UK Government Confirms £14.2bn Investment to Deliver Sizewell C
Ten thousand jobs will be created , the UK Government said, including 1,500 apprenticeships. It added that the funding would also support thousands more jobs across the UK.
The company has already signed £330 million in contracts with local companies and will boost supply chains across the UK with 70% of contracts predicted to go to 3,500 British suppliers, supporting new jobs in construction, welding, and hospitality.
The equivalent of around six million homes will be powered with clean homegrown energy from Sizewell C.
The announcement comes as the UK Government is set to confirm one of Europe's first Small Modular Reactor programmes. Taken together with Sizewell C, this delivers the biggest nuclear building programme in a generation, it said.
Energy Secretary Ed Miliband said:
'We will not accept the status quo of failing to invest in the future and energy insecurity for our country.
'We need new nuclear to deliver a golden age of clean energy abundance, because that is the only way to protect family finances, take back control of our energy, and tackle the climate crisis.
'This is the Government's clean energy mission in action- investing in lower bills and good jobs for energy security.'
The UK opened the world's first commercial nuclear power station in the 1950s, but no new nuclear plant has opened in the UK since 1995, with all of the existing fleet except Sizewell B likely to be phased out by the early 2030s.
Great British Nuclear is expected to announce the outcome of its small modular reactor competition imminently, the first step towards the goal of driving down costs and unlocking private finance with a long-term ambition to bring forward one of the first SMR fleets in Europe.
Small modular reactors are expected to power millions of homes with clean energy and help fuel power-hungry industries like AI data centres.
The UK Government said it was also looking to provide a route for private sector-led advanced nuclear projects to be deployed in the UK, alongside investing £300 million in developing the world's first non-Russian supply of the advanced fuels needed to run them.
Companies will be able to work with the UK Government to continue their development with potential investment from the National Wealth Fund.
The UK Government is also making a record investment in R&D for fusion energy, investing over £2.5 billion over 5 years. This includes progressing the STEP programme (Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production), the world-leading fusion plant in Nottinghamshire, creating thousands of new jobs and with the potential to unlock limitless clean power.

Mike Hawes, chief executive of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), claimed the motoring industry wasn't asked for input before the grant was launched, reports Birmingham Live. The SMMT had been pushing for a VAT cut on EVs sold to private buyers, saying that would do more to help the people who really need support. 'We get the ambition behind it,' said Hawes, 'but it's still not very clear.' Speaking when the news was first announced, Iain Reid, head of Editorial at Carwow, welcomed the new savings. Iain said: 'The Government's EV subsidy scheme is a welcome turning point – and one we've long been calling for. The decision to reintroduce support at the point of sale is exactly what's needed to rebuild consumer confidence; a saving of up to £3,750 available until 2028/29 could be decisive for many households considering an electric car for the first time. 'Manufacturers have done their part by bringing EV prices closer to petrol equivalents, and a grant targeted at the more affordable end of the market will help boost momentum.' ONE of Vladimir Putin's top lackeys has blasted Donald Trump's Ukraine ceasefire deadline as a "threat and a step towards war". Dmitry Medvedev, one of the Russian tyrant's closest allies, even compared Trump to "Sleepy Joe" Biden in his incendiary remarks. The US president has grown increasingly frustrated at the Russian tyrant's unwillingness to agree to a ceasefire in Ukraine. Trump said: "I'm disappointed in President Putin, very disappointed in him. "So we're going to have to look and I'm going to reduce that 50 days that I gave him to a lesser number." Advertisement Trump had promised during his election campaign last year to bring the war to end within 24 hours of assuming office. The White House has threatened bruising sanctions against Moscow if Vlad fails to comply with Trump's demands. "There's no reason in waiting, we just don't see any progress being made," Trump said. Trump has also floated the prospect of secondary sanctions that would affect those who buy oil from Moscow. Putin strikes Ukraine maternity ward in another outrageous snub to Trump But ex-Russian President Medvedev has now taken to social media to further furiously attack Trump's ultimatum. He warned Trump he should remember "two things" when putting down such demands and deadlines against Russia. The Putin confidante started by saying "Russia isn't Israel or even Iran". Advertisement But in a chilling warning, he added: "Each new ultimatum is a threat and a step towards war. "Not between Russia and Ukraine, but with his own country. Don't go down the Sleepy Joe road!" His "Sleepy Joe" remark is a reference to Trump's famous insult against former President Joe Biden - who rallied the West's initial response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Medvedev, who is now deputy chairman of Russia's Security Council, previously said Moscow should consider bombing the West - and claimed NATO is effectively at war with Russia. Despite Trump's pushes for a ceasefire, Russia's brutal attacks on Ukraine have only intensified in recent weeks. Head of the Ukrainian president's office Andriy Yermak said: "The Putin regime, which through certain individuals also threatens the USA, must face economic and military strikes that will deprive it of the ability to wage war." Washington-based think tank the Institute for the Study of War has warned that Putin uses this sense of conflict with the West to stir up support for the invasion at home. Dame Emily Thornberry, the chairwoman of the Commons Foreign Affairs Committee, welcomed the " major change in British foreign policy". It came as Mr Starmer last night piled the pressure on Israel to end the slaughter by declaring Britain will recognise Palestine as a state if conditions are not met The PM warned Benjamin Netanyahu that he will make the move in September unless the country agrees to certain terms, including a ceasefire in the Strip. But last night Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu hit back angrily at Mr Starmer's announcement. Posting on X, he said: "Starmer rewards Hamas's monstrous terrorism & punishes its victims. Appeasement towards jihadist terrorists always fails." Dame Emily told the BBC on Wednesday that despite the majority of Israeli people wanting peace its right-wing government "just wants continual war". Pressed on whether the UK was irrelevant in the conflict, she replied: "No, we're not irrelevant. If we're completely irrelevant, why has Netanyahu completely lost it overnight? It's not exactly a considered, careful, diplomatic statement, really. It's a furious statement." Dame Emily also praised the UK government's move - but other MPs urged ministers to go much further. Lib Dem leader Sir EdDavey said that Britain's actions must include "fully ceasing arms sales and implementing sanctions against the Israeli cabinet." Others including the ex-Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn criticised Mr Starmer for using Palestinian statehood as a "bargaining chip" with Israel. "It is not a threat. It is an inalienable right of the Palestinian people," he posted on X. On Tuesday evening the PM warned Mr Netanyahu that he will recognise the state of Palestine in September unless the country agrees to certain terms, including a ceasefire in the Strip. Mr Starmer had summoned ministers back from Parliament's summer recess for an emergency Cabinet meeting on the situation. He later told reporters a "catastrophic failure of aid" has meant Gazans are enduring terrible suffering and added: "We see starving babies, children too weak to stand, images that will stay with us for a lifetime. The suffering must end." Donald Trump had appeared to give the UK government the green-light on the issue as he met with the PM at his Scottish golf course. He suggested he did not mind Mr Starmer "taking a position" on the issue. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander also denied on Wednesday the PM's announcement to recognise the state of Palestine was a "reward for Hamas". She told Times Radio: "Not at all. This isn't about Hamas. "This is about the Palestinian people. It's been the longstanding position of my party and indeed this government when we came to power last year that we would recognise the state of Palestine at a point in time when it would have maximum impact."
