Islampur to be renamed Ishwarpur
The parliamentary affairs minister Chandrakant Patil announced the decision in the legislative council on the concluding day of the monsoon session. Patil said that the state government is set to present the proposal to the central government and that the city will be officially renamed as Ishwarpur after the approval.
'There has been a demand from the citizens of this area for many days. The state cabinet has approved the renaming of Islampur as Ishwarpur and a proposal will be sent to the central government,' he said.
NCP(SP) leader Jayant Patil, who represents Islampur in the state assembly, has not reacted to the decision yet.

With a reputation of being the Hindutva laboratory in southern India, Dakshina Kannada region has been regularly in the news for over two decades for its communally charged atmosphere and frequent flare-ups between Hindus and Muslims. This zone has been almost out of bounds for the other communities as far as electing MPs and MLAs are concerned, including in the 2023 Assembly elections where it returned BJP candidates from the majority community overwhelmingly. Of course, the 2024 Lok Sabha polls was a walkover for the saffron party as the nation still reposed faith on Narendra Modi, albeit in a derated manner. The recent controversy over the mass burial issue in Dharmasthala has uncomfortably turned the spotlight on this region again. An unnamed person has declared that he was a witness to mass burials of many women over a two-decade long period in this holy town, which has made almost all concerned to sit up and take notice. The government has understandably been cautious on proceeding in this case. Quite interestingly, this town in Belthangady taluk has a Jain administration for the centuries-old Shiva temple, known locally as Manjunatha. Even more notable is that Hindu priests go about performing puja rituals based on Vaishnavite traditions. Given that both Shaivite and Vaishnavite sects have independent temples all over India, with its followers inter-dependent as far as belief in Hindu traditions go, Dharmasthala is surely under the scanner at present. The Jain community has stressed on an independent SIT enquiry, the Home Minister of the state has affirmed that he would take a comprehensive view of the ongoing affairs, while the political parties are waiting and watching, for the moment. Already, legal recourse to the wildfire in social media circles and electronic media has been sought to be capped with a court order restraining the media from publishing defamatory content. This was after the secretary of the temple knocked on the doors of the court when it threatened to implicate the officials of the temple overseeing the administration. Even as the court gagged media channels, they have moved an appeal in the Supreme Court seeking to quash this move, as per the latest developments. Secular elements, sensing an opening, have welcomed the setting up of SIT and have asked for an impartial investigation. Noting that the FIR in this case was registered 20 days back, the progressive sections of the State have even enquired why the bodies could not have been exhumed if the claim of burying 'hundreds of bodies' was true. With the Chief Minister writing on X declaring that 'there is a possibility that unnatural deaths, murders, rapes, and other serious crimes may have occurred in this area (sic)', it seems that the Pandora's Box has just been opened, with the buzz slowly gaining momentum. Accused of being a minority-appeasing government, the Congress would like to step in, with a forceful style of its own, even as the BJP is cautiously wording its responses, awaiting further developments. Is it going to be the next dharmayudh between the two political rivals? Only time will tell.

Cong proposes panel with 40% OBC leaders
The Maharashtra Congress has proposed a new jumbo state executive committee with around 280 members, of which 40 per cent will be leaders from the Other Backward Classes (OBC). The move is perceived as an attempt by the party to attract OBC voters as the civic body polls in the state are expected to be held later this year. According to the sources within the state Congress, the new state executive committee under the leadership of recently appointed Maharashtra unit chief Harshvardhan Sapkal will be of almost 280 leaders. It will have around 110-115 general secretaries, 105-108 secretaries, five senior spokespersons, one media coordinator and treasurer each, around 15-20 senior vice-presidents and 35-40 vice presidents. It will have around 15 per cent women representation. The final list of the state executive has been sent to central leadership for final approval as the high command is still mulling over it. 'After the defeat in 2024 state Assembly polls, the party has decided to focus on OBCs. The Congress at national level too is working extensively to represent itself as a party which truly stands with the OBCs. In Maharashtra, it has been decided to give additional space to the OBC leadership,' said a senior state Congress leader, who is associated with the formation of the final list. During the Assembly 2024 elections, the Mahayuti had extensively worked on attracting OBC voters after its dismal performance in the Lok Sabha polls. The overwhelming support of OBCs to the BJP was cited as one of the key factors of defeat of Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA). With almost 40 per cent OBC leaders, the executive will have 16-17 per cent leaders from Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes, 18-19 per cent minorities and 25 – 28 per cent general category leaders. The party has also attempted to give highest representation to Vidarbha, a region where it hopes to bounce back politically due to its organisation and leadership. Almost 40 per cent of the executive committee will be composed of leaders from Vidarbha, which includes both Amaravati and Nagpur divisions. Marathwada and western Maharashtra will be the next focus, followed by Konkan. 'We need to give attention to north Maharashtra where the leaders of Mahayuti have tried to destroy the party organisation at the maximum level,' the leader said.

She said that the scheme gives power in the hands of people, as it's for the first time that people will decide what's best for them under a Govt-public participatory programme. "In total, the state government will be spending Rs 8000 crore on this programme. It will start on August 2. A Task Force will be headed by the Chief Secretary Manoj Pant, who will monitor this," said Banerjee. Counter Polarisation Accused of appeasement politics by the BJP, the TMC is now doing course correction by taking up soft Hindutva, to not upset the Muslims while appealing to the Hindu voters. Recently, Banerjee led the grand inauguration of Rs 250 crore Jagannath Dham and now, she has launched 'Durga Angan' project, a grand year-round temple complex dedicated to Ma Durga. This is being seen as a counter to the BJP invoking 'Durga' and 'Kali' in its campaign. During Martyrs' Day rally on July 21, Banerjee made her intent clear why targeting PM Modi, "Why is it that you suddenly start remembering Ma Kali and Ma Durga only during the elections? Ma Durga is our revered goddess, and Durga Puja has even received international recognition as an Intangible Cultural Heritage. Now listen, just as we developed Jagannath Dham, we will create 'Durga Angan' so that people can visit and experience it throughout the year." BJP Alleges Symbolism The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has strongly criticised the move, calling it a violation of constitutional principles and accusing the state government of diverting public funds for religious purposes. Party leaders claimed the decision was a calculated attempt to appeal to Hindu voters who have traditionally supported the BJP. Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly, argued that government funds should not be used to construct any place of worship—whether it be a temple, mosque, church, or gurudwara. He accused Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of misusing taxpayer money and disregarding the secular framework outlined in the Constitution.
