ISRO shares full account of astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla's Axiom-4 space mission

BENGALURU: As the whole nation celebrates the splashdown of Group Captain and astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla on July 15 at 3:02 pm at Pacific Ocean, off California coast as part of the Axiom-4 space mission, India's Gaganyatri has been sent to medical quarantine for seven days for his physical, mental and psychological well-being.
In the meantime, ISRO, which had sent Shukla on the mission and invested Rs 550 crore on it, said that the safety and health of its astronaut was its top most priority. The ISRO team also shared a detailed account of the works Shukla had undertaken during his 21-day long space mission, of which 18 days were spent on the International Space Station.
ISRO stated that Shukla had adapted exceptionally well to the zero-gravity environment in space. Despite the physical and psychological challenges of spaceflight, he maintained optimal health throughout the mission. He also captured and shared a wide array of photographs and videos documenting his life and works during the low Earth orbit mission.
ISRO-led scientific experiments completed
Shukla completed a suite of seven microgravity experiments developed by Indian research institutions under the Human Space Flight Centre's (HSFC) coordination.
These experiments explored muscle regeneration, algal growth, crop viability, microbial survivability, cognitive performance in space, and the behaviour of cyanobacteria - each aimed at enhancing understanding of human spaceflight and microgravity science.
The experiments included- Space Microalgae (developed by ICGEB and BRIC-NIPGR, New Delhi): It assessed the growth and radiation response of edible algae; Myogenesis (developed by BRIC-InStem, Bengaluru): Under this the muscle regeneration with supplement treatment were studied; sprouting of methi and moong seeds in microgravity (developed by UAS & IIT Dharwad); life, resilience and aging pattern of tardigrade (designed by IISc, Bengaluru); cognitive testing with in-flight user interface displays of electronic displays (also designed by IISc, Bengaluru); comparative growth and proteomics of Cyanobacteria in Microgravity (developed by ICGEB, New Delhi); and Impact of microgravity on seed physiology on food crop seeds (developed by IIST and KAU, Thiruvananthapuram).

He highlighted historic milestones such as India becoming the first nation to reach Mars orbit on its maiden attempt, the record-breaking launch of 104 satellites in a single mission using PSLV-C37, and the successful soft landing on the Moon's south polar region. GITAM vice-chancellor Prof. Eroll D'Souza praised ISRO's phenomenal progress and expressed confidence that space technologies will play a crucial role in driving India's economic growth.

Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla reunited with his wife, Kamna Shukla and six-year-old son Kiash Shukla after his 18-day mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS). Kamna and Kiash are already by his side in Houston, Texas. It was the first time Shukla saw his family in two months. He wrote in an Instagram post, "It was challenging. Coming back to Earth and holding my family back in my arms felt like home." He added, "Human spaceflight missions are magical but they are made magical by the humans." He became the second Indian to travel to space after Rakesh Sharma's 1984 sojourn as part of a Soviet Russian mission. He also became the first Indian to travel to the ISS for 18 days - the longest stint. Kamna spoke about what a "wonderful" and "unexpected" surprise it was to get a call from the ISS right after docking. "Hearing his voice and knowing he was safe meant the world to me. Our conversations typically revolved around his daily activities, the unique experiments he conducted, and the extraordinary experiences he encountered, which were vastly different from life on earth. These phone calls became the highlight of my day through 18 days," she told PTI. The couple got married in 2009 after having known each other since Class 3. Both of them attended Lucknow's City Montessori School. Next up, Shukla has already been linked to the Gaganyaan mission, ISRO's first crewed spaceflight slated for 2027.

Hyd startups Veera Dynamics, Binford Labs co-develop India's first stealth drones for armed forces

HYDERABAD: Veera Dynamics, a Hyderabad-based defence tech startup that has developed a next-gen stealth material called RAMA (Radar Absorption & Multispectral Adaptive), has now teamed up with Hyderabad-based Binford Research Labs to develop India's first stealth drone. RAMA, which uses nanotechnology and can be applied as a paint or wrapping, works like Harry Potter's 'cloak of invisibility' to enhance the invisibility of military platforms like drones, manned aircraft, or naval vessels across radar and infrared spectrums to avoid detection by the enemy. It is made from a blend of two different carbon materials that enables it to absorb radar waves, converting them into heat, which is then dissipated at a rate of 1.5 degrees centigrade per second. This rapid heat dissipation, combined with the material's ability to adapt to ambient temperatures, helps the RAMA coated platform achieve thermal equilibrium, effectively reducing its radar cross-section and thermal signatures. Sai Teja Peddineni, CEO, Veera Dynamics, told TOI that the material's development was initially spurred by a problem statement from the Naval Innovation and Indigenisation Organisation (NIIO) in 2022, which wanted an infrared stealth solution. While it achieved a 97% IR signature reduction with RAMA, the project quickly evolved to address radar spectrum invisibility as well with an over 90% reduction in radar signature, he said. 'RAMA represents our vision of platform-wide invisibility. It's not just a material – it's a strategic capability for future warfare,' Peddineni added. The dual stealth drones being co-developed by the two Hyderabad startups have already been tested by the Indian armed forces during field trials post Operation Sindoor , B Sidhanth Jain, founder, Binford Research Labs, said. He said Binford is now integrating RAMA with its autonomous drones that can operate in RF- and GPS-denied environments. "Our drones, equipped with RAMA, can carry out covert, high-risk missions in contested zones, enhancing their survivability and mission adaptability as it significantly compresses the adversary's detect-to-engage window to near-zero," Jain added. Both the startups are funded by Union defence ministry's flagship iDEX (Innovations for Defence Excellence) programme, that is managed by the Defence Innovation Organisation (DIO) and were also initially supported by IIT-Hyderabad.
