London City Lionesses provide goalkeeper updates

The Pride provided updates via posts on their official club X account earlier today.
It has been reported that youngster Hermoine Cull has joined FA Women's National League Southern Premier Division club Watford on loan. The 20-year-old will spend the remainder of the season with The Golden Girls as she looks to get some games under her belt. Cull's latest appearance for London City Lionesses came as a substitute in a 5-2 victory over Portsmouth in the Subway Women's League Cup before Christmas.
In other news, London City Lionesses have parted company with Republic of Ireland international keeper Grace Moloney by mutual consent. Moloney has spent the last 18 months with The Pride in which she has made 21 appearances for the club in the Barclays Women's Championship.
Despite the two outgoings, London City Lionesses still have a strong goalkeeping department. The Pride have Emily Orman, Sophie Hillyerd and loanee Sophia Poor on their books. Orman has largely played the role of first-choice goalkeeper at Hayes Lane this season with the player starting the vast majority of matches.

Brighton Stand Firm as Newcastle Pursue £70m Forward

Newcastle's Brazilian Pursuit: Pedro at the Heart of Summer Chase Pedro's Rising Stock and Howe's Forward Focus Brighton have rejected offers worth over £50 million for Joao Pedro from Newcastle United and one other Premier League club, as first reported by talkSPORT. Eddie Howe, unwavering in his ambition, has identified Pedro as his primary attacking target and Newcastle are expected to return with an improved bid. Advertisement Pedro's potential arrival on Tyneside would mark a significant move for the Magpies, both strategically and symbolically. The 23-year-old's adaptability across the front line — able to play as a striker, No.10 or on either flank — fits seamlessly with Howe's vision. 'Pedro is believed to have expressed a desire to leave the Amex this summer and Howe has been a long-term admirer of the forward, who is rated at £70m by Brighton.' With Chelsea also in the frame, it is clear the race for the Brazilian international is heating up fast. Photo IMAGO Impressive Return at Brighton Pedro has delivered an exceptional debut campaign since his £30 million switch from Watford in May 2023, a club-record deal for Brighton. He registered 20 goals in 40 matches across all competitions — a healthy return that justifies Brighton's valuation. Advertisement Of those, ten came in the Premier League, with the remainder split between the FA Cup and Europa League. It's a statistic that not only showcases his finishing ability but also highlights his capacity to perform across competitions and under different pressures. As Newcastle search for a consistent attacking threat to complement Alexander Isak, Pedro offers both depth and dynamism. Discipline and Determination in Focus Yet Pedro's season wasn't without turbulence. 'During a clash against Brentford in December, Pedro avoided a red card despite attempting to elbow an opponent.' The moment revealed a volatile edge to his character, although VAR intervention kept him on the pitch. His frustrations continued in April, when he was handed a three-match ban after lashing out at Brentford's Nathan Collins. Further controversy came when he missed the final two matches of the season due to a training ground spat with Jan Paul van Hecke. 'With Joao we had a small issue in training, a type which isn't uncommon from time to time in all football clubs,' confirmed Brighton head coach Fabian Hurzeler. While Hurzeler insisted the matter had been resolved internally, questions remain about Pedro's temperament under pressure. Brazilian Brotherhood on Tyneside Should Pedro join Newcastle, he would become the club's third Brazilian star alongside Joelinton and Bruno Guimaraes. The chemistry between those players could be crucial in bedding Pedro into the squad and maintaining morale. With Newcastle also preparing for European football, depth in quality and character will be vital. Advertisement This transfer saga may still have twists ahead. Brighton know they hold a strong negotiating hand with three years left on Pedro's contract and interest from multiple clubs. But Newcastle's intent appears genuine and unwavering. If they meet the Seagulls' valuation, Pedro could well be donning black and white stripes before pre-season concludes. Our View – EPL Index Analysis There's a growing sense of anticipation on Tyneside. Joao Pedro is the kind of versatile, energetic forward this team has lacked when key players have been sidelined. His ability to operate anywhere across the front three gives Eddie Howe new options, particularly in tight matches where tactical flexibility is everything. Yes, the price tag is steep at £70 million, but Brighton paid £30 million and have doubled his value in just one season. That sort of leap tells you all you need to know about Pedro's development. The numbers speak loudly: 20 goals in 40 games is a top-tier return in English football, especially for a player adjusting to a new system and higher expectations. Advertisement There are concerns about temperament, of course. The incident with Brentford and the fallout with a teammate won't have gone unnoticed by Newcastle's hierarchy. But if the club can harness that fire and turn it into drive on the pitch, Pedro could thrive in the cauldron of St James' Park. With Joelinton and Bruno already flying the Brazilian flag in the North East, Pedro would be walking into a dressing room where he'd be welcomed and understood. We say go for it — and go big.

