Major Coronation Street legend teases ‘fun' return after 21 years

Suranne Jones has sparked a wave of excitement among Coronation Street fans after revealing she wouldn't rule out a return to the soap that helped launch her career. In a recent interview with The Times, the actress said she'd be open to stepping back into the role of Karen McDonald more than two decades after she last appeared on the cobbles. 'Why not?' she said, adding that, with so many years gone by, 'it might be fun.' Suranne first joined Coronation Street in 2000 and quickly became a household name thanks to her explosive performance as Karen, the fiery and ambitious wife of Steve McDonald, played by Simon Gregson. Their on-screen chemistry, along with Karen's sharp wit and fierce personality, made her one of the show's most iconic characters of the early 2000s. Jones left in 2004 and has since gone on to build a highly respected career, with standout roles in Doctor Foster, Gentleman Jack, Save Me, and the Netflix thriller Hostage. Reflecting on her time on the soap, Suranne admitted to The Times that while she once would have dismissed the idea of going back, her perspective has shifted over time. 'I'd have said no years ago,' she said. 'But maybe now. I think it would be interesting.' Her comments come at a time of major change for Coronation Street. This year alone, several long-time cast members have announced their exits, including Helen Worth, Sally Ann Matthews, Charlotte Jordan, Shelley King, and Colson Smith. Most recently, it was confirmed that Sue Devaney's character, Debbie Webster, will be written out in a long-running dementia storyline that's expected to conclude in 2027. This comes just weeks after Suranne Jones opened up in a Celebrity Angels interview about the challenges she faced early in her career. Reflecting on that time, she said, 'It was huge. The paps were chasing us; it was just a different time. It was not fun, not when you're young.' She added, 'It was around the time of people needing to look a certain way, and all of that ring of shame, that's the era that we're talking about.' Continuing, Suranne revealed, 'I was in the press a lot back then, and I had people outside my house. I was being followed.' View More » With all the changes happening on the Cobbles, the idea of Suranne Jones popping back in as Karen feels like something fans could really get behind. She brought a fiery spark and sharp humour that a lot of viewers say has been missing lately. A comeback wouldn't just be nostalgic; it could actually bring a bit of that old Corrie magic back. Nothing's confirmed, of course, but with Suranne saying she's open to it, it's fair to say the door isn't entirely closed. And honestly? Fans love to see it. EastEnders fan-favourite says tearful goodbye in early iPlayer release

This article contains spoilers for tonight's episode of EastEnders, which airs at 7.30pm on BBC One or can be streamed now on iPlayer. Oscar Branning (Pierre Moullier) has made a tearful farewell to nephew Jimmy after committing a serious crime. Earlier this week, his thuggish associate Fat Mike (Tai Hilferink) demanded a whopping 5k in exchange for the Branning-Beale family's safety. At a lost cause with where to find this money, Oscar attempted to get a few extra shifts at Ian Beale's (Adam Woodyatt) chippy, but his efforts fell flat. He even suggested that the businessman expand his empire selling food at the park. Desperate, he told sister Lauren (Jacqueline Jossa) of his predicament, and she begged her boss Jay Brown (Jamie Borthwick) for an advance on her wages. He told her that she'd have to sell some cars before he could find the money – something she was prepared to do to save her family from further turmoil. As Jay went to collect Lauren's wages, an unaware Oscar set about finding an alternative cash source. Across the road, Patrick Trueman (Rudolph Walker) was horrified to spot a masked intruder holding his bookies winnings. He slammed the living room door closed and prepared to stage an intervention when the robber launched towards him. During the scuffle, Patrick's head hit the floor and he was knocked unconscious. The burglar was of course Oscar. In tonight's episode, he called emergency services from Patrick's phone before preparing to flee. When Howie Danes (Delroy Atkinson) arrived at the scene of the crime, he made a run for it. Just moments before, Lauren had a run in with Mike, and handed over her wages from Jay. She and Oscar have doubled up on the cash. Oscar's concern began to grow as he watched the police and ambulance presence in The Square, and Lauren was confused as to why he was so visibly worried for a man he doesn't really know.
