SP indulging in appeasement politics: Pathak
Samajwadi Party
of indulging in "appeasement politics", alleging that statements of the party leaders reflect their intent to push for Sharia law in the country and to set the state on fire through communal riots, he said.
Pathak said the SP had a long history of "playing divisive politics" and was now making statements aimed at destabilising law and order and disrupting religious harmony during the ongoing Kanwar Yatra.
"The SP always engages in the politics of appeasement. We are fully committed to maintaining strict law and order in Uttar Pradesh under any circumstance," he said. The state govt's priority is to ensure that religious events such as the Kanwar Yatra proceed peacefully and without any inconvenience to the devotees, he added. "Our effort is to make sure that pilgrims get pure food and their preferred meals. Who is selling the food or where it is sourced from is not a matter of concern.
What matters is hygiene and quality," he said. Slamming statements by SP leaders on the Kanwar Yatra, he alleged they were trying to sow communal discord.

SP to hoist national flag at govt schools marked for closure: Akhilesh Yadav
Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav has announced that his party leaders will visit villages where primary schools are listed for merger by the Uttar Pradesh government and hoist the national flag on Independence Day. The move, he said, is to protest against the BJP's alleged attempt to deprive the poor of education. Akhilesh Yadav accuses BJP of closing government primary schools to silence voices of poor (File photo) Addressing a press conference at the party headquarters on Saturday, the former chief minister alleged that the BJP government is shutting down government schools as part of a larger plan. 'The BJP does not want the poor to study because an educated person raises questions on inflation, unemployment, and corruption. When schools are closed, how will girls pursue education?' he asked. He further claimed that many of the schools marked for merger were situated at polling booths where the BJP had lost in previous elections. 'On August 15, we will not only hoist the flag but also alert villagers about this deliberate strategy,' he added. Responding to a query on language politics, Akhilesh said his party supports all Indian languages and stands against any form of discrimination. 'From Hindi to Marathi, Tamil to Kannada and Urdu, we respect all languages. People are trying to gain politically by fuelling linguistic disputes. BJP wants to keep this issue alive for its own benefit,' he said. Akhilesh also alleged manipulation of voter lists by the BJP in every election. 'Every time, the BJP invents a new method to tamper with the electoral roll. Our party workers must remain vigilant and ensure the lists are corrected in time,' he said. On the UP government's decision to hand over the Jayaprakash Narayan International Centre (JPNIC) to the Lucknow Development Authority (LDA), Akhilesh accused the BJP of planning to sell the asset under a 'well-thought-out strategy.' He said the JPNIC was developed under the Samajwadi government as a world-class facility in honour of Jayaprakash Narayan, a prominent figure in the socialist movement. 'As soon as the BJP came to power, it made baseless allegations and dismantled the society governing the centre,' he said. At the event, Akhilesh also honoured Mihi Lal Gautam, a labourer from Lakhimpur who survived a leopard attack on June 24. The incident took place at a brick kiln in Baburi village, where Gautam fought the animal with his bare hands. Akhilesh presented him with a cheque of ₹2 lakh for his courage.

Others too need alliance in UP, not just Cong: Raj Babbar
Not just the Congress but others too need an alliance in Uttar Pradesh to win the election, said former Uttar Pradesh Congress president Raj Babbar on Saturday. Former Uttar Pradesh Congress president Raj Babbar (HT File Photo) 'The alliance isn't just Congress's responsibility but others too have to be in it equally,' said Babbar. Raj Babbar came to preside over the oath-taking ceremony of newly appointed district and city unit office-bearers of the Lucknow Congress. Babbar was UP Congress president in July 2016 and was replaced by Aj Kumar Lallu in October 2019 after he resigned. 'They should be in it (alliance) if they want to defeat the opponent you are contesting elections against, and you want to be the power to defeat them,' he said without taking the name of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). 'The alliance will be made on ground according to the situation (in the future) and not on the basis of the past,' he said. 'At present we are focused upon organisational strengthening (sangathan srijan) and the process is being done in the most transparent manner,' he said, adding, 'There are no faces that you can say belong to a particular group. The entire process is under a coordination committee and the aim is to unite with like-minded people who are loyal with the party and connect with old associates also in a strong manner. Sangathan Srijan will enhance credibility among workers and encourage accountability.' Commenting upon the political implications of the caste census Babbar said that it is going to change the scenario. 'Naturally. You may do anything or not but people, once they know their status via census, will raise demands. Here, the lines by Lohia are most relevant: Jiski Jitni Hissedari Uski Utni Bhagidari (share on the basis of population). 'The caste census is certainly going to change the upcoming political scenario in the state as we will get a clear picture of the Hissedari, the demand for Bhagidari will also become clear. It will impact the elections,' said Babbar. Asked about the state government's move demanding shopkeepers on the Kanwar route to display name and identity, Babbar said, 'Why is this being demanded during the Kanwar Yatra. If necessary, it should be for all times. Kanwar Yatra has been taking place for years and all respect it.' Responding to the recent language row in Maharashtra, Babbar said, 'It is the government's job to handle such issues with maturity, not provoke the people.'

Primary, upper primary schools: ‘Government's merger, pairing plan in sync with NEP'
There seems to be no looking back for the U.P. basic education department on its decision on the merger or pairing of primary and upper primary schools where enrolment is less than 50 students, an official said. A single-judge bench of Justice Pankaj Bhatia reserved the order on Friday evening after the state government presented its viewpoint, justifying the merger of schools. (FOR REPRESENTATION) The state government is hopeful that their counsel has presented the government's side well before the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad high court that has reserved the judgment for Monday. 'If we start the proposed pre-nursery or kindergarten schools for children before the age of 6, our students will be better prepared when they go to class 1,' an official said. Defending its decision, a senior official on Saturday clarified that only the policy of pairing is being implemented and not to close schools. This policy is in sync with the National Education Policy where one school is being designated for pre-primary and the other school for primary / upper primary school, the official added. Small schools are being linked with larger units. The schools, in which the enrolment of students is very low and where there are operational difficulties, are being linked with nearby big schools, an official said on condition of anonymity. The official argued that in several UP government schools where enrolment is relatively low, the education system can be made more effective and student-centric by proper and shared use of available physical and educational resources such as school buildings, classrooms, ICT equipment and various educational materials . A single-judge bench of Justice Pankaj Bhatia reserved the order on Friday evening after the state government presented its viewpoint, justifying the merger of schools. The government counsel apprised the court about such primary schools that have zero students. They also informed the court about primary schools where the strength of students was less than 15.
