Mumbai: Shares of cement companies have seen renewed buying interest in the past few weeks following a rise in prices, expectations of strong first quarter results despite the onset of monsoons, and an expected FY26 rebound from circumspect sales last year.Analysts said that even on the technical charts, some stocks indicate a breakout.Companies such as UltraTech Cement JK Cement and Shree Cement have advanced 5-11% in the past one month, recouping some of the losses made in the previous year. The benchmarks Nifty 50 and Nifty 500 have gained 1.8% and 1.7% in this period, respectively. Cement price hikes taken in June have sustained for the first time in a while, and coupled with reduced cash discounts, have kept net realisations for the companies stable through the first quarter," said Manish Valecha, research analyst at Anand Rathi Institutional Equities. "A low-base effect from last year, when growth slowed to 3-4% due to elections, is also expected to boost this year's growth to 7-8%, starting from Q1."Valecha also said that pet coke prices have remained stable, helping keep input costs in check. Petroleum coke, or pet coke is used as a fuel in the production process.Sham Chandak, head of institutional equities at Elios Financial Services, said current Indian demand for cement is 440 million tonnes per annum (mtpa), which is likely to grow to 620 mtpa by 2030."After a benign couple of quarters, average cement prices rose by 8% year-on-year in Q1FY26, reaching ₹360 per bag. Declining input costs (especially coal and diesel) have led to margin improvements, and a sharp decline in interest rates further improves margins," he said. This increase in demand, coupled with pricing power and cost efficiency is likely to keep buyers interested in cement stocks "Cement stocks have seen a renewed buying interest in the last couple of weeks with stocks within the sector witnessing price up moves supported by rising volumes," said Ruchit Jain, vice president at Motilal Oswal Financial Services Jain said that stocks like Ultratech Cement have given a breakout from 12-months consolidation phase indicating the start of a fresh uptrend. "We expect the stock to rally towards ₹13,200 in the short term while the ₹12,300-12,200 range is expected to act as a support," he said. This indicates 5.5% upside from Friday's close.Jain also said that Ramco Cements too has been showing signs of outperformance within the sector and has a bullish set-up, it may move towards ₹1,200 in the short term. That would imply gains of almost 10% from its current price.Valecha said he expects strong first-quarter results in the sector, particularly from South-based companies."Valuations remain attractive, with large-caps offering 15-20% upside and midcaps likely to deliver 20-25% returns over the next year. We prefer UltraTech among large-caps and JK Cement in midcaps," he said.Chandak said that current valuations have priced in the near term positives, leaving little value on the table, but cement remains a good play over the 3-5 years period.

Jane Street to resume trading on NSE, BSE from Tuesday
Jane Street will be allowed to resume trading on the National Stock Exchange and BSE from Tuesday, nearly three weeks after the US hedge fund was barred from operating in India due to alleged market manipulation. The development follows an update from the Securities and Exchange Board of India late Monday clarifying that Jane Street could resume trading in the country's stock exchanges subject to stipulations laid out in its 3 July interim order, said two people aware of the matter. Jane Street entities will also be allowed to trade on the highly popular index options segment on both the exchanges provided they abide by Sebi's conditions. 'Jane Street will be allowed to trade on NSE effective Tuesday, per Sebi's directions in its interim order, which precludes them (Jane Street entities) from engaging in any manipulative trades alluded to in the order,' said one of the persons mentioned above. Sebi in its interim order barred four Jane Street entities for alleged manipulation of indices such as Bank Nifty and Nifty to make ₹ 43,289 crore on index options between January 2023 and March 2025. Sebi also directed the four Jane Street entities to 'cease and desist from directly or indirectly engaging in any fraudulent, manipulative, or unfair trade practice that may be in breach of its regulations'. In a statement issued 'Jane Street entities have confirmed that they will comply with this,' the regulator said in a press release issued on Tuesday. On 11 July, Jane Street deposited ₹ 4,843.5 crore in an escrow account to be able to resume trading in India, as directed by Sebi, although it has hired law firm Khaitan & Co. to contest the regulator's interim order. Jane Street has said that its trades were in the nature of arbitrage, exploiting price differences in the same underlying index across futures and options on Nifty and Bank Nifty. 