica Cepero as CITY's Municipal Leader in Sustainable Practices.
The annual Green Summit reflects CITY Furniture's belief that sustainability starts with partnership. By bringing together community organizations, national brands, and local businesses, the company continues to inspire collaboration and leadership on the path to a greener future.

Asean has differing net zero objectives

Published on: Friday, July 25, 2025 Published on: Fri, Jul 25, 2025 Text Size: According to Dr Zulfikar Yurnaidi, although Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia and Vietnam have their Net Zero target by 2050, the Philippines has no specific Net Zero and Carbon Neutrality target. KUCHING: Asean Centre for Energy – Head of Energy Modelling and Policy Planning Department, Dr Zulfikar Yurnaidi said the 10 Asean countries have different Net Zero and Carbon Neutrality goals at the International Energy Week (IEW) 2025, held at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) on July 15-17, 2025 dubbed 'Borneo's Biggest International Energy Expo & Summit'. Asean, as one of the region's most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, is actively working to contribute to global commitments which are required to develop and implement Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). As Malaysia is the Asean chair this year, can Prime Minister Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim convince all the ten countries to make uniform their Net Zero and Carbon Neutrality goals. According to Dr Zulfikar Yurnaidi, although Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia and Vietnam have their Net Zero target by 2050, the Philippines has no specific Net Zero and Carbon Neutrality target. Meanwhile, Indonesia has its Net Zero target by 2060 or sooner, Thailand has set its Carbon neutrality by 2050 and Net Zero target by 2065. Lao PDR has set its Net Zero target by 2050 conditionally, and Myanmar has determined its Net Zero target only from forestry and other land use by 2040. The data indicates that 77 per cent of Green House Gas (GHG) emissions in Asean are primarily generated from the energy, industrial processes, and land use, including land-use change and forestry. With the energy sector being the target contributor to CO2 emissions. The energy and climate sectors are inextricably linked and mutually dependent and integrating this energy-climate nexus is vital for enhancing long-term energy security, affordability, accessibility, and sustainability. Asean's pursuit of Net Zero is a crucial effort that will shape the region's future. In the short term, progress is likely to come from energy efficiency improvements, the adoption of renewable technologies, increased use of biofuels, methane abatement, and transitioning from more polluting fossil fuels to natural gas. 'When anything changes the amount of carbon in one reservoir, the effect ripples through the others.' Looking ahead, Asean has significant opportunities in carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS), further expansion of renewable energy, and deeper integration of biofuels. These strategies will be essential to achieving the net-zero goals of Asean countries. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Asean aims for 30 to 40pct intra-bloc trade, says Mohamad Hasan

KUALA LUMPUR: Greater trade between Asean member states could help reduce over-reliance on traditional trading partners and cushion the region against increasing global economic uncertainty, said Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan. Noting that intra-Asean trade currently remains below 25 per cent, Mohamad said the Asean 2045: Our Shared Future framework aims to boost trade within the region. "While Asean already possesses significant political strength, our economies are still heavily dependent on countries outside the bloc. Therefore, we must strengthen the economic ties between member states by increasing intra-Asean trade. "If we can raise that figure to 30 or 40 per cent, it would be a major milestone," he said in response to a supplementary question from Manndzri Nasib (BN–Tenggara) in the Dewan Rakyat. Manndzri had asked about key initiatives to ensure Asean's continued relevance after Malaysia's Asean chairmanship, particularly in enhancing the bloc's unity and centrality amid current geopolitical challenges. Mohamad said that Malaysia, domestically, still relied on its traditional trade partners. "Malaysia must diversify beyond its established trading partners to avoid potential economic disruptions when those partners face difficulties. "When issues emerge in those countries, it poses serious challenges to our economy. We do not want this situation to persist. "That is why we are exploring new markets. Malaysia's recent acceptance as a partner country in BRICS is significant — it's a large grouping representing 40 per cent of the world's population and 25 per cent of global GDP," he said. On Asean's broader outreach, Mohamad said the recent Asean–Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Summit was a key step in strengthening ties with resource-rich Gulf nations. "We also held the Asean–GCC–China meeting. If these three major blocs can be effectively integrated, the outlook for Asean is highly promising. "The Gulf countries have strong purchasing power, Asean has a sizeable workforce, and China offers a vast market. Linking these strengths presents enormous economic potential for Asean," he added.
