Sporticast 451: Will NFL Players Dominate Olympic Flag Football?

Yahoo22-05-2025
On the latest Sporticast episode, hosts Scott Soshnick and Eben Novy-Williams discuss some of the biggest sports business stories of the week, including the latest with the NFL and flag football's inclusion in the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Olympics.
NFL owners voted this week to allow active players to take place in the sport's Olympic debut in Los Angeles. It opens the door for a maximum of one player from each team to play in the team representing the U.S. It's part of a push by the NFL to make the flag version of football a more viable commercial entity, and a more viable participation sport. That's especially true among young women and international populations, two growth areas for the world's richest sports league.

The hosts talk about whether NFL players would be the best performers in flag football. The Olympics 3×3 basketball did not use active NBA players, and many felt the U.S. team, which did not reach the knockout round in the 2024 Olympics, would have been better if it had. On the other hand, the two best singles tennis players in the world almost certainly wouldn't be the best doubles team at the Olympics. Regardless, NFL participation will be a big marketing boost for the sport.
Before that, the hosts discuss TGL expansion. The golf league launched last year by Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and TMRW Sports just added an expansion team in Detroit, backed by the owners of the Lions and the Broncos. The group paid more than $70 million for the team, Sportico reported this week. Teams that made their debut last year were sold in the $30-$35 million range.
The hosts also talk about the Fanatics Games, a blend of Pros vs. Joes and MrBeast's YouTube channel; the good (big ratings) and bad (social race-baiting) about the WNBA's opening weekend; and the sale of LiveBarn, the youth sports streaming platform whose backers include Susquehanna and Ares.

Emma Hayes' rebuild of USWNT is focused on process, not hype

By the time Emma Hayes walked into Audi Field's windowless press conference room on this steamy Tuesday afternoon in Washington D.C. to talk about Wednesday's friendly against Canada, we already understood her strategy for the U.S. women's national team pretty clearly. Rotation? Check. Young players getting their shot? Check. Tactical clarity? Almost there. Advertisement Hayes isn't simply constructing a roster. It's a system, a culture and a framework designed to restore the U.S. to the top of the women's game, one deliberate decision at a time. 'My job is to make sure that they compete for when they're actually ready, and maybe it won't be all at the same time for all of them,' she told reporters. 'My job is to create sustained winning. It's not my job, it's what I live for. 2027 World Cup, 2028 Olympics, 2029 Gold Cup, 2031 regardless of how long I'm here, and that's what my job is.' Hayes sure takes her job seriously. In just over a year at the helm, she has turned the USWNT into a live laboratory. There are no guarantees. It does not matter where players come from. She's not afraid to test, tweak, and teach. 'The exciting thing about coaching is … you have a clear model,' she said. 'There's probably some particular things I don't want to talk about now, because I want to win the game, but we've really leaned into parts of our model in the last two camps and started to see a return on all of that intentional and deliberate practice.' Deliberateness is the key to Hayes's success. Her coaching philosophy hinges on trust in the process and long-term development over short-term success. Under her reign, the team has proven successful, scoring 15 goals in four games in this last international window. When asked about individual players she is picking and choosing for key positions in the team, Hayes responded confidently. There are no guarantees. Take Sam Coffey. Hayes surprised Coffey with the captain's armband on Sunday, a move all her players now understand will be the norm. 'She's an impeccable learner. She's always wanting to improve her game. It never ends. It's never enough … and I think her game has gone to a whole new level,' said Hayes. But when listening to Hayes, it is clear that Coffey's inclusion, like many others she decided to bring on for this camp, isn't just about form. Every call-up is a lesson, every minute on the pitch a test of tactical understanding in order for Hayes to place them within the big picture strategy for her team. Even against Canada, arguably the USWNT's toughest rival in the region and for this camp, Hayes is not changing her process for the opponent. Advertisement 'I only focus on us,' she said with a grin. 'And it's not because it's Canada or anyone. I only focus on that. Seventeen goal zone entries is exceptional, but still only four goals. Are we taking the right decision when we're in the right areas? Sometimes. Are we executing at the top level in the right situations?' Her approach is already reshaping the team's dynamic. In Sunday's friendly against Ireland, Hayes rotated her entire starting XI, something that hadn't happened with the U.S. in nearly 25 years. That kind of risk-taking only works if the system in place is sound and the players are prepped. Especially in a squad where the competition is brutal, where even star players and veterans like Rose Lavelle, Lindsey Horan and Lily Yohannes are fighting for a spot in the starting XI. But that's Hayes's plan for her team, and she is in it for the long run. 'Our motto is to make every second count in our interactions with them and also maximize the time we can build relationships. Because sometimes it means being with different groups at different times,' she said about her long-term plans. 'I pinch myself every day that I'm in this job. This is like the biggest honor to me, maybe even more so than I thought it would be. And so often people say, be careful what you wish for, because dreams don't necessarily match up with it. They're right about that. This one's better.' (Top photo of USWNT coach Emma Hayes with Rose Lavelle: Jason Mowry / Getty Images)

