Battling Wrexham U19s lose out to Cardiff in shoot-out
While Wrexham had the lead at the interval, the Bluebirds battled back to level things up in the second half and they eventually went on to triumph 4-2 on penalties.
Things couldn't have started any better for Wrexham and they got their noses in front after four minutes.
Anna Owen struck to hand the Reds the lead, but an almost immediate impact from Scarlett Baker-Perry hauled Cardiff level midway through the second half.
She came off the bench on the hour and her goal came in the 66th minute.
Try as they might, neither side could find a winner and the play-off had to be decided by a penalty shootout.
Goalkeeper Grace Olsen took the spotlight as she saved the Reds' penultimate spot kick and then stepped forward to score Cardiff's final penalty.
Maizie Johnson and Seren Cashen found the target for Wrexham during the shootout.
While it was a heartbreaking loss to close the season for the young Reds, it's still been a cracking campaign for the squad.
They finished two points clear of The New Saints to take the Adran North title, losing only twice in the league.
Wrexham won their remaining 10 matches, scoring 37 goals in the process and conceding just eight.
Grace Morris was Wrexham's leading scorer in the league with 11 goals, while Leah Burke and Cashen supplied five assists apiece.
Wrexham's senior team will be looking for a different outcome this Sunday when they tackle Cardiff in the Welsh Cup final.

New skipper Rubin Colwill inspires Cardiff comeback win over Peterborough
Sir Alex Ferguson was in the stands at Cardiff City Stadium to support his son Darren, who saw his Peterborough team go into the break 1-0 ahead. New Cardiff boss Brian Barry-Murphy turned out the youngest team selected by any Cardiff manager this century but saw Posh draw first blood in the 33rd minute when Brad Ihionvien stepped up to coolly convert from the penalty spot after Will Fish had barged Declan Firth in the box. Cardiff, led for the first time by 23-year-old Colwill, earned their stripes in the second half of their first game in the third tier of English football in 22 years. The skipper led the way with a wonder free kick from 25 yards three minutes after the restart and then 18-year-old Ronan Kpakio hammered home his first senior goal to grab the lead on the hour mark. The visitors had a chance to level at the death, but Matt Turner made a brilliant save from Gustav Lindgren to save the day.

Darwin Nunez next club odds slashed as team makes move for Liverpool striker
The bookmakers expect Darwin Nunez to make a summer move to Saudi Arabia, with Al Hilal making a move in their pursuit of the Liverpool striker. The Uruguayan is available for transfer as the Reds significantly revamp their forward line after winning the Premier League title. Hugo Ekitike has arrived from Eintracht Frankfurt and Florian Wirtz has been brought in from Bayer Leverkusen, while Liverpool continue to be linked with the likes of Newcastle's Alexander Isak and Real Madrid's Rodrygo. Luis Diaz has left for Bayern Munich and of course the club lost Diogo Jota in tragic circumstances due to his shocking death last month. Nunez has been linked with a move away from Anfield all summer after a disappointing season on a personal level, despite the team's success under Arne Slot. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your team in the link we'll send you so we can get football news tailored to you. The 26-year-old scored just five Premier League goals in 30 appearances, netting seven times in 47 outings across all competitions. The Reds are happy to let him go, but want a significant return on the initial £64m they paid Benfica for him in 2022. Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal have made a move, with transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reporting that they have 'presented their project and plan to Darwin Nunez in recent days.' A deal is far from done, with negotiations still to take place between the clubs and the player. While a number of players have been tempted to the Saudi Pro League, plenty more have also decided they would prefer to continue their career in Europe, turning down the vast riches on offer in Saudi Arabia. 4/5 Any Saudi Arabian team3/1 AC Milan4/1 Liverpool9/1 Juventus 10/1 Newcastle Odds courtesy of bet365 Nunez may well have an option to make a big move within Europe, with AC Milan also interested in signing him this summer. Italian transfer expert Gianluca Di Marzio reports that the Uruguayan is AC Milan's first choice as they look for a new striker this summer and they have held talks with him already. The Serie A side will not be able to compete with Al Hilal on a transfer fee or wages, but will hope to appeal to Nunez by offering a higher level of competition. There is yet to be a bid from any side, with Napoli and Juventus also linked with a move for him this summer but their interest seemingly fading. It was a difficult season for the striker under Slot, with the manager criticising his work rate in February after back-to-back performances that disappointed the Dutchman. More Trending 'I helped him by saying you can miss a chance,' Slot told a press conference in February after Nunez made substitute appearances against Wolves and Aston Villa, missing a glaring opportunity in the latter. 'I wasn't only hard on him. But for the second time in a row I wasn't happy with his work effort, against Wolves and against Villa. 'I can't accept if a player doesn't give everything. That is clear. I can accept it once, but twice was a bit too much. That's why I addressed it. 'If you miss a chance, you need to be fighting for the team. I'm not saying he didn't do that at all, but it wasn't the usual Darwin, the one that is loved by the fans. That is mainly because he always works so hard.' Barry-Murphy praises Cardiff youngsters after opening win
New head coach Brian Barry-Murphy praised Cardiff City's young players as they helped him win his first game in charge against Peterborough from the Championship last season, the Bluebirds started life in League One with a 2-1 victory at Cardiff City Stadium on picked the youngest Cardiff team for a league fixture this century, handing first starts to the likes of goalkeeper Matt Turner – chosen in front of senior players Jak Alnwick and Ethan Horvath – and midfielder Joel goals were scored by academy graduates, Rubin Colwill and Ronan Kpakio."To have some of the academy graduates is really beneficial because they feel the club in a way that's different from what I do, based on where I come from, so it's really powerful," said Barry-Murphy."Matt Turner wasn't complicated [as a selection]. I had an idea of certain players before I came to the club. I didn't know a lot about Matt but, since day one pre-season, he's been exceptional."His attitude, in terms of what we asked him to do, his commitment and his skill level as a goalkeeper has been outstanding. Just based on what I saw, he was the clear pick."Joel, we have a lot of competition in that position, but again, his appetite to do the things we've asked him to do and his relentless nature of application was evident." Having fallen behind against the run of play, Cardiff responded well in the second half as Rubin Colwill – captaining the club for the first time – scored a brilliant an 18-year-old right-back, then curled in a fine first-time effort to put Cardiff in front."It was a great goal. His talent is obvious," said Barry-Murphy."I think where he ended up on the pitch for the goal [inside the penalty area] is important for me."He's a really attacking full-back who can be really dynamic and can cause the opposition a lot of problems."So to see him arrive in that position in the second half was what I wanted to see. He has that quality to produce assists and goals."
