At 2,507 MW, Kol power demand peaked on Thurs night
The soaring demand coincided with maximum temperature reaching 35.4°C and relative humidity climbing to 89%, drastically narrowing the gap between day and night temperatures. This intense combination of heat and moisture has sparked concern over wet-bulb temperatures — a measure that accounts for both heat and humidity, and indicates the risk of heat stress on the body. Experts warn that a
wet-bulb temperature
of 35°C and relative humidity beyond 75% is considered critical, beyond which even healthy individuals can survive for only a few hours.

A report by Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) underscores the dangers of Kolkata's rising energy consumption. It warns that without rapid adoption of
energy-efficient cooling technologies
, the increased demand for air-conditioning and cooling will escalate greenhouse gas emissions, compounding the already critical urban heat problem.

Kolkata's situation mirrors a national trend. In Delhi, the summer of 2024 recorded nearly 40 consecutive days above 40°C, pushing cooling infrastructure to its limits. The India Cooling Action Plan (2019) aimed to reduce cooling demand by 20%-25% by 2037-38, but the relentless pace of
climate change and urbanisation
has made achieving this goal challenging.
Natural solutions, like restoring urban water bodies, are being recognised as vital cooling agents that can help moderate city temperatures. Unchecked urban sprawl and pollution have eroded these natural buffers. Innovative approaches, such as using heat-reflective materials, cool roofs, and permeable pavements, are also crucial to mitigating UHI effects. Replacing conventional heat-trapping surfaces, like asphalt and concrete, can significantly lower surface temperatures. Expanding green cover through rooftop gardens, green walls, and urban forestry initiatives can promote evapotranspiration.
The report called for policymakers to tailor heat action plans to regional conditions — while cities like Delhi battle dry heat, coastal hubs like Kolkata and Mumbai must address the deadly combination of heat and high humidity.
Building urban resilience will depend on data-driven strategies, sustainable cooling technologies, and climate-sensitive urban planning, the report says.

Bhatti reviews monsoon preparedness
Hyderabad: Deputy chief minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka on Sunday said that police and forest officials should not unnecessarily enter ROFR lands where farmers are engaged in agriculture. "The state govt has decided to provide solar pump sets, sprinklers, and drip irrigation equipment free of cost to these farmers under the Congress govt's Indira Soura Giri Jala Vikasam scheme, at an estimated cost of Rs 12,600 crore over three years," Bhatti said. At a review meeting with the officials in Kothagudem Bhadradri district, Bhatti reviewed monsoon preparedness and stated that the water levels in Godavari at Bhadrachalam remain under control. However, he instructed officials concerned to implement all relief measures and ensure the availability of life jackets. A control room, he said, should remain operational until the end of the monsoon season. Officials were also instructed to conduct regular inspections and ensure that meals served in welfare hostels meet the quality standards prescribed by the government. "Since it is monsoon, health department officials should conduct regular medical checkups for students," he said. On promoting fish seed farming through self-help groups, the minister asked officials to prepare plans. "Currently, the govt is releasing 89 crore fish seedlings into water bodies every year. If SHGs in every district take up fish farming, it will create employment and evolve into a large-scale business," Bhatti told the collectors. Though the govt has announced Rs 20,000 crore worth of development of the road network in rural areas, some of the MLAs were yet to submit their proposals, and this should be done at the earliest. The deputy chief minister ruled out reports of urea shortage in the state. "There is no shortage of urea, and the govt is taking all necessary steps to meet the demand. There is no need for the farmers to worry," he said. Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy, who participated in the review, instructed the officials to take measures to prevent flooding from the Munneru and Godavari rivers, which previously submerged residential areas in Khammam and Kothagudem.

Flood alert issued along banks of Cauvery with inflow surging in Hogenakkal
Dharmapuri/Salem: A flood warning has been issued along the banks of Cauvery river, following discharge of excess water through 16 vent surplus gates of the Mettur dam and redirecting the water downstream into the river. With heavy rainfall in catchment areas of KRS and Kabini dams in Karnataka, the water inflow at Hogenakkal surged to 98,000 cusecs on Sunday. By 5pm on Sunday, the inflow increased to 88,000 cusecs, and by 7pm, it further climbed to 98,000 cusecs. Consequently, the Dharmapuri district administration prohibited bathing and coracle riding in the waterfall and surrounding areas to ensure the safety of tourism activities. It also issued a flood warning to residents living along the Cauvery river, advising them to seek safe shelter. The Hogenakkal police also conducted security operations along the Cauvery river and on the pathways leading to the waterfalls. Meanwhile, water resources department minister Durai Murugan said the inflow to Mettur dam has risen due to the release of excess water from dams in Karnataka. The dam's full capacity is 120 feet, and officials are urging farmers to manage the surplus water judiciously for optimal use. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Cargo Ship Meets Pirates - Watch What the Captain Does Next!
