Aussies are craving adventure close to home — but where do they turn to for travel inspo?

As the cost of living continues to pinch, Australians are shifting their travel dreams closer to home — and leaning towards trusted reviews when planning their next destination.
New NRMA Index research reveals that two-thirds of Australians (68 per cent) are planning domestic travel over the next 12 months. But what's guiding their decision-making isn't social media influencers or glossy travel brochures — it's word-of-mouth. In fact, 37 per cent of people say personal recommendations from friends and family are their most trusted source of travel advice. Whether it's a mate's camping trip to the NT or a cousin's rave review of a beachside cabin in Tassie, Aussies are looking for authentic voices and real experiences to guide their getaways.
From everyday to epic
The shift signals a deeper trend: Aussies want meaningful, memory-making trips — but without leaving the country or blowing the budget. And the destinations they're dreaming of reflect that: rugged coastlines, outback escapes, wildlife encounters and regional gems that let them slow down, reconnect and unplug.
To help feed this appetite for trusted travel insight, the NRMA has launched the My NRMA Rewards Review Crew — a grassroots movement designed to turn everyday travellers into Australia's next generation of reviewers. The idea? Real people sharing real experiences to inspire others to hit the road, too.
And helping to kick it off, actor Rebel Wilson has offered her own cheeky take on why everyone's a reviewer these days — even if it's just of a mini cookie. 'Being an actress, I've had good reviews and bad reviews,' Rebel laughs. 'Everyone has an opinion — especially in Australia!'
The rise of local travel
My NRMA Rewards has launched its Review Crew initiative to empower Australians to experience more of their own country, while also making it more affordable and accessible.

Qatar Airways purchased massive stake in Virgin Australia to secure capacity Catherine King rejected, Ross Greenwood says

Qatar Airways took a 25 per cent stake in Virgin Australia to secure the additional capacity it was controversially denied by Transport Minister Catherine King in 2023, Sky News' Business Editor Ross Greenwood has declared. Join or tune in at 11am AEST to watch Greenwood's in-depth analysis of the Qatar-Virgin deal and the Aussie carrier's IPO. Labor faced heated criticism for months after it was revealed the Albanese government denied Qatar Airways additional flights following consultation with Qantas. It came at a time when travellers were plagued by sky-high airfares and limited capacity. In late 2024, it was revealed Qatar intended to purchase a 25 per cent stake off Virgin's owner Bain Capital and it was approved by the Treasurer and the Foreign Investment Review Board in 2025. Under the new make-up of the company, Virgin has begun wet-leasing aircraft from Qatar, meaning Virgin could use Qatar's planes and staff on its flights. Greenwood said this new arrangement allowed Qatar to finally secure the capacity denied to it about two years prior. 'For Qatar, the linkage with Virgin gives it political clout - to lift the number of flights it makes into Australia,' he said. 'Now - after the Virgin deal, Qatar will wet-lease aircraft to Virgin and potentially use up to 28 flight slots from Australia to Doha that are currently unused. 'The first of these Virgin flights took off two weeks ago using Qatar crew, aircraft and catering but branded as Virgin flights. 'The whole service that - for nine years - has seen Qatar named by Skytrax as the best airline in the world.' The new partnership will connect Australians through long-haul international flights from Sydney to Doha, allowing for new routes through Qatar's global network of Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Flight Centre's CEO Graham Turner said Qatar Airways backing Virgin had 'solidified' the Aussie airline as it looked to compete with Qantas and the National Carrier's partner Emirates on routes to Europe. 'The airline industry is one where you do need deep pockets and I think that Qatar really offers some serious security there,' Mr Turner told earlier this month. The expertise and massive size of Qatar's fleet, which is often ranked as one of the world's top airlines, is considered essential for Virgin's European expansion. 'Having a partner like Qatar that's obviously heavily committed to the Australian international market, particularly to Europe and the UK, is going to be a really positive thing for Virgin here,' Mr Turner said. Virgin is also expected to benefit from a massive investment by Qatar for 210 widebody Boeing aircraft. Editor in Chief of aviation website 42 Thousand Feet Geoffrey Thomas said the additional aircraft would enable Virgin to relaunch trans-Pacific and Asian routes alongside European flights. 'With Qatar Airways and their buying power … I see them as being a real rock of Gibraltar, if you like, for Virgin,' Mr Thomas told 'In the recent order for about 130 B787s, I see a number of those, possibly 20, making their way to Virgin as part of a bulk buying. 'That will help Virgin relaunch to Asia, relaunch the United States and become a true international airline in its own right.'

Virgin Australia expands Qatar Airways alliance with launch of Perth to Doha route

Despite the travel chaos that dominated news headlines earlier this week, the show still went on for Virgin Australia, with the carrier launching its inaugural Perth to Doha route on Thursday. As part of its milestone partnership with Qatar Airways, the airline has been phasing in its highly anticipated return to long-haul international flying over the past two weeks, and Perth has become the third Australian city to join the expanded network. The maiden departure from Perth International Airport was a positive sign for the aviation industry after the widespread disruptions caused this week by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. The new Virgin Australia routes to Doha use Qatar's aircraft, which are equipped with the ultra-luxe Qsuite business class and feature the widest economy seats in the industry. The alliance between the two carriers is significant as it connects Aussies to more than 170 destinations worldwide and will grow the capacity of flights from Australia to Doha to 2.65 million seats a year by the end of 2025. There are also plenty of loyalty benefits for travellers who value their frequent flyer status. Velocity members will receive 50 per cent bonus status credits on bookings made from now to June 30 for travel between October 1 and May 27 2026 on eligible Virgin Australia flights between Australia and Doha. From October 1, Velocity will increase the number of status credits members will earn on the new routes to ensure consistency across Virgin Australia and Qatar Airways services. Silver members will score 50 per cent bonus points, with 75 per cent for Gold members, and 100 per cent for Platinum — in addition to the benefits already available to Velocity members, from business class upgrades to dining vouchers at Hamad International Airport, premium lounge access, and extra baggage allowance. Virgin Australia is celebrating the launch with a sale on fares to Doha and selected destinations in Europe. Travellers can save up to 15 per cent on eligible fares for travel between October 15 and March 31 2026, if booked by 11.59pm Eastern States time on June 30. Conditions apply. See more at
