Jonathan Huberdeau's $84M deal slammed as NHL's worst contract amid sharp performance drop
NHL analyst Dom Luszczyszyn of The Athletic has ranked Jonathan Huberdeau's eight-year, $84 million contract with the Calgary Flames as the worst in the league—citing a steep decline in production and an ever-widening gap between salary and value.
Huberdeau, who once lit up the league with 115 points in his final season with the Florida Panthers, mustered only 62 points across 81 games last season.
A once-elite winger now struggling to meet expectations in Calgary
Jonathan Luszczyszyn's model evaluates a player's projected performance against their salary cap hit. Huberdeau, earning $10.5 million annually, reportedly delivers a 'Net Rating' nearly nine goals below expectations for someone at his pay grade. 'While it's not impossible that Huberdeau can bounce back toward a high-end first-line level, it is very unlikely.
Especially with Calgary, a team devoid of much capable offensive help," Luszczyszyn wrote.
Contract value drops sharply with age and Flames' limited support
At 32, Huberdeau is approaching a stage in his career where most players start declining, and Luszczyszyn's model reflects that. While he still ranks as a decent top-six forward—worth over $6 million—his cap hit remains among the most bloated in the NHL. Even more damning: this is the second consecutive year Huberdeau's deal tops the list of the league's worst contracts.

The analyst added that while the original deal was slightly above his market value at the time (estimated around $9.9 million), 'no one could have predicted such a dramatic drop-off in his play.' He also noted that Huberdeau may thrive in a better offensive environment, but 'at $10.5 million a year, he's far from delivering on that value.'
Making things worse, Huberdeau's former team—the Florida Panthers—have appeared in three straight Stanley Cup Finals and won two, while Calgary continues to flounder. 'It's a tough beat for the former superstar. He's spent the last two seasons struggling to live up to a massive cap hit,' Luszczyszyn concluded.

Now, Flames fans and analysts alike are left wondering: is this the beginning of the end for Huberdeau's stardom—or simply a bad fit in Calgary?

West Indies' Jason Holder (AP Photo/Lynne Sladky) Jason Holder showcased an outstanding all-round performance as West Indies secured a dramatic two-wicket victory against Pakistan in the second Twenty20 international, levelling the three-match series. Holder delivered an exceptional bowling spell, claiming 4-19 in his four overs, restricting Pakistan to 133 for nine after they chose to bat first in Florida. West Indies faced challenges during their chase as Pakistan's spinners maintained tight control. However, crucial contributions from Gudakesh Motie and Romario Shepherd kept them in contention before Holder's final-ball boundary off Shahid Shah Afridi sealed the win. They helped recover the team from a difficult position of 53-4 in the tenth over. Mohammad Nawaz continued his impressive form, taking 3-14 in four overs, following his three-wicket haul in Pakistan's victory in the first match. The West Indies batting struggled on the spin-friendly pitch, losing regular wickets. They found themselves in trouble at 70-5 in the 14th over after Roston Chase's dismissal. The final over required eight runs for victory. After Shepherd's dismissal and three singles, a wide delivery from Afridi left West Indies needing three runs from the last ball. "We've had a fair bit of criticism which is warranted. We haven't done justice to our potential. We can be a lot better, consistency has definitely plagued us," said player-of-the-match Holder. IND vs ENG Test: Former England skipper says Mohammed Siraj brings Kohli-Rohit-like intensity to Team India - 'He lifts the team'
India's Mohammed Siraj walks off field after the third day's play of the fifth cricket test match between England and India at The Kia Oval in London, Saturday, Aug. 2, 2025. (AP Photo/Kirsty Wigglesworth) Former England captain Nasser Hussain believes Mohammed Siraj brings a unique energy to the Indian team, comparable to what Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma offer on the field. "With Chris Woakes going down injured for England, Siraj is the only fast bowler who has lasted the course of the series and put in spell after spell," Hussain wrote in his column for The Daily Mail. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! "He is the sort of bloke a captain absolutely loves. He lifts the team. I always talk about Darren Gough being that sort of person when I was England captain, and Siraj is that man for India." Hussain also lauded the fighting spirit India have shown throughout the series. "I have been hugely impressed with the character and fight they have shown throughout this series," he said. India vs England Day 4 weather forecast: More rain in store for Day 4, which team will benefit? "Some people thought they might roll over after the way they lost at Headingley, but they have since shown what a tough side they are to beat. "They have won as many sessions as England, if not more. They have just been found wanting in some of the crucial moments. "It is especially impressive when you consider they lost legends Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli right before the series." Mohammed Siraj has bowled an impressive 155-plus overs across nine England innings, and not once did the thought of physical breakdown cross his mind during this marathon series. At a time when the term 'workload management' is in vogue, Siraj lasting five Tests and already picking up 18 wickets from four games is a testimony to his world-class fitness and stamina. Poll Do you believe India can win the series despite losing key players? Yes, they have the character No, it's too challenging Maybe, it depends on performance "I don't think about breaking down. I only think about the match. I love playing for the country and I want to give everything to the country. I keep my plans simple and try to give my everything, and results do follow," Siraj told Sky Sports during an interview with former India player Dinesh Karthik . Siraj, who has shouldered a lot of extra responsibility in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah—who could only play three Tests due to workload management—said he enjoys taking on the challenge. "To be honest, I love responsibility, but I also miss Jassi bhai because he is a senior bowler and leads by example in terms of what lines and lengths to bowl to various batsmen. I like that. "When Jassi bhai isn't around, you get that confidence that you need to shoulder extra responsibility, and I enjoy that. I don't take extra pressure and try to keep things simple."
