A look inside the collections at Santa Fe's Indigenous fashion week

Fast Company12-05-2025
Fashion designers from across North America are bringing together inspiration from their Indigenous heritage, culture and everyday lives to three days of runway modeling that started Friday in a leading creative hub and marketplace for Indigenous art.
A fashion show affiliated with the century-old Santa Fe Indian Market is collaborating this year with a counterpart from Vancouver, Canada, in a spirit of Indigenous solidarity and artistic freedom. A second, independent runway show at a rail yard district in the city has nearly doubled the bustle of models, makeup and final fittings.
Elements of Friday's collections from six Native designers ran the gamut from silk parasols to a quilted hoodie, knee-high fur boots and suede leather earrings that dangled to the waist. Models on the Santa Fe catwalks include professionals, dancers and Indigenous celebrities from TV and the political sphere.
Clothing and accessories rely on materials ranging from of wool trade cloth to animal hides, featuring traditional beadwork, ribbons and jewelry with some contemporary twists that include digitally rendered designs and urban Native American streetwear from Phoenix.
'Native fashion, it's telling a story about our understanding of who we are individually and then within our communities,' said Taos Pueblo fashion designer Patricia Michaels, of 'Project Runway' reality TV fame. 'You're getting designers from North America that are here to express a lot of what inspires them from their own heritage and culture.'
Santa Fe style
The stand-alone spring fashion week for Indigenous design is a recent outgrowth of haute couture at the summer Santa Fe Indian Market, where teeming crowds flock to outdoor displays by individual sculptors, potters, jewelers and painters.
Designer Sage Mountainflower remembers playing in the streets at Indian Market as a child in the 1980s while her artist parents sold paintings and beadwork. She forged a different career in environmental administration, but the world of high fashion called to her as she sewed tribal regalia for her children at home and, eventually, brought international recognition.
At age 50, Mountainflower on Friday presented her 'Taandi' collection — the Tewa word for 'Spring' — grounded in satin and chiffon fabric that includes embroidery patterns that invoke her personal and family heritage at the Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo in the Upper Rio Grande Valley.
'I pay attention to trends, but a lot of it's just what I like,' said Mountainflower, who also traces her heritage to Taos Pueblo and the Navajo Nation. 'This year it's actually just looking at springtime and how it's evolving. … It's going to be a colorful collection.'
More than 20 designers are presenting at the invitation of the Southwestern Association for Indian Arts.
Fashion plays a prominent part in Santa Fe's renowned arts ecosystem, with Native American vendors each day selling jewelry in the central plaza, while the Institute for American Indian Arts delivers fashion-related college degrees in May.
This week, a gala at the New Mexico governor's mansion welcomed fashion designers to town, along with social mixers at local galleries and bookstores and plans for pop-up fashion stores to sell clothes fresh off the fashion runway.
International vision
A full-scale collaboration with Vancouver Indigenous Fashion Week is bringing a northern, First Nations flair to the gathering this year with many designers crossing into the U.S. from Canada.
Secwépemc artist and fashion designer Randi Nelson traveled to Santa Fe from the city of Whitehorse in the Canadian Yukon to present collections forged from fur and traditionally cured hides — she uses primarily elk and caribou. The leather is tanned by hand without chemicals using inherited techniques and tools.
'We're all so different,' said Nelson, a member of the Bonaparte/St'uxwtéws First Nation who started her career in jewelry assembled from quills, shells and beads. 'There's not one pan-Indigenous theme or pan-Indigenous look. We're all taking from our individual nations, our individual teachings, the things from our family, but then also recreating them in a new and modern way.'
April Allen, an Inuk designer from the Nunatsiavut community on the Labrador coast of Canada, presented a mesh dress of blue water droplets. Her work delves into themes of nature and social advocacy for access to clean drinking water.
Vocal music accompanied the collection — layers of wordless, primal sound from musician and runway model Beatrice Deer, who is Inuit and Mohawk.
Urban Indian couture
Phoenix-based jeweler and designer Jeremy Donavan Arviso said the runway shows in Santa Fe are attempting to break out of the strictly Southwest fashion mold and become a global venue for Native design and collaboration. A panel discussion Thursday dwelled on the threat of new tariffs and prices for fashion supplies — and tensions between disposable fast fashion and Indigenous ideals.
Arviso is bringing a street-smart aesthetic to two shows at the Southwestern Association for Indian Arts runway and a warehouse venue organized by Amber-Dawn Bear Robe, from the Siksika Nation.
'My work is definitely contemporary, I don't choose a whole lot of ceremonial or ancestral practices in my work,' said Arviso, who is Diné, Hopi, Akimel O'odham and Tohono O'odham, and grew up in Phoenix. 'I didn't grow up like that. … I grew up on the streets.'
Arviso said his approach to fashion resembles music sampling by early rap musicians as he draws on themes from major fashion brands and elements of his own tribal cultures. He invited Toronto-based ballet dancer Madison Noon for a 'beautiful and biting' performance to introduce his collection titled Vision Quest.
Santa Fe runway models will include former U.S. Interior Secretary Deb Haaland of Laguna Pueblo, adorned with clothing from Michaels and jewelry by Zuni Pueblo silversmith Veronica Poblano.

