Malaysia Sun8 hours ago
KUALA LUMPUR, July 11 (Xinhua) -- China is ready to promote the comprehensive strategic partnership with Australia through a more proactive approach, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said here on Friday.
China is willing to work with Australia to prepare for the next stage of high-level exchanges, maintain the momentum of improvement in bilateral ties and properly manage their differences, Wang said.
Wang made the remarks during a meeting with Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong in the Malaysian capital on the sidelines of the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting and related meetings.
Over the past three years, China-Australia relations have stabilized, turned around and achieved positive results, said Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee.
It proves that as long as the two countries uphold a correct positioning of their partnership, bilateral relations can develop steadily and continue to yield results, Wang said.
The Chinese foreign minister noted that Australia's rational and pragmatic policy toward China serves the interests of both countries and aligns with the trend of the times.
For her part, Wong said that Australia is committed to developing a positive and pragmatic relationship with China.
Both sides are making every effort to prepare for high-level exchanges and look forward to achieving positive outcomes, she said, adding that dialogue and cooperation between Australia and China in trade, tourism and other fields have continued to make progress, and personnel exchanges have become increasingly active.
Wong noted that Australia remains firmly committed to the one-China policy and does not support "Taiwan independence."
Australia is willing to engage in candid communication and deepen cooperation with China to promote the sustained and positive development of bilateral relations, she said.
Wong said that Australia supports the central role of ASEAN and is committed to maintaining regional peace and stability.
The two sides also exchanged views on issues including the South China Sea and the Ukraine crisis.

ECRL marks new milestone with Genting Tunnel breakthrough, set to be longest rail tunnel in South-east Asia

BENTONG, July 12 — Malaysia's ambitious East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) marked a major milestone today with the successful breakthrough of the 16.39km Genting Tunnel – expected to be the longest railway tunnel in South-east Asia. Transport Minister Anthony Loke, who launched the event, said the tunnel would significantly improve logistics between the east and west coasts of peninsular Malaysia by connecting Kuantan Port and Port Klang, The Star reported. 'It will certainly complement international trade, making it more attractive for businesses by boosting export-oriented industries as its 'last-mile' connectivity, linking Kuantan Port and Port Klang, will bring both coasts closer together and ease the transfer of goods along the ECRL network,' he was quoted as saying. The Genting Tunnel, which passes under the Titiwangsa Range, has been recognised in the Malaysia Book of Records as both the country's longest railway tunnel and the one with the highest overburden. Loke said the achievement demonstrated strong engineering cooperation between Malaysia and China, as well as the commitment of ECRL personnel across all 41 tunnel excavation sites. The ECRL has been touted as a 'game changer' for the movement of passengers and freight in peninsular Malaysia. When complete, the rail line will link state capitals, major urban centres, industrial hubs, seaports, airports, and tourism zones up and down as well as the east and west coasts of the peninsula. With construction now 84.59 per cent complete as of June, Loke said the ECRL is on track to begin operations in January 2027. 'With the progress reaching 84.59per cent as of June, the Transport Ministry is confident that the Malaysian Rail Link is on the right track and operational by January 2027,' he was quoted as saying.

