AM Best Affirms Credit Ratings of Members of Farmers Insurance Group

Business Wire4 days ago
OLDWICK, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- AM Best has affirmed the Financial Strength Rating (FSR) of A (Excellent) and the Long-Term Issuer Credit Ratings (Long-Term ICR) of 'a' (Excellent) of the members of Farmers Insurance Group (Farmers). At the same time, AM Best has affirmed the Long-Term Issue Credit Ratings (Long-Term IR) of 'bbb+' (Good) on the outstanding surplus notes of Farmers Insurance Exchange (Woodland Hills, CA) and Farmers Exchange Capital (Wilmington, DE). The outlook of these Credit Ratings (ratings) is stable. (Please see below for a detailed listing of the companies and ratings.)
The ratings reflect Farmers' balance sheet strength, which AM Best assesses as strong, as well as its adequate operating performance, favorable business profile and appropriate enterprise risk management.
The overall assessment of Farmers' balance sheet strength reflects the group's very strong risk-adjusted capitalization, as measured by Best's Capital Adequacy Ratio (BCAR), stable loss reserve position, conservative investment portfolio and comprehensive reinsurance program. The ratings also consider Farmers' adequate operating performance, supported by a notable improvement in operating results in 2024.
In addition, management continues to implement meaningful initiatives to enhance underwriting performance through targeted pricing actions, refined risk-mitigation strategies, revised product offerings and further strengthening of underwriting oversight.
Partially offsetting these strengths are the group's elevated exposure to catastrophe losses and its reliance on approximately $2 billion in surplus notes.

AM Best Revises Outlooks to Stable for California Insurance Company and Affiliates

OLDWICK, N.J., August 05, 2025--(BUSINESS WIRE)--AM Best has revised the outlooks to stable from negative and affirmed the Financial Strength Rating (FSR) of A- (Excellent) and the Long-Term Issuer Credit Ratings (Long-Term ICRs) of "a-" (Excellent) of California Insurance Company (Foster City, CA) and its affiliates, which are collectively referred to as North American Casualty Group (NAC). Please see below for a detailed listing of the companies and Credit Ratings (ratings). The ratings reflect NAC's balance sheet strength, which AM Best assesses as very strong, as well as its strong operating performance, limited business profile and marginal enterprise risk management (ERM). The revised outlooks reflect improved governance at the company. In prior cycles, the group experienced delayed financial audits. Management strengthened the company's financial reporting team and reconstituted the board of directors to address many of the governance issues. The company's 2024 audits were completed in advance of their deadline, and the assignment of a more-prominent auditor was communicated to AM Best. While the group's protracted legal dispute over a conservatorship order is ongoing, the potential adverse financial consequences can be viewed as immaterial at this point in time. AM Best will continue to monitor the situation and respond if necessary. The FSRs of A- (Excellent) and the Long-Term ICRs of "a-" (Excellent) have been affirmed with outlooks revised to stable from negative for the following affiliates of California Insurance Company, which are collectively referred to as NAC: American Atlantic Assurance Co. How to ease the pain on American farmers

Farmers, a solidly Republican constituency, are scratching their heads over what they see as a barrage of friendly fire. Agriculture stands out as acutely vulnerable to President Donald Trump's avalanche of tariffs, mass deportations and potential new regulations. Soybean and corn farmers are panicking about Trump's trade wars, which expose them to retaliation from China, Canada and Mexico, their most important export markets. As American Soybean Association president Caleb Ragland put it: 'Tariffs are not something to take lightly and 'have fun' with.' That's a direct rebuke to Trump's suggestion that farmers sell 'INSIDE of the United States' and 'have fun.'