Nine Inch Nails Revisits the '80s, and 9 More New Songs

Every Friday, pop critics for The New York Times weigh in on the week's most notable new tracks. Listen to the Playlist on Spotify here (or find our profile: nytimes) and at Apple Music here, and sign up for The Amplifier, a twice-weekly guide to new and old songs. Nine Inch Nails: 'As Alive as You Need Me to Be' 'As Alive as You Need to Be' explains why Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross reclaimed the Nine Inch Nails name for their latest film score, 'Tron: Ares.' It's a complete song and a return to the buzz-bomb synthesizers, stomping march beat, stereo ricochets and gut-wrenching vocals of the band's heyday — quite suitable, in its late-1980s impact, for the latest sequel to 'Tron,' the 1982 movie based on the videogame. The refrain might be a breakthrough for an artificial intelligence: 'I can finally feel.' FKA twigs: 'Perfectly' FKA twigs is still in dance-club mode for this track from 'Deluxua,' the expanded version of her 'Eusexua' album released in January. She chases euphoria — 'Inside my head I have the best time' — over a transparent but insistent house beat topped with ghostly keyboards. Singing delicately but not hesitantly, she's melting into the moment. Olivia Dean: 'Lady Lady' On 'Lady Lady,' the English pop-soul songwriter Olivia Dean faces change with a little nostalgia and a little hope. 'She's always changing me without a word,' Dean sings, adding, 'I was just getting used to her.' Sumptuous keyboards and gently encouraging backup vocals tip the balance toward optimism: 'Now we know that dream ain't coming true / There's room for something new.' Hermanos Gutiérrez featuring Leon Bridges: 'Elegantly Wasted' It's just a guess, but perhaps Leon Bridges was listening to the lilt of a minor-key bolero when he came up with the phrase 'elegantly wasted' and built a bolero-meets-soul song around it. The rhythm of that refrain meshes with the guitars and rhythm section of Hermanos Gutiérrez — usually an instrumental band, but now supplying backup vocals — while Bridges steers the song toward physical longing: 'Show me how to taste it,' he pleads. Amanda Shires: 'A Way It Goes' Retro sounds conjure bitter memories on Amanda Shires's 'A Way It Goes.' A hollow version of a girl-group beat, a distant surf-guitar twang and hovering strings are the backdrop as Shires recalls a shattering heartbreak: She was divorced from the songwriter Jason Isbell in March after a 10-year marriage. 'I could tell you I felt like I was dying / Hugged my knees to my chest crying, I couldn't stop,' she sings. But while the pain is still vivid, so is her determination to leave it behind — to find herself, a year later, 'flying happily ever after the aftermath.' Jeff Tweedy: 'Out in the Dark' 'Where do we stop? Where do we start?' Jeff Tweedy asks in 'Out in the Dark,' a song about the mysterious nature of creativity from a triple album, 'Twilight Override,' arriving in September. There are echoes of Bob Dylan's 'John Wesley Harding' album in Tweedy's calmly strummed acoustic guitar and the understated drums (by his son Spencer Tweedy). But like Tweedy's main band, Wilco, the production lets other sounds sneak in to transform things. Robert Plant and Saving Grace: 'Everybody's Song' Robert Plant has been making music with Saving Grace, his current band, since they gathered in England during the pandemic. The debut album they'll release in September is expected to include songs from sources as disparate as Memphis Minnie, Blind Willie Johnson and Moby Grape, along with this track from the indie-rock duo Low, 'Everybody's Song.' Plant and his band heard through the guitar noise of the original version to its kinship with the North African modal drones he loves, and they changed the beat to triple time. But they held on to the drama in the choruses, as Plant and the singer Suzi Dian harmonize on 'Breaking everybody's heart / Tearing everyone apart.' Sheryl Crow: 'The New Normal' Over a brawny, swinging riff, Sheryl Crow lambastes lies, the president, algorithms, artificial intelligence and more in 'The New Normal.' Her band, the Real Lowdown, bristles with spy-movie guitar lines as Crow assesses America in 2025: 'If the news is fake and fear is hate and nothing's immoral / To the leader of the free world — then welcome to the new normal.' Water from Your Eyes: 'Playing Classics' Water from Your Eyes — the genre-twisting duo of Nate Amos and Rachel Brown — offers some decidedly skewed disco in 'Playing Classics.' High-hat offbeats provide the disco through-line, but gnarled little riffs from guitar and keyboards rarely land where expected — at least not for long. Meanwhile, Brown deadpans thoughts like, 'Take that long hard road from here to the truth.' Sam Prekop: 'Light Shadow' Sam Prekop, the Chicago musician who sings and plays guitar in the band the Sea and Cake, has devoted most of his solo albums to instrumental pieces for modular synthesizers. 'Light Shadow,' from an album due in September, has a one-chord foundation and a restless, metronomic pulse, but Prekop layers on an ever-shifting array of keyboard patterns, emergent melodies and textural shifts. His minimalism spills over with ideas. Blood Orange featuring Caroline Polachek, Lorde and Mustafa: 'Mind Loaded' Here's an ultra-moody indie-star collaboration that pretends to transparency but must have been a recording feat. Blood Orange — the songwriter Dev Hynes — sets up a chord progression and brings in guests to, as the song says, 'help me on my way.' They oblige, harmonizing with him or singing 'Everything means nothing to me' — is that Lorde? — and reappearing when a mechanical trap beat arrives partway through. It's as short as a pop song but far more mutable, and deliberately inconclusive.

