Malaysia serve up dominant performance to reach Davis Cup play-offs
Koay Hao Sheng got Malaysia off to a strong start at the National Tennis Centre with a hard-fought 7-6, 7-5 win over Abdullah Ali Hatem Ghrairi.
Darrshan Suresh Kumar then made quick work of Akam Bakr with a dominant 6-1, 6-1 victory to give Malaysia an unassailable 2-0 lead, before Daniel Prickett-Naufal Siddiq Kamaruzzaman sealed the comprehensive win with a 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Mohammed Al Shammari-Abdullah Ali Hatem in the doubles.
The team will face Kyrgyzstan on Friday to determine the Pool A champions.
Darrshan was pleased with his form and is aiming to secure victory against Kyrgyzstan for a favourable play-off draw.
"It was quite solid. I am really happy with my performance, the way I was moving, especially my serves. I was struggling a bit yesterday, but today was much better," said the 18-year-old.
"We played Kyrgyzstan in a training session last week. They know our game style and we know theirs. It's pretty even... it will come down to who plays better tennis tomorrow."
"We need to secure the top spot. As you know, in the other group, anything can happen. Everyone here is solid. Everyone wants to win and earn promotion to Group III."
"Tomorrow (Friday) we have to win and finish top of the group, so we can play the number two team from the other group. We just have to do our part and hope for the best."
"We all want to win, especially after what happened last year when we were relegated to Group IV. It wasn't something we were proud of. This year, we're trying to fix that and get back to where we belong."
In the other Pool A, Kyrgyzstan defeated Nepal 3-0.

Team captain optimistic after Davis Cup success
KUALA LUMPUR: Davis Cup captain Adam Jaya believes his charges' strong performances in the Asia-Oceania Group IV competition which concluded on Saturday (July 19) bodes well for Malaysia's hopes in upcoming competitions. Malaysia topped Pool A in the competition after routing Nepal, Iraq and Kyrgyzstan - beating them all 3-0 - before downing Qatar 2-0 in the promotional playoff at the National Tennis Centre here on Saturday to secure promotion to Group III next year. Promotion was a relief for both Malaysian fans as well as the national body, Tennis Malaysia (TM). The squad was relegated from Group III last year. Malaysia had never competed in Group IV, which is the second lowest tier, prior to this. National team head coach Muliyadi Jamal opted to field a relatively young squad this year, featuring Darrshan Kumar, 18, Daniel Prickett (20), Leroy Yong (21), Naufal Kamaruzzaman (23) and Koay Hao Sheng (26). They dropped only one set throughout the whole competition. Adam hopes the players can continue their fine form at the Thailand Sea Games (Dec 9-20) as well as next year's Davis Cup. "Now that the job (promotion) is done, I believe we have a good group of players ahead of the Sea Games," said Adam yesterday (July 19). "We have the momentum now. I hope the players will continue to train and also compete in tournaments to maintain their form. "With this group of players, as well as a few who are not here, I believe we can be competitive at the Sea Games as well as in (Davis Cup) Group III next season. "We have been playing in Group III for many years so we know what it takes to stay there or to win it. We have the experience. "We, however, need to make sure our best players are available as Group III is an even tougher competition (compared to Group IV)." Southeast Asian heavyweights Thailand and Indonesia competed in Group III this year alongside Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Vietnam, Syria, Jordan, Sri Lanka and Cambodia. National team stalwart Hao Sheng was dependable as always, winning all four of his matches for Malaysia in Group IV this year despite feeling ill during his match against Kyrgyzstan's Mirgiiaz Mirdzhaliev. Darrshan was arguably the most outstanding player among the younger players in the squad, displaying outstanding court coverage, variety of shots and a solid serve which belies his diminutive physique. He thumped Iraq's Akam Bakr 6-1, 6-1 during the group stage before securing promotion for Malaysia with a decisive 6-3, 6-1 win over Qatar's Mossa Alharrasi. "He moves very well, this is his weapon but Darrshan also has good variety in his shots which are also quite powerful, this surprised many of his opponents," said Adam. "For a smaller player, he also has a very good serve." Darrshan will be leaving for the United States later next month to join the University of North Dakota where he will study biomedical engineering and play collegiate tennis. University of North Dakota is an NCAA division one school. Adam, who is also a former national coach, added that he is prepared to continue in his role as Davis Cup team captain next season. "Tennis has always been my passion and my love for the game will always remain the same," said Adam. "If I am offered the role of team captain, I will definitely accept it. My schedule is quite busy as I also have a business to manage but I will definitely find a way if my country needs me."