Steelers CB Jalen Ramsey revealed what jersey number he'll wear in Pittsburgh

Roll out the red carpet, Pittsburgh — former Dolphins superstar CB Jalen Ramsey has arrived! The Steelers shocked the NFL world with their blockbuster acquisition on Monday — and it didn't take long for Ramsey to reveal what number he'd wear in Pittsburgh: No. 5. Ramsey wore No. 20 with the Jaguars and Rams, but switched to No. 5 when the new NFL jersey rule came into effect in 2021 — which allowed more positions to wear single-digit numbers. The Steelers will lean on Ramsey, Darius Slay Jr., and Joey Porter Jr. to carry the Black and Gold secondary — a trio of talented defensive backs that will definitely have their hands full in a competitive AFC North environment. Predicting Which Eagles Land in NFL's Top 100

Predicting Which Eagles Land in NFL's Top 100 originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The NFL is hours away from unveiling the Top 100 players from the 2024 season. As the defending Super Bowl champions, it's safe to assume that the Philadelphia Eagles will have more names listed in that group of honorees than any other team in the league. Advertisement Right? It's time to review the list of Eagles that should make the list this time. Our Who's Who … Lane Johnson Johnson might just be the best right tackle in football. So long as he continues to play at a high level, he will most assuredly have a spot on this list until he retires. Jordan Mailata If Johnson is the best right tackle, Mailata is right there as being a candidate for bring called the best left tackle in the game. His leadership and athleticism were fully displayed last season despite missing five games. Chauncey Gardner-Johnson Gardner-Johnson led the best defense in football with six interceptions. His outspoken nature added a new edge to their desperately needed defense. He may now be in Houston, but Gardner-Johnson's standing in Philly will remain. Advertisement Cam Jurgens In his first season replacing a future Hall-of-Famer in Jason Kelce, Cam Jurgens reached the Pro Bowl last year while stabilizing Philadelphia's offensive line. He deserves a spot on the top 100 list. A.J. Brown Brown is one of the best receivers in football. He missed four games last year, but still recorded over 1,000 yards receiving for the third straight year since he arrived in Philly. Zack Baun Baun came from nowhere but then was one of the best linebackers in the sport last season. A first-team All-Pro, the former Saints player is a sure-fire pick on the top 100 list. Jalen Carter Carter's numbers weren't the best of any interior defensive linemen, but this is one of those 'you gotta watch the game' guys as his impact on the Eagles was massive. He's a perennial All-Pro player who is only getting better. Advertisement Jalen Hurts You cannot have the Super Bowl MVP not make the list. Hurts was ranked highly after a down year in 2023, but it's a safe bet to assume he'll get a respectable slot after helping to lead the team to a championship. Saquon Barkley Barkley won't just be on the list … he might just get ranked as the top overall player. Barkley is more than safe to get that honor after a 2,000-yard season and an NFL record for total rushing yards in a single season, including the playoffs.
