SUDBURY, Ontario, June 03, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Nine events across Ontario are honouring the Spring 2025 graduating class from Boréal's campuses in Hearst, Kapuskasing, Nipissing, Ottawa, Sudbury, Timmins, Toronto, Windsor and Boréal Online. In the presence of parents, families, and loved ones gathered for the occasion, Collège Boréal President Daniel Giroux, along with members of the senior leadership team, will present no fewer than 901 diplomas this spring.
Governor General's Academic Medal
Roxanne Daoust, a graduate of the Early Childhood Education program offered through Boréal Online, received the Governor General's Academic Medal. This honour is awarded to a full-time student who achieves the highest academic standing in a diploma program of at least two years in length.
Honorary Diploma
This year, Collège Boréal is awarding an Honorary Diploma in Business and Community Services to Maxim Jean-Louis, President and CEO of Contact North. Under his leadership, Contact North has significantly expanded access to distance post-secondary education for people living in rural communities. Thanks to his efforts, more than four million individuals in remote areas now have access to quality training without having to leave home. Over the years, Maxim Jean-Louis has deepened his community involvement, contributing his expertise to the boards of the International Council for Open and Distance Education, the Renewed Technology Council, the Ontario Trillium Foundation, Laurentian University, the Art Gallery of Sudbury, and the Hôpital Montfort Association.
Collège Boréal President's Award and Board Chair Award
Presented respectively to private-sector and community-based organizations, Collège Boréal's President's Award and Board Chair's Award recognize outstanding contributions to the development of the College and its communities.
This year's President's Award is being presented to Technica Mining in recognition of its generous equipment donations, which have significantly enhanced training for students in the Heavy-Duty Equipment Technician, Civil and Mining Construction Engineering Technician and Mechanical Millwright Technician programs. Technica Mining's ongoing support – through the hiring of Boréal student interns and the endorsement of the College's pre-apprenticeship program proposals, including those aimed at women – makes it a key partner.
The Board Chair's Award goes to Health Sciences North (HSN). A key partner to post-secondary institutions, HSN provides placement opportunities to Boréal students in a range of health programs. This collaboration allows students to gain valuable hands-on experience, sharpen their skills, and prepare for the workforce. Like Collège Boréal, HSN relies on cutting-edge technology and simulation-based learning to support the training of health professionals.
Boréal Foundation
Thanks to the generosity of individuals and organizations that supported the Boréal Foundation in 2024–2025, nearly 3,300 scholarships were awarded to Boréal students, for a total of close to $1.7 million.

