13 students from government-run free coaching centre clear IIT-JEE Advance in Jharkhand
RANCHI: As many as thirteen students from government schools getting free coaching at 'State Level Akansha Programme' in Ranchi, have cleared IIT-JEE Advance this year.
After clearing JEE Advanced Examination, these students are now eligible for admission in prestigious IITs located across the country.
Despite the challenging level of the question paper this year, the success of the students of the Aakanksha program is being seen as a landmark. 'It all became possible due to the regular classes being conducted at Akansha by the best faculty available here. Students here, are made to remain in full discipline as there is no scope for diverting from their goals or bunking their classes, as a close eye is kept on them by Administrator VK Singh,' said the District Education Officer Vinay Kumar.
Only the students passing out their class 10 Board exam with Jharkhand Autonomous Council (JAC) are eligible to appear for its entrance test, he added.
'Since students are admitted here after going through a two-stage filter, firstly by the JAC and then during the entrance test conducted by Akansha, only serious students get this facility,' said the DEO.
He, however, said that he was expecting better results this time, looking at the hard work these students had been doing during the last two years, he added.
Notably, a selection test is organised by the department for the children studying in government schools in class XI across Jharkhand. Based on the selection test, 40 students are selected for both the Engineering and Medical streams.

JAC warns of stir over pay revision, promotion delay in Puducherry power department
PUDUCHERRY: The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the Puducherry Electricity Department Engineers and Employees Welfare Association has threatened a large-scale agitation on July 3 over the government's failure to address long-pending demands on pay revision and promotions. At the heart of the grievance lies the non-implementation of revised Recruitment Rules (RR) across various cadres in the department. Despite redesignation of posts, over 2,000 employees continue to be denied promotions and corresponding pay hikes, a JAC spokesperson said. Numerous posts remain vacant, while promotions due years ago are yet to materialise. A key demand is the immediate approval of salary revisions recommended under the Fifth Pay Commission for 67 posts, which were deferred following the advice of a one-member committee. Though the Seventh Central Pay Commission had advised the Puducherry government to resolve the matter administratively, no step has been taken so far, union leaders pointed out. The JAC further highlighted that revised pay scales were implemented in practice, with employees paid accordingly from revenue collected from power consumers over the past 15 years. Hence, union representatives argued that financial constraints cannot be cited as a reason for delaying formalisation of the revision. While welcoming the move to recruit 73 Junior Engineers, the committee condemned the government for proceeding with direct appointments without formally amending recruitment rules, terming it "illegal and unjust". In a meeting held on June 19, all affiliated unions resolved to besiege the offices of the Electricity Secretary and Head of Department on July 3 if their primary demand—approval of the Fifth Pay Commission recommendations—is not met within a week.

Turmeric Board will strengthen farmers financially with new markets opening: Amit Shah
Fulfilling the 40-year-old dream and the promise made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the headquarters of the National Turmeric Board in Nizamabad on Sunday (June 29). Mr. Shah said that with the establishment of the Board, within three to four years, turmeric from Nizamabad will reach most countries around the world. Farmers will no longer have to rely on middlemen as the Board will establish the entire value chain — packaging, branding, marketing and export. The Minister said turmeric is antiviral, anti-cancer, and anti-inflammatory, and is a wonder drug. Moreover, the Indian turmeric with high curcumin content is much sought after. 'Now, we've also begun GI tag certification and marketing for organic turmeric. Government of India has set a target of $1 billion in turmeric exports by 2030.' The Minister further said farmers will also be trained in best practices to meet export standards and the Board will work on skill development and training. He said in 2025, turmeric farmers received a rate of ₹ 18,000 to ₹ 19,000 per quintal. In the next three years, marketing initiatives will help farmers earn ₹6,000 to ₹7,000 more per quintal. Mr. Shah assured that along with the Turmeric Board branch offices of both Bharat Organic Cooperative Limited and Bharat Cooperative Exports Limited will be opened in Nizamabad to boost turmeric exports. Telangana Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageshwar Rao thanked the Centre for responding to the long-pending demand of farmers. Union Coal Minister G Kishan Reddy, Union MoS (Home) Bandi Sanjay Kumar, BJP MP K Laxman, BJP Lok Sabha member from Nizamabad D. Arvind and several other party leaders were present on the occasion.

Tamil Nadu commences restoration of Kariyachalli island in Gulf of Mannar to combat erosion and boost marine biodiversity
After the successful restoration of Vaan island in Gulf of Mannar Marine National Park, the Tamil Nadu government has commenced the restoration of Kariyachalli island in the Gulf of Mannar region, under the Tamil Nadu Sustainably Harnessing Ocean Resource (TNSHORE) initiative. The restoration project, being carried out at a cost of ₹50 crore, is funded by the state government and the World Bank. The Tamil Nadu Forest Department, in partnership with the IIT-Madras and Suganthi Devadason Marine Research Institute in Thoothukudi, is undertaking this ambitious initiative. The Gulf of Mannar (GoM) located on the southeastern coast of India, is one of the four major coral reef areas in India. It comprises 21 uninhabited low-lying islands within the Gulf of Mannar Marine National Park, stretching 160 km between Rameswaram and Thoothukudi. The surrounding coral reefs in these islands help to protect the mainland from coastal erosion, extreme weather, while also supporting fisherfolks by increasing the fish production. However extensive coral mining, before it was completely stopped in 2005, the most selective mined species of boulder coral were from the genera Porites and Favia, which were principal reef builders and sediment suppliers of the reef island. As a result, many islands are shrinking due to erosion and lack of sediment replenishment. In case of, Kariyachalli island, which belongs to the Thoothukudi group is located at about 4 km south of Sippikulam and 20 km northeast of Thoothukudi old harbour. According to a report from SDMRI, the total area of the island was 20.85 hectares in 1969 (Survey of India Toposheet), 16.64 hectares in 1986 during Marine National Park notification and 5.97 hectares in 2017. But at present during April 2025, it has an area cover of 3.14 hectares during the high tide level and 4.12 hectares during the low tide level. Kariyachalli island possess beaches, sand dunes, spit and sandy plains. The alarming shrinkage prompted the government to undertake restoration of Kariyachalli island. The initiative involves the deployment of 8,500 multipurpose artificial reef modules, especially designed to protect and restore the highly eroded island, to conserve and enhance biodiversity, address the impacts of climate change and sustain fishery resources. The project also includes the restoration of degraded coral reefs and seagrass beds. Interestingly the project will also engage over 300 local community members during restoration. S.A. Sannasiraj, Professor, Department of Ocean Engineering said that the layout of artificial reefs has been planned as per the island configuration and the fabrication of the artificial reef is currently underway. He added that while the deployment of the modules are similar to the 'Vaan' island project, the recovery process would be slower due to the comparatively slower rate of degradation. Whereas, the director of SDMRI J.K. Edward Patterson noted 'The island's degraded habitat such as coral reefs and seagrass beds are also being restored, which will enhance the coral and seagrass associated marine life and help protect the island from erosion.' Speaking on the initiative, Supriya Sahu, Additional Chief Secretary, Department of Environment, Climate Change and Forests said that environmental and social impact assessments and wave dynamics and bathymetry investigations have been conducted by IIT-Madras. 'The island has shrunk from 20.85 hectares to over three hectares now and the protection and restoration of island and its various ecosystems like coral reefs and seagrass beds will help not only to save the island from further erosion but also to protect the nearby coast and enhance biodiversity, which are vital to sustained livelihood of fisherfolk,' added Ms. Sahu.