Malaysia makes swift return to Davis Cup Group III
KUALA LUMPUR: After suffering a disastrous outing in the Davis Cup last year, the national tennis squad gave fans plenty to smile about today (July 19). Malaysia secured promotion after beating Qatar 2-0 in the Davis Cup Asia-Oceania Group IV promotional playoffs at the National Tennis Centre here. Despite feeling ill yesterday (July 18), key player Koay Hao Sheng, 26, did not disappoint as he downed Mubarak Alharrasi 7-5, 6-2 to give Malaysia a 1-0 lead. Darrshan Kumar, 18, then sealed promotion to Group III next season by beating Mubarak's brother, Mossa, 6-3, 6-1. Malaysia was, for the first time in history, relegated from Group III last year. Hao Sheng admitted that there was pressure on the squad to immediately bounce back this season. Malaysia was also the top seed in the competition. "I was feeling a bit dizzy yesterday but had a good rest last night and felt better today. I am quite satisfied with my performance today, I managed the pressure and the match quite well," said Hao Sheng. "There was definitely pressure on us because this is the first time we have been in Group IV and we wanted to go back to Group III really badly. "As the oldest player in the squad, I felt responsible for the team. The other players, however, did really well and that took some of the burden off my shoulders." And it was double-joy for the Perlis-born as he will be celebrating his birthday next week (July 27). "I couldn't have asked for a better birthday gift, I really appreciate all the effort put in by the whole team," said Hao Sheng. The national squad topped Pool A earlier this week. They won all 11 matches they played, dropping only one set throughout the tournament. National team captain Adam Jaya promised he would rotate his players throughout the tournament and did just that, giving Darrshan, Leroy Yong and Daniel Prickett all a taste of singles action. Adam also switched them around with Naufal Kamaruzzaman in the doubles. "I am proud of my players because there were a lot of expectations on them, the whole nation wanted us to go back to Group III. They played well throughout the week," said Adam. "Hao Sheng has very good mental strength and showed great resilience even when he was not feeling well. "Darrshan, Leroy and Daniel are all of a similar level and rotating them kept our opponents guessing. It also creates good competition for spots in the team." As expected, unseeded favourites the Philippines, who topped Pool B, also secured promotion to Group III after beating Kygyzstan 2-0 in their playoff. Second seeds Pacific Oceana and Nepal were relegated to Group V next year after losing 2-1 to Iraq and 2-0 to Kuwait respectively in the relegation playoffs. The Philippines tennis federation was suspended by the ITF in late 2020 due to governance issues. The suspension was lifted in January last year which is why they are currently making their way back up from the lower divisions in both men's and women's tennis.

Malaysia face do-or-die Davis Cup battle against Qatar
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia will take on Qatar in a do-or-die battle in the Davis Cup Asia-Oceania Group IV playoff tomorrow — with promotion to Group III on the line. Malaysia, led by captain Adam Jaya, booked their spot in the playoff as Pool A champions with a 3-0 win over Kyrgyzstan at the National Tennis Centre today. Koay Hao Sheng battled to a 6-4, 5-7, 5-2 victory over Mirgiiaz Mirdzhaliev, clinching Malaysia's first point after his opponent retired in the deciding set. Leroy Yong then clinched the tie with a hard-fought 6-4, 7-6 win against Ilgiz Kamchibekov. The doubles pairing of Darrshan Suresh Kumar-Daniel Prickett completed the sweep, defeating Kirill Kistanov-Erbol Eldiyar Uulu 6-2, 6-0. A play-off win against Pool B runners-up Qatar will earn Malaysia promotion to Group III next year. Adam said he was pleased with the team's performance against Kyrgyzstan, but expects Qatar to give a tough challenge. "These past three days have been satisfying. As you saw, my first singles players over these three days were three different players. In the group, we won all our matches but nothing is more important than tomorrow's D-Day," said the non-playing team skipper. "Qatar is a very good team. Like Malaysia, they have experience in Group II and Group III, and are now in Group IV. Their players are consistent and fit." In the other Pool A match played today, Iraq beat Nepal 3-0. In Pool B, the Philippines cruised to a 3-0 win over Qatar to finish top and will meet Pool A runners-up Kyrgyzstan.
