
Thousands flock to Nampally for 170-yr-old fish prasadam tradition
This annual ritual is said to offer relief from respiratory ailments like asthma and bronchitis.
The event, which began at 11 am, was inaugurated by transport minister Ponnam Prabhakar. 'For 170 years, the Bathini family has been providing fish prasadam to lakhs. What began in Doodh Bowli has now evolved into a massive event,' he said.
The state's fisheries department reported over 50,000 tokens sold by 9 pm. 'We initially supplied 75,000 live murrel fish and are ready with another 75,000 if required,' said S Murali Krishna, joint director (planning).
A total of 370 staff were deployed in three shifts, managing 16 token counters and 32 prasadam distribution counters.
Organisers are expecting 4 to 5 lakh people this year—an estimated 10–15% increase over last year's turnout of 3.5 lakh. People from across India, including parents with young children, stood in long queues for hours to receive the herbal remedy.
The prasadam, offered free of cost by the Bathini Goud family, consists of a secret herbal paste filled into the mouth of a live fingerling murrel, which is then swallowed by the recipient. The offering comes in three forms: machli (fish with full yellow paste), kaarti (milder mix), and bellam (jaggery-based).
Bathini Amarnath Goud, great-grandson of the original practitioner Bathini Veeranna Goud, told TOI, 'A sage gave the herbal formula to my ancestor on the condition that it must never be sold. We have upheld that vow ever since.'

TOI Impact: Rights panel seeks report on uranium toxicity in Punjab groundwater
Chandigarh: Taking suo motu cognisance of a TOI report, Punjab State and Chandigarh Human Rights Commission has sought an explanation from Central Ground Water Board (CGWB) over alarming levels of contamination in Punjab's groundwater. The TOI report, published on Aug 5, revealed that nearly one-third of groundwater samples analysed by CGWB in Punjab contained toxic levels of uranium, along with harmful concentrations of arsenic, fluoride, and nitrate, raising serious public health concerns. The commission — comprising chairperson Justice Sant Parkash and member Justice Gurbir Singh — has directed the CGWB regional director to submit a report before the next hearing on Sept 25. The ministry of state for Jal Shakti, in response to Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal, noted that 32.6% of groundwater samples tested in Punjab exceeded the permissible uranium limit of 0.03 mg/L — the highest contamination rate among all tested parameters. By comparison, 10.7% of samples in Delhi breached the same threshold. Other toxic elements were also found in significant proportions. Fluoride levels exceeded the safe limit of 1.5 mg/L in 13.8% of samples, with long-term exposure linked to arthritis, infertility, hypertension, neurotoxicity, and skeletal cancer, as well as potential damage to the liver, kidneys, and lungs. Nitrate contamination was observed in 12.6% of 922 samples, surpassing the permissible limit of 45 mg/L. Arsenic levels were above the safety threshold of 0.01 mg/L in 4.8% of samples. Additionally, electrical conductivity (EC) exceeded 3000 µS/cm at 25°C in 6.7% of samples, indicating high salinity and the likely presence of dissolved solids.

Karnataka government set to regulate private ambulances by amending law
Bengaluru: The state govt has decided to amend the law to regulate private ambulances, especially their fares. "We'll be coming out with an amendment to the Karnataka Private Medical Establishments (KPME) Act any day and bring all ambulance service providers under its ambit. "At present, there's no licensing or specific registration facilities for ambulances and mobile medical units. Both of these will be brought under the KPME Act," he added. Rao's statement came after reports about a private ambulance charging Rs 8,500 to take a patient from Goraguntepalya to Victoria Hospital. "The health department has already taken the issue of private ambulances charging exorbitant rates seriously... I appeal that the health sector should be viewed with a service mindset and not just from a business perspective," the minister had posted on social media. Health officials told TOI the state govt aims to follow the Singapore model that has a central command centre, which will be used to track and monitor both private and govt ambulances. This could be a game-changer in emergency response as ambulances will be strategically stationed across the city and state, and not just at hospitals, an official added. At present, govt ambulances are equipped with a GPS tracker to help patients get to the nearest healthcare facility. The govt's 108 service has 88 ambulances across the city, but private ambulances run in the hundreds in Bengaluru alone. The new system would prevent underhand dealings among ambulance drivers to take patients to certain hospitals, a private hospital doctor opined.

17 health facilities to be upgraded across Delhi, tenders floated
New Delhi: To revitalise the capital's primary healthcare infrastructure, the Public Works Department has floated tenders to upgrade 17 govt-run health facilities, including dispensaries, primary health centres and one polyclinic, into modern Ayushman Arogya Mandir urban primary health centres. Ayushman Arogya Mandir, overall, is an attempt to move from a selective approach to healthcare to deliver a comprehensive range of services spanning preventive, promotive, curative, rehabilitative and palliative care. The makeover, estimated to cost around ₹3.2 crore, covers a wide spread of geography. The first set of upgrades, valued at ₹34.2 lakh, will target multiple primary health centres in Jaitpur and Meethapur, including a three-storey building in Jaitpur Village and another in Meethapur Extension's Harijan Basti. These are localities where residents long relied on basic dispensaries with minimal infrastructure and long queues. Another tender, worth ₹71.3 lakh, focuses on converting the Delhi govt dispensaries in Baljit Nagar and Ranjit Nagar, both densely populated, middle-income neighbourhoods. Similarly, the Basant Gaon polyclinic, serving a mix of urban poor and middle-class residents near south Delhi's diplomatic enclave, will see a ₹42.3 lakh upgrade under the scheme. A cluster of facilities in west Delhi's Ramdutt Enclave, Bindapur, Nangal Raya and Pandwalan Kalan are also set for conversion at a tendered cost of ₹84.2 lakh—one of the largest tenders floated under this phase. Patients visiting the newly upgraded centres now walk into brightly painted clinics with modern furniture, digital record systems, well-stocked medicine shelves, clean washrooms and better-equipped labs. For many residents, especially in slums and outer colonies, this marks a stark departure from the rudimentary clinics or polyclinics they previously depended on. While Delhi has already seen the Aam Aadmi Party govt promote its mohalla clinic model, the Ayushman Arogya Mandir initiative—spearheaded by central govt—seeks to standardise urban primary healthcare delivery across the country. With plans for more diagnostic tests, essential medicines, yoga sessions, teleconsultations and electronic health records, the revamped centres are expected to serve as the first point of contact for preventive, promotive and basic curative healthcare.
