Meta acquires voice AI startup PlayAI as it continues to add talent
Meta has made AI the company's top priority this year, investing heavily in infrastructure such as chips and data centers, as well as recruiting top talent to build AI models and features Bloomberg Meta Platforms Inc. has completed a deal to acquire PlayAI, a small artificial intelligence startup focused on voice technology. The 'entire PlayAI team' is set to join Meta next week, according to an internal memo that was reviewed by Bloomberg. The PlayAI group will report to Johan Schalkwyk, who recently joined Meta from a separate voice AI startup called Sesame AI Inc. Bloomberg News previously reported that the companies were discussing the acquisition. Meta has made AI the company's top priority this year, investing heavily in infrastructure such as chips and data centers, as well as recruiting top talent to build AI models and features. Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg recently announced a major restructuring of the company's AI division, putting former Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang in charge of the new group, which is named Meta Superintelligence Labs. Financial terms of the purchase weren't disclosed. A Meta spokesperson confirmed the acquisition, but declined further comment. The PlayAI team's 'work in creating natural voices, along with a platform for easy voice creation, is a great match for our work and road map, across AI Characters, Meta AI, Wearables and audio content creation,' according to the memo.

Wall Street Week Ahead: Earnings, inflation data confront resilient US stocks rally
A rally that has taken U.S. stocks to record highs will be tested in the coming week by the kick-off of corporate earnings season and a key inflation report as investors hope to learn more about the economic fallout from tariffs. The S&P 500 is little changed so far this week, but the benchmark stock index has surged 26% since April to all-time high levels. Stocks this week largely shrugged off President Donald Trump's threats of more aggressive tariffs on over 20 countries set to take effect August 1. Trump also announced plans for higher levies on copper, pharmaceuticals and semiconductors. "Investors are looking toward the end of the year into next year where fundamentals are better, and they are willing to look through some short-term uncertainty as they get there," said Chris Fasciano, chief market strategist at Commonwealth Financial Network. After a strong first-quarter reporting season helped lift stocks, analyst estimates for second-quarter results have weakened. S&P 500 companies are expected to have increased profits by 5.8% from the year-earlier period, down from an expectation of a 10.2% gain on April 1, according to LSEG IBES. Live Events The percentage of S&P 500 companies beating consensus estimates rose to 78% in the first quarter after the rate had declined the prior three quarters, Ned Davis Research analysts said. "Another reading in the upper 70s would suggest that companies have a grasp not only on tariffs, but also on the broader macro environment," the Ned Davis analysts said in a note. Reports from banks will dominate the week, including results from JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America and Goldman Sachs. The impact of tariffs will also be at issue with the consumer price index for June, due on Tuesday, which will shed light on inflation trends. CPI is expected to increase 0.3% on a monthly basis, an acceleration from the prior month, according to economists polled by Reuters. A busy week of economic data will also be highlighted by monthly retail sales on Thursday. Investors are eager for the Federal Reserve to resume interest rate cuts, but central bank officials have cited worries that tariffs will drive inflation higher as reasons for holding off on changing monetary policy. The S&P 500 is up nearly 7% in 2025, just over halfway through the year. In the latest sign of positive stock momentum, Nvidia Corp this week became the first publicly traded company to hit $4 trillion in market value, fueled by a massive run for AI chipmaker's stock price. Stocks have rebounded after plunging in April following Trump's "Liberation Day" announcement of sweeping global tariffs. This past Wednesday was expected to be a key deadline, marking the end of Trump's pause on many of the harsh "reciprocal" tariffs he unveiled in April. This week, he launched an array of levies, many scheduled to take effect on August 1. Still, most investors appear to be banking on the U.S. avoiding higher tariff rates as Washington strikes deals in coming weeks with trading partners such as Japan and South Korea, said Anthony Saglimbene, chief market strategist at Ameriprise Financial. "That's what the market has built in," Saglimbene said. "If we don't get that, then I think there is probably some risk that we would see some higher near-term volatility if the White House actually implements some of these aggressive tariff measures."

Karen Hao's Empire of AI brings nuance and much-needed scepticism to the study of AI
Most conversations that we have around Artificial Intelligence (AI) today share one commonality: the technology's society-altering capacity, its ability to leap us towards the next breakthrough, a better world, a future that we rarely imagined would be possible. The founding mission of Open AI, the company that made AI a household name through ChatGPT in 2022, is 'to ensure that artificial general intelligence — AI systems that are generally smarter than humans — benefits all of humanity'. Behind this seemingly optimistic idea, tech reporter Karen Hao argues, is the stench of empires of old — a civilising mission that promises modernity and progress while accumulating power and money through the exploitation of labour and resources. Hao has spent seven years covering AI — at the MIT Tech Review, The Washington Post and The Atlantic. She was the first to profile OpenAI and extensively document the AI supply chain — taking the conversation beyond the promise of Silicon Valley's innovation through reportage around people behind the black boxes that are AI models. And it is these stories that find centre-stage in 'Empire of AI: Dreams and Nightmares in Sam Altman's OpenAI', her debut book. It is a company book and, like all good business books, gives an intimate picture of the rise of an idea, the people, strategy and money behind it. But the book stands out as it provides us one way of framing the dizzying AI boom and conversation around us. In doing so, the book joins the list of non-fiction on AI that brings nuance and much-needed scepticism of the subject while being acutely aware of its potential. In 2024, Arvind Narayanan and Sayash Kapoor from the Computer Science department of Princeton University wrote 'AI Snake Oil: What Artificial Intelligence Can Do, What It Can't, and How to Tell the Difference'. The book lays out the basics of AI research, helping distinguish hype from reality. The same year, tech journalist Parmy Olson wrote Supremacy: AI, ChatGPT, and the Race that Will Change the World about the unprecedented monopoly that Open AI and Google's AI research wing Deepmind currently have in the world. This approach needs a lot of computing capacity. The physical manifestation of it are the massive data centres that are mushrooming everywhere. These data centres, in turn, consume a lot of energy. Open AI cracked this technique and doubled down on it: more data, more high-functioning and expensive Graphic Processing Units (GPUs) that make the computation happen, and more data centers to house them. This more-is-more approach, Hao writes, has 'choked' alternative forms to AI research, which has been a subject many have been trying to crack and expand since the 1950s. 'There was research before that explored minimising data for training models while achieving similar gains. Then Large Language Models and ChatGPT entered the picture. Research suddenly stopped. Two things happened: money flowed into transformers (a type of highly-effective neural network) and generative AI, diverting funding from other explorations,' Hao says. With the 'enormous externalities' of environmental costs, data privacy issues and labour exploitation of AI today, it is important to 'redirect some funds to explore new scientific frontiers that offer the same benefits of advanced AI without extraordinary costs,' Hao argues. But it might be harder than said. In her book, Hao traces how researchers, who were working outside major AI companies, are now financially affiliated with them. Funding, too, primarily, comes from tech companies or academic labs associated with them. 'There's a misconception among the public and policymakers that AI research remains guided by a pure scientific drive,' Hao says, adding that 'the foundations of AI knowledge have been overtaken by profit motives.'