8 Reasons Why Boomers Take Out Personal Loans

As per Q1 2025 TransUnion data, the total unsecured personal loan debt was $253 billion spread across 29.8 million loans. The average unsecured loan amount per borrower was $11,631. Nearly anyone can apply for a personal loan, assuming they meet the credit and income requirements. This includes baby boomers — those born between 1946 and 1964. Find Out: Consider This: But why do boomers take out personal loans? And what should they be on the lookout for when doing so? Here's what the experts say. Key Reasons Boomers Use Personal Loans Boomers can apply for a personal loan for nearly any reason. According to Chris Motola, special projects editor and financial analyst at National Business Capital, the biggest reasons include: Purchasing a big-ticket item like a vehicle (auto loan) or home (mortgage loan). Time-sensitive or expensive purchases related to medical conditions (e.g. mobility-related home improvements). Elective medical procedures. 'In many of these cases, a personal loan is seen as an alternative to selling off income-generating assets,' Motola said. But these aren't the only reasons for taking out a personal loan. And for some boomers, buying a new car or house isn't top of their list. Explore More: However, paying off high-interest debt — like credit cards — often is. According to the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, the average U.S. household owes approximately $6,065 in credit card debt. With typical APRs of 22.8% and retirement income often limited or fixed, per the Consumer Finance Protection Bureau, it's prudent to get rid of said debt with something a little less expensive. 'Most of the time, people can qualify for a personal loan rate much lower than credit card rates,' said Kyle Enright, president of lending at Achieve. 'So they can use the personal loan proceeds to pay off the higher-rate credit card debt, then be left with just the personal loan payment at the lower rate. This makes it faster and less expensive to pay off the debt.' Other common reasons boomers take out personal loans include: Home maintenance or repairs Remodeling Medical bills A relative's educational expenses Considerations When Taking Out a Personal Loan Ultimately, it's up to the individual's financial situation, credit score and needs as to whether or not they use a personal loan — and for what purpose. Whether you're a boomer or have an older relative who's considering a loan, knowing the options is important. But what's equally crucial is understanding the consequences of taking on that debt. 'If you're living on a fixed income, pay very close attention to the interest rates you're offered,' said Motola. 'You don't want to take on debt that your income can't keep up with, and you don't want to be forced to liquidate the assets you've spent your whole life accumulating at a loss.' It's generally best to avoid financing everyday expenses with debt. Consider the cost of repayment, including the term, interest and any fees. Make sure you have a clear plan so you don't risk defaulting on the loan. Make sure you're taking out the loan for the right reasons. 'If you're already struggling to make minimum required payments on current debts, chances are high that taking on more debt (personal loan) won't be helpful,' said Enright. 'Instead, you may need to look into other help, such as debt settlement, which involves negotiating with creditors to lower principal balances due.' Why GE's power spin-off is one of the biggest winners from the AI boom

GE Vernova's (GEV) latest quarter highlights why the power equipment maker is a Wall Street favorite. Shares of the Cambridge, Mass.-based company rallied 15% on Wednesday after orders for gas turbines and other equipment jumped in the second quarter — thanks to the AI-boom build-out of data centers, which have fueled electricity demand. GE Vernova posted adjusted earnings of $1.78 per share, versus estimates of $1.55. Revenue also came in above expectations at $9.11 billion, topping estimates of $8.8 billion. 'We've already received almost $500 million in orders in the first half of 2025 versus $600 million in full year 2024, so this growth market continues to accelerate,' CEO Scott Strazik told analysts during the company's earnings call. He highlighted "strong demand" from data centers. Alongside strength in gas services, steam services orders, which support nuclear, rose 30% during the quarter. Nuclear power is another key electricity source for hyperscalers, such as Amazon (AMZN), Microsoft (MSFT), Google (GOOG), and Meta (META), which are looking for all and any power sources to fuel AI growth. The so-called Big Tech hyperscalers, large tech companies operating cloud and AI data centers around the world, have said they will spend a cumulative $325 billion in 2025 as they rush to build out infrastructure. Wall Street sees GE Vernova's backlogs, or orders that have been placed, as a big beneficiary of the data center trend. 'We believe GEV's expanded equipment and services backlog, which grew over $14B Y/Y to $128.7B, supports long-term sales visibility and improves our confidence in the company's margin and EPS growth potential,' CFRA Research analyst Daniel Rich said Wednesday. Read more about GE Vernova's stock moves and today's market action. Since spinning out of GE (GE) in April 2024, GE Vernova has positioned itself at the intersection of data centers, AI, and rising power demand. One Wall Street analyst dubbed the company the "supermarket" for the electric power industry, offering everything from natural gas turbines for generating electricity to power plant and grid modernization services to wind turbine construction. The company is also expanding its footprint in electrical grid software. Earlier this week, GE Vernova announced plans to acquire France-based AI tools startup Alteia. 'With this acquisition, we are buying an existing partner that uses AI and visualization technologies to help our customers manage and orchestrate the grid,' Strazik said during the earnings call, referring to the move as 'another important step forward for our electrification software business.' GE Vernova is third-best performer in the S&P 500 (^GSPC), up roughly 85% year to date, and ranks sixth among components in the Industrial Sector ETF (XLI), which has led the broader market this year.