Aik Cheong aims top coffee spot

Published on: Saturday, July 12, 2025 Published on: Sat, Jul 12, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: Founded in 1995 in Melaka, Aik Cheong has grown into one of Malaysia's most recognisable heritage beverage brands, now present in over 40 countries worldwide. Kuala Lumpur: Expo 2025 Osaka serves as a strategic platform for Aik Cheong Coffee Roaster Sdn Bhd to strengthen its international presence and showcase Malaysia's homegrown excellence on a world-class platform. Its director, Tang Joo Shen, said the expo offers exposure to over 28 million projected visitors and global media, reinforcing Aik Cheong's position as a brand ready to scale with purpose, not just profit. 'That global ambition does not end in Osaka. Aik Cheong's ambition is clear: to become the largest local coffee brand by 2030, with a significantly expanded footprint in international markets. 'The goal is to build a brand ecosystem that honours where we come from, reflects where the world is heading, and continues to serve what modern consumers truly value,' he said in a statement to Bernama. Founded in 1995 in Melaka, Aik Cheong has grown into one of Malaysia's most recognisable heritage beverage brands, now present in over 40 countries worldwide. Tang emphasised that to bring the vision to life, Aik Cheong is embracing bold, forward-thinking strategies by being open to new tech, cross-branding, and partnerships with startups. 'That is how we stay relevant. It is a mindset that blends legacy with agility—a rare combination in today's fast-moving food and beverage (F&B) space. 'As Aik Cheong brews its next chapter, one thing is certain: this is no longer just a kopitiam brand. It is a case study in how Malaysian heritage can evolve into global relevance,' he said, adding that through the expo and beyond, Aik Cheong isn't just serving coffee, it's serving vision. In addition, Tang said that Expo 2025 Osaka positions the brand not just as a coffee roaster, but as a symbol of how Malaysian brands are redefining themselves for the future. For Aik Cheong, the international expansion is not a numbers game; it's a long-term investment built on deep market understanding, he added. 'We don't rush into new markets. Our approach begins with proper market surveys and finding the right partner, because poor entry can damage the brand. 'In Western countries, demand leans toward fresh brews, but in Asia and the Middle East, instant beverages are still growing. That's where our focus has been over the last five years,' Tang said. The company has made notable strides in diversifying its offerings, from the IT'S series to cold brews and coconut-based creamers aimed at health-conscious consumers. 'Our team has stepped up since COVID. We have invested heavily in research and development (R&D), and we were the first to launch instant caramel macchiato in Malaysia and Southeast Asia. And innovation isn't limited to taste,' he added. Tang noted that Aik Cheong is also leading in product storytelling and creative branding, where it is now trending across Shopee, Lazada, and TikTok. 'Thanks to our team's creative push toward fun, minimalist designs and digital-first campaigns. These ideas aren't just used locally; we apply them to international markets too,' he said, adding that this commitment to innovation extends beyond product development, it's deeply embedded in how the company operates and connects with its customers. Tang highlighted that the Aik Cheong e-commerce team plays a pivotal role in product launches, consumer engagement and market analytics—ensuring the brand evolves alongside its customers. 'Behind the scenes, a forward-thinking procurement strategy ensures quality remains uncompromised even as the brand scales. Our supply chain team goes to great lengths—from sourcing to R&D sessions with both local and international suppliers—to improve current offerings and explore new ideas. 'Partnerships remain a core part of Aik Cheong's long-term brand equity strategy, not just for visibility, but for impact. Partnerships like the Malaysia Pavilion at Expo 2025 allow us to not only expand our reach but contribute meaningfully through CSR and cultural storytelling,' he said. Tang said that this mindset reflects a brand that isn't chasing virality, but value, building presence through considered alignment with platforms that elevate Malaysia's F&B industry as a whole. 'The World Expo in Osaka marks a major milestone for Aik Cheong. Our goal is to showcase a Malaysian company that is deeply rooted in culture, yet progressive in innovation. 'If we can open doors to new business partnerships, even better, but at its core, this is about representing Malaysia on a world stage,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? ASEAN boosts social resilience with focus on skills, climate, and care economy

by AUFA MARDHIAH ASEAN is stepping up efforts to build a more inclusive and people-centred region by investing in human development, health, culture and climate resilience under the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community (ASCC) pillar. In a joint communiqué following the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting, the bloc reaffirmed its focus on data-driven policymaking and collaboration across sectors. This includes the rollout of a new platform on the care economy. 'It will explore the valuation of care work, the implications of demographic shifts, and the development of sustainable care policies,' it said. Ministers also expressed strong support for growing ASEAN's cultural and creative economy. They welcomed the new sustainability framework for creative industries and looked forward to adopting the Melaka Declaration. 'Cultural heritage has the potential to promote economic growth, social cohesion, cultural preservation and sustainability,' it said. Addressing the growing concerns over disinformation, ASEAN reiterated its commitment to building a safer digital environment. The communiqué noted regional efforts to 'strengthen ASEAN's cohesion and mutual understanding, enhance cooperation in combating fake news and disinformation, and promote the safe and responsible use of social media platforms.' On future skills, Malaysia is leading the ASEAN Year of Skills 2025. The region is also expanding green jobs training and preparing a ministerial action plan to help workers adapt to rapid changes in labour markets, especially through AI and sustainability-focused upskilling. The bloc also reaffirmed its commitment to protecting migrant workers, pledging to promote fair recruitment and better reintegration systems, while acknowledging 'the principle of shared and balanced responsibilities of the receiving and sending ASEAN Member States.' Health security remained a priority, with ASEAN aiming to improve regional drug and vaccine self-reliance under the ASEAN Declaration of Commitment on Drug Security and Self-Reliance. It also supported wider access to diagnostics and efforts to tackle malnutrition and ageing through nutrition plans and active ageing strategies. On disaster preparedness, ASEAN committed to strengthening the ASEAN Agreement on Disaster Management and Emergency Response (AADMER) framework and continuing humanitarian support through the AHA Centre. Ministers commended the centre's rapid response following the March 2025 earthquake in Myanmar. 'It played a vital role in coordinating humanitarian assistance, supporting and facilitating relief operations, and ensuring timely and effective humanitarian response,' they said. The communiqué also emphasised stronger regional climate action, including the operationalisation of the ASEAN Centre for Climate Change and preparing a joint statement ahead of COP30. 'We reaffirmed our collective commitment to jointly addressing the global challenge of climate change,' it said. Other focus areas include gender equality, disability inclusion, child protection and rural development. The ASEAN Villages Network and the One Village One Product initiative were highlighted as efforts to reduce urban-rural disparities and boost community-based growth. The bloc is also preparing a declaration on future-ready public service, aiming to make ASEAN governance more digital, ethical and people-centric. These efforts reflect ASEAN's long-term vision for a united, resilient and sustainable community by 2045.
