Global interconnectedness under strain amid rising geopolitical tensions, says Anwar

The Star16-06-2025
KUALA LUMPUR: Global interconnectedness is under strain due to rising uncertainties, eroding the predictability, reliability and stability of existing global trade and economic systems, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Speaking at the Energy Asia 2025 on Monday (June 16), he said geopolitical tensions, retaliatory tariffs and disrupted supply chains have shaken the foundations of these systems, with the fragility most evident in the energy and climate sectors.
"Rather than fostering collaboration, we are witnessing polarising policy shifts driven by strategic competition, even as energy security remains out of reach for many,' he said in his keynote address at the Energy Asia 2025 opening ceremony here today.
Elaborating on the equitable energy transition for Asia, he said the region must determine and articulate a clear and coherent financial architecture that inspires investor confidence and mobilises greater capital flows into renewable energy projects.
"This is critical, given that in 2023, South-East Asia attracted only two per cent of global clean energy spending, a stark contrast for a region endowed with immense potential in renewable energy,' he added.
Zooming in on Malaysia, Anwar said that Malaysia is working to address the gap in the renewable sector through policies such as the Corporate Renewable Energy Supply Scheme (CRESS), which allows companies to procure clean energy via the national grid under a third-party access model.
"Efforts are also underway to incentivise green investment through mechanisms such as the Green Technology Financing Scheme, he added.
Touching on the critical pillar that advancing energy transition lies in upgrading electricity grids, Anwar affirmed that Asean has taken a significant step by accelerating the Asean Power Grid (APG) initiative through an enhanced memorandum of agreement and the establishment of a dedicated APG financing facility network.
"This will enhance cross-border funding flows and bring us closer to a truly integrated regional energy market,' he said. - Bernama

Trump set to announce tariff rate for Malaysia tomorrow, says Anwar

Anwar announced that it was decided via a phone conversation with Trump at 6.50am. – Bernama photo KUALA LUMPUR (July 31): United States (US) President Donald Trump will announce the new tariff rate to be imposed on Malaysia latest by tomorrow, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said. Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, announced that it was decided via a phone conversation with Trump at 6.50am. 'We are also discussing the tariff issue on the spirit and principle of free trade. This also applies to the series of negotiations involving the Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry (MITI) with the US Trade Representative and Secretary of Commerce. 'We hope that (the tariff decision) will not burden our nation's economy,' he said in his 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) speech in Parliament today. The US is scheduled to impose a 25 per cent import tariff on all Malaysian goods starting Aug 1, 2025. Anwar said Trump also expressed his gratitude to Malaysia for playing an effective and outstanding role to resolve the Thailand-Cambodia conflict. 'In my response, I said this was due to the Asean consensus and the positive attitude of both countries as well as the cooperation shown by the US, especially Trump, and (China's President) Xi Jinping,' he said. He said the US President also confirmed his attendance at the 47th Asean Summit to be held in Kuala Lumpur in October. Meanwhile, MITI Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz said Malaysia is waiting for Trump's official reply tomorrow. 'After that, a joint statement will be issued by the Office of the USTR and MITI to elaborate on the matters agreed on,' he said in a post on social media platform X today. Tengku Zafrul posted this after receiving a call from US Trade Representative Ambassador Jamieson Greer immediately after Greer briefed Trump on the issue. – Bernama 13MP Anwar Ibrahim asean Thailand-Cambodia conflict US tariff

13MP: Malaysia to establish national housing agency and rent-to-own scheme

KUALA LUMPUR: The government will establish a national single housing agency and introduce a rent-to-own (RTO) model as part of major housing reforms under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP). These measures aim to improve access to affordable housing and ease the cost of living for Malaysians. The Ministry of Economy outlined these reforms in the newly released 13MP document, highlighting housing as a key priority for public well-being. The plan focuses on increasing sustainable housing supply, expanding financing options, and improving regulatory efficiency. 'A national single housing agency will be established through the rationalisation of existing federal housing agencies, to plan, coordinate and manage the delivery of affordable housing,' the document stated. Additionally, a new RTO model will offer a more flexible path to homeownership, while a housing consortium may be formed to manage the scheme sustainably. The 13MP outlines three core strategies: boosting quality and inclusive housing supply, increasing homeownership among targeted groups, and improving regulatory effectiveness. Housing planning will be enhanced through governance restructuring, efficient construction methods, and better resource use. Financing schemes will also be adjusted, including tiered interest rates, to help first-time buyers. To address Malaysia's ageing population, a long-term financing or rental scheme for senior citizens will be introduced. A Residential Tenancy Act is also proposed to protect tenants and homeowners fairly. As of March 2025, 179,769 affordable homes have been completed—36% of the 500,000-unit target under the 12MP. Another 312,591 units are under construction. Under the Housing Credit Guarantee Scheme, RM17.86 billion in loans have been approved, benefiting 76,664 borrowers. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim reiterated the government's commitment to building one million affordable homes between 2026 and 2035, in collaboration with federal, state, and private sectors. The People's Housing Programme (PPR) was rebranded as Residensi Rakyat Programme (PRR) in August 2024, improving design and sustainability features. A maintenance programme for low- and medium-cost stratified housing has also benefited 150,218 residents across 46,365 units. - Bernama
