LABUAN: The Labuan-Kota Kinabalu express ferry service has seen a surge in passengers since resuming operations on May 27, following a three-year suspension. To date, more than 3,700 commuters have used the direct sea route, with each trip operating at full capacity of over 100 passengers. The revival of the service, linking the duty-free island to Sabah's capital, has been hailed by federal authorities as a much-needed boost to regional connectivity. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa described the ferry's return as a key development for Labuan's socio-economic growth. 'This express ferry is not just a transportation service — it is a vital connector for regional economic, social and development networks,' she said. Speaking to reporters at the Labuan International Ferry Terminal after welcoming passengers from Kota Kinabalu, Dr Zaliha said the service facilitates community mobility, daily activities, and the transport of goods within local supply chains. She expressed satisfaction with the strong public reception, noting that the ferry is popular among a wide range of travellers commuting between the two cities. 'This route offers a more convenient and time-saving alternative to the roll-on/roll-off (Ro-Ro) ferry via Menumbok, especially for passengers without vehicles,' she said. PUTRAJAYA: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi expressed hope that Malaysia's rural development agenda can serve as a model for the Asean region. Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Rural and Regional Development Minister, said his ministry would continue to elevate the rural development agenda to the regional stage when it hosts the Asean Multi-Stakeholder Dialogue on the Asean Master Plan on Rural Development again this October. In addition, Malaysia would host the Asean+3 Forum on Empowering Rural Women and Digitalisation. Ahmad Zahid said his ministry has been given the mandate to plan rural community development, with an allocation of nearly RM12bil, of which RM3.37bil has been spent to date. He said the recently launched Desa Kirana initiative was being hailed as a game changer in the lead-up to Visit Malaysia 2026. According to him, the initiative aims to boost rural tourism and strengthen the local economy by empowering cultural heritage, natural attractions, traditional cuisine, handicrafts and a variety of rural-based activities. "I hope to one day see our rural gems - from Arau to Kudat, from Sabah's interior to the coast of Sarawak - emerge as world-class tourist destinations. Just like Lauterbrunnen in Switzerland, Hobbiton in New Zealand, Shirakawa-go in Japan, or Ubud in Bali - places that were once quiet but now stand proudly on the global tourism map," he said. Ahmad Zahid also said that his ministry would organise a three-dimensional Mega Carnival, which will bring together three major events simultaneously: the Rural Entrepreneur Carnival, Felda Settlers' Day, and the One District One Industry initiative. "This marks another major shift - a strategic effort to elevate rural entrepreneurs and strengthen the rural entrepreneurship ecosystem at both the national and international levels," he said. Meanwhile, he also called on the ministry's secretary-general, Datuk Muhd Khair Razman Mohamed Annuar, to review the existing training system. During the assembly, Ahmad Zahid expressed his appreciation for the dedication and hard work of the ministry's staff throughout his 940-day leadership of the ministry. – Bernama

Sabahan loses RM400 durian gamble at Kuala Lumpur International Airport

The man from Kota Kinabalu had bought premium durians from Penang as a gift for his parents during a recent trip home to Sabah. Despite vacuum-sealing the fruits to eliminate any odour, he was told at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport that durians are banned on aircraft regardless of packaging. The man, who has worked in Kuala Lumpur for years, said he saved money and carefully selected the durians knowing his parents' love for the fruit. He made sure the fruits were professionally vacuum-sealed in airtight containers to prevent any smell from escaping. 'I made sure everything was properly sealed with no smell coming from the package. I thought I had solved the problem,' he said. However, Customs officials at the airport informed him that durians were strictly prohibited on aircraft, with no exceptions for vacuum-sealed packaging. "This is within Malaysia, a domestic travel within our own nation. It should not be this complicated,' he said, expressing frustration at having to abandon his purchase or miss his flight. He hopes Deputy Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Chan Foong Hin, who is also from Sabah, can help review the policy. 'Chan understands what it is like to be a Sabahan working in the Peninsula,' he said. 'He knows how important it is for us to be able to bring home local specialties for our families. Lenggong rides high with global riders

The Deputy Home Minister, who is also Lenggong MP, said the Rimba Raid X Lenggong event, held for the second time, indirectly supports the Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign through international media coverage and the participation of riders from various countries. 'Rimba Raid X Lenggong features participants from Indonesia, Singapore, Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Thailand, several European countries, and the host nation, Malaysia. 'These participants indirectly serve as 'tourism ambassadors', helping to promote Malaysia as a sports tourism destination to the world,' he told Bernama after the 2025 Rimba Raid X Lenggong prize-giving ceremony here on Sunday night. Also present was Rimba Raid founder Capt Datuk Nik Huzlan Nik Hussain. The 2025 Rimba Raid X Lenggong features six racing categories, offering opportunities for participants with different types of motorcycles and varying levels of experience. The categories include Class A for multi-cylinder motorcycles over 1,000cc; Class B for multi-cylinder motorcycles between 250cc and 999cc; Class C for single-cylinder motorcycles between 250cc and 800cc; and Class D (adventure kapcai), dedicated to small-engine motorcycles modified for rugged adventure use. The remaining two are Class E for adventure scooters – a genre growing in popularity among urban riders and light adventurers – and Class F for electric motorcycles (e-bikes), reflecting advancements in technology and sustainability in motorsports. Meanwhile, Nik Huzlan said the competition results, originally scheduled to be announced on Sunday night, had to be postponed due to technical issues, and a new date will be set soon.