'Not all the four entities were active on BSE, but those that were will be enabled to trade on the exchange from tomorrow (Tuesday) under the heightened monitoring surveillance stipulated by Sebi's interim order,' said the person quoted above. NSE, BSE and Sebi didn't immediately reply to Mint's queries. Shares of the listed BSE Ltd jumped almost 3% to ₹ 2,521.3 apiece on Monday before the Sebi update. NSE's unlisted shares rose 2.5-5% to ₹ 2,150-2,200, per Narinder Wadhwa, managing director at SKI Capital, who said demand for the shares had spurted. Mint had reported on 16 July that although Jane Street had met a key requirement to resume operations in Indian markets by depositing over ₹ 4,843 crore, its immediate return to trading wasn't certain amid multiple regulatory hurdles and unprecedented scrutiny. Legal experts cited in the report had said the deposit only served as a safeguard so the alleged illegal gains don't leave the Indian jurisdiction or get dissipated while the investigation continues. In a statement on 21 July, Sebi clarified that its interim order barring Jane Street from trading in the securities market shall cease to apply as the quant trading firm had deposited the alleged illegal gains in an escrow account. Sebi has also directed the stock exchanges to closely monitor any future dealings and positions of Jane Street Group to ensure it does not directly or indirectly indulge in any kind of manipulative activity. Sebi's probe into Jane Street trading is continuing with a final order expected to take months, per one of the people mentioned above.

Nayara Energy rejects EU sanctions, calls move ‘unilateral' and without legal basis
New Delhi: Nayara Energy , which accounts for 8 per cent of India's total refining capacity, has rejected the European Union's recent decision to impose sanctions on the company, calling the move 'unjust and unilateral' and asserting that it lacks legal foundation under international law. In a media statement, the company said, 'As an Indian company, we are deeply committed to supporting the nation's energy security and fostering economic growth. Our organization is governed by Indian law and proudly serves as a vital contributor to the country's energy infrastructure.' Nayara Energy operates one of India's largest refineries and has a 7 per cent share of the domestic petrol pump network. It also contributes 8 per cent of the country's polypropylene production capacity. The company said it continues to serve Indian demand and has no exposure to EU consumers. The EU's move comes as part of its broader sanctions package targeting Russia and its affiliates. Nayara, in which Russia's Rosneft holds a stake, said that the EU's action is an 'undue extension of authority' that risks disrupting energy supplies to Indian consumers and industries. 'The EU's decision lacks legal basis and threatens to undermine India's interests,' the company said, adding that the measures could affect ongoing investments and partnerships. Nayara stated that since August 2017, it has invested over ₹14,000 crore in India and plans to invest an additional ₹70,000 crore in areas including petrochemicals, ethanol plants, ESG initiatives and marketing infrastructure. The company also said it has contributed ₹2.5 lakh crore in direct and indirect taxes during the same period and reaffirmed its commitment to the country's energy goals. 'All our operations in India remain fully compliant with Indian laws and continue to function normally,' Nayara said. 'We have taken comprehensive measures to guarantee seamless continuity and stability across all business verticals.' The company further stated that it is actively exploring all legal and appropriate avenues to respond to the EU sanctions. 'Several EU countries continue to import Russian energy while taking a high moral ground by targeting an Indian entity that primarily serves domestic demand,' the statement noted. Nayara also emphasised its role in community development , citing a ₹200 crore annual CSR budget that supports education, healthcare, and infrastructure in regions near its operations. 'An Indian Company, Nayara is in India and for India – highly driven and committed to fuel the nation's growing demand for energy,' the statement said.