Nicki Minaj Brings Drake & Beyoncé Into Her Spat With SZA: ‘None of Us Wanted to Sing Those S–t Lyrics'

Nicki Minaj is involving two other superstars into her social media spat with SZA: Drake and Beyoncé. In her latest post dissing the R&B singer-songwriter, the Queen of Rap claimed Thursday (July 17) that Drizzy initially wanted her, not SZA, to be featured on his hit 'Rich Baby Daddy,' before alleging that Bey was reluctant to sing the 'Kill Bill' artist's 's–t lyrics' on 2015's 'Feeling Myself.' 'I wonder if she know I turned down being on the 'shake dat a– for drake' song,' Minaj began, referencing Drake's 2023 collaboration with SZA and Sexyy Red. 'I said I want to wait for [Pink Friday 2] for me & him to do a dricki song so it felt more special. And now that silly goose still out here shaking dat a– for drake every day.' Minaj went on to claim that SZA 'has been trying to tell the world she wrote for Beyonce every other other business day,' referring to the R&B hitmaker's co-writing credit on the New York native and Bey's decade-old joint effort. Earlier in their back-and-forth, SZA had claimed that Minaj previously asked to collaborate with her 'twice to no response' before teasing, 'In addition to rapping my lyrics on feeling myself 'Cooking up the bass looking like a kilo'?' 'I remember me & Beyonce was going back & forth on the phone about that part of the song,' Minaj wrote Thursday. 'Bey was like you sing it, I was like NOOOOO you sing it, she was like noooooo you sing it, I was like PLEASE!!!!! I can't sing! … none of us wanted to sing those s–t lyrics.' Billboard has reached out to reps for SZA, Drake and Beyoncé for comment. The rapper's latest post comes a couple of days after she first started lobbing insults at SZA on Tuesday (July 15). It all started with Minaj posting about her issues with the One of Them Days actress' former manager, Terrence 'Punch' Howard, after which SZA posted on X, 'Mercury retrograde .. don't take the bait lol silly goose' — which Minaj took to be a subtweet aimed at her. Minaj has since fired off a number of posts dissing SZA, calling her opponent 'ugly' and a 'liar,' repeatedly making fun of her for wearing 'fake freckles' and writing, 'B—h looking & sounding like she got stung by a f–king bee.' SZA, on the other hand, has not directly responded to Minaj more than a couple of times. When the latter first started posting messages about her, the former wrote, 'I don't give a f–k bout none of that weird s–t you popping.' Later, SZA responded to Minaj calling her a 's–t girl's girl' with a screenshot of the rapper allegedly asking to collaborate with the singer, writing, 'Nicki … You absolutely know my music and what I contribute cause you've asked for features twice to no response.' Of SZA's reply, Minaj added in her post about Drake and Beyoncé, 'Took the Btch 2 days to be coached on what to say & do next. These btchs have no identity, can't thing off the top of their heads if you paid them to.'