Watford aiming to continue impressive opening day record

The start of the new season may still be six weeks away but the publication of Watford's fixtures means fans can now start planning for the campaign ahead – although it's wise not to finalise anything just yet until the TV selections have been announced. One game where arrangements can safely be made though, is for the first game of the new Championship campaign when the Hornets will travel to Charlton Athletic on Saturday, August 9. Advertisement Mileta Rajovic celebrates his late winner at Millwall last season to continue Watford's impressive run of opening-day results. (Image: PA) It will mean a morning trip south of the Thames for away fans after Sky Sports decided the prospect of a new Watford head coach coming up against a newly-promoted club in the opening game was attractive enough for live broadcast in one of the 12.30pm kick-off slots. Paulo Pezzolano will, of course, be aiming to start his Vicarage Road tenure with three points but the visitors will also be seeking to extend an impressive record on the opening day of the season. As we reported when the fixtures were published, the Hornets have won their last five matches on the first day. Look back further though, and Watford's record is only one defeat in the last 18 opening day fixtures they've played. Supporters could have been forgiven for fearing the worse when Aidy Boothroyd's side headed to Molineux for the start of the 2007/08 campaign as the Hornets had lost their previous seven opening-day matches. Advertisement It looked like those fears were well founded when Wolves took the lead and remained in front until three minutes from time when Jordan Stewart equalised before Marlon King scored a late winner from the penalty spot. Danny Graham scored twice in the victory at Carrow Road where Troy Deeney made his Watford debut (Image: Action Images) Draws followed in the opening game of the next two seasons - 0-0 at Crystal Palace and 1-1 at home to Doncaster Rovers – before Watford kicked off 2010/11 with a memorable 3-2 triumph at Norwich City thanks to a John Eustace goal and a brace from Danny Graham. That victory also saw a new signing come on in the second half to make his debut for the visitors. Troy Deeney was also a second-half substitute on the opening day of the following season when the Hornets led 2-0 at Burnley through goals from Craig Forsyth and Mark Yeates, only to be pegged back to a 2-2 draw. Fast forward 12 months and Watford had new owners, the Pozzo era getting underway with another memorable 3-2 away triumph, this time at Selhurst Park when Gianfranco Zola's new-look Hornets were heading for defeat against Crystal Palace until Almen Abdi and Matej Vydra dramatically turned the game late on. Advertisement Matej Vydra's late winner ensured Watford made a winning start to the Pozzo era in the league (Image: Action Images) Deeney delivered at his boyhood club on the opening day of 2013/14, securing a 1-0 victory at Birmingham City, and was on target again a year later – along with Vydra and Fernando Forestieri – as Bolton Wanderers were seen off 3-0 at Vicarage Road at the start of a season that would end with promotion to the Premier League. Watford's return to the big time started with a 2-2 draw at Everton – Miguel Layun and Odion Igahlo twice putting the visitors in front at Goodison Park, only for the hosts to equalise for a second time in the 86th minute. The next two seasons also started with draws – 1-1 at Southampton and an action-packed 3-3 stalemate against Liverpool at Vicarage Road – before a Roberto Pereyra double fired the Hornets to a 2-0 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion on the first day of the 2018/19 campaign. Mileta Rajovic grabbed a dramatic opening-day success for the Hornets last season (Image: PA) The Seagulls again visited Vicarage Road at the start of the following season, but the tables were turned as they won 3-0 to end their opponents' 12-year unbeaten record on the opening day. Advertisement The current five-year winning sequence began in the Championship in 2020/21 with a 1-0 home win over Middlesbrough, but Watford were back in the Premier League a year later and started the season with another exciting 3-2 opening-day win – this time against Aston Villa at Vicarage Road. It has been the Championship ever since for the Hornets but each season has started with three points – 1-0 at home to Sheffield United in 2022/23, the emphatic 4-0 victory over QPR 12 months later before Mileta Rajovic's late winner secured Watford's latest 3-2 opening-day triumph, this time at Millwall.

London City Lionesses set to sign defender Poppy Pattinson after Brighton exit

London City Lionesses are set to complete the signing of left-back Poppy Pattinson on a free transfer from Brighton and Hove Albion. It was announced in May that Pattinson, 25, would be departing Brighton when her contract expires this summer. The former England youth international had offers from elsewhere in the Women's Super League, including from Everton, but has opted to join the newly-promoted London City ahead of their debut season in the top flight. London City won promotion to the WSL on the final day of the 2024-25 campaign following a summer of significant investment under the ownership of Michele Kang. U.S. business woman Kang completed the takeover of London City in February 2024, with Sweden international Kosovare Asllani and forward Izzy Goodwin, the Championship's top scorer from the 2023-24 campaign, among their statement signings last summer. They have already completed the addition of former Arsenal midfielder Danielle van de Donk following the expiration of her Lyon contract this summer as they prepare for their first season in the top flight. Pattinson made 18 WSL appearances for Brighton last term as the club finished fifth. She joined Brighton from Everton in 2022, having previously had spells at Bristol City, Manchester City and Sunderland.
