King pledges to lend his watercolours to Polish cultural centre in London

Independent05-02-2025
The King has said he will loan a leading Polish cultural centre some of his watercolours after a plea from its gallery to exhibit his work.
Charles was reminded of a request made 15 years ago during his last visit to the Polish Social and Cultural Association (POSK) in west London to display his art.
The monarch joined heads of state and government in Poland last week for commemorations marking the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi death camp at Auschwitz-Birkenau, and he visited the cultural centre in Hammersmith on Wednesday to show his support for the UK's Polish community.
He met a cross-section of Poles and people of Polish descent living and working in the UK, including 101-year old Eugeniusz Niedzielski, a Second World War Normandy veteran who was thanked by the King for his service.
When Charles arrived, Joanna Ciechanowska, an artist and manager of POSK's gallery, asked him: 'Have you brought your paintings, your beautiful paintings, to us?'
The King, who was being shown a small painting exhibition by Polish-born actor and set and stage designer Felix Fabian, replied with a smile: 'No, sadly not,' then joked: 'I'm not sure they're that good.'
After touring the exhibition, Charles told Ms Ciechanowska: 'I'll try and keep up my painting and you'll have to exhibit them here,' but he confessed: 'I haven't done any of Poland.'
Polish culture on display for the King ranged from traditional dishes like pierogi – dumplings – to national dress and music.
He listened as the elderly war veteran told him about his experiences and said 'thank you' at the end.
Mr Niedzielski served with the Polish 1st Armoured Division and was among the troops who landed in the second wave of Normandy landings. He fought during the decisive battle to capture Normandy at the Falaise Gap, where the Allies surrounded Nazi forces.
The 101-year-old described how he was deported to Russia from his homeland 85 years ago this month, something he described as ethnic cleansing, and warned: 'They are doing exactly the same now in Ukraine – the Russians, they're still doing the same thing.'

Is Princess Anne the secret weapon to finally heal rift between Harry, Charles and Wills?

PRINCESS Anne has long been hailed the hardest working royal - and could now prove vital in Harry and Charles' peace talks. It is understood that the Duke of Sussex is ready to talk with his father, the King, after a recent peace summit between their senior aides. 5 5 A working royal all of her life, Anne has been tipped by royal watchers as having a role to play in the peace-building between Harry and his family. The Princess Royal is thought to have some useful advice to offer Harry on life as a "spare" in the royal family. When Harry's notorious book released a friend of the royal family reportedly said 'He really ought to talk to Princess Anne' after the novel revealed Harry's issues with his brother William. It comes as the feud between the Duke of Sussex and the few remaining working royals appears to be coming to an end. Meetings between the Sussex's team and senior aides to the king were held, sparking rumours that a potential reconciliation was on the table. Despite the hopeful signs, William's aides were snubbed from the meeting leading to speculation that the rift between the brothers may never be repaired. California-based Harry is next due to visit the UK in September for the annual WellChild events. It opens up the prospect of meeting his father for the first time in 18 months, though no indication of a meeting with his brother William has been given. The Princess Royal has been branded the "ultimate uncomplaining spare" in a comparison to her nephew Harry. Both the princess and the Duke have had to deal with being second to older brothers. King Charles braves the chill with Princess Anne as pair wrap up warm & greet well-wishers at Sandringham church service Royal watchers have theorised that a sit down with Anne, who has forged her own path as a dutiful and dedicated royal, could be beneficial for the Duke of Sussex as he makes an effort to repair things with his family. Now a source close to the royal family has told The Times that Anne could offer some words of wisdom to her nephew. The source said: "She often talked about how, as children, she was treated so differently from Charles. "She was second to him and kicked further down the line of succession as a woman, but she forged her own path. 5 5 5 "In her twenties she was bolshy and upset about a lot of things, but she came through that. "He should talk to her about her experiences. She is shrewd. She could tell him a lot about what she went through.' Anne reportedly doesn't plan to retire until her tenth decade, following in Prince Phillip's footsteps. A dutiful and hard working member of the royal family, Anne overcame an injury just last year and returned to her duties just a few weeks later. The Princess Royal, 74 at the time, was admitted to intensive care last June with head injuries and a concussion after reportedly being kicked in the head by a horse at her Gatacombe Park estate in Gloucestershire. She was taken to Southmead Hospital in Bristol for tests and treatment before returning to her duties that July. Anne has been almost unstoppable for more than seven decades now, working nearly without pause. The Princess Royal has not offered her thoughts on the rift caused by Harry's departure from life as a working royal and the controversies that came with it. Sister to the king, she set to spend her birthday next month as she always does - sailing with her husband around Scotland for just ten days. After this brief period she will return to her work as a senior member of the royal family. Anne is reportedly notorious among her aides for resisting attempts to create downtime for her. Shying away from attempts to celebrate her in the run up to her 75th birthday Anne instead opted to celebrate more than 100 of the 400 charities she is a patron of. The Princess Royal hosted more than 100 of her charities at a Buckingham Palace reception last month as part of her birthday celebrations.

Pamela Anderson just copied Kate Middleton's style with her go-to handbag

Both Pamela Anderson and Princess Kate have been spotted with this chic white handbag, and the versatile bag is surprisingly affordable considering its A-list fan base They might not have been a fashion pairing we'd expect, but it turns out that both Pamela Anderson and Kate Middleton have more in common than it first appears. Whilst out and about in New York last week, Pamela was spotted carrying Strathberry's Mosaic Bag, which just so happens to be a firm favourite of the Princess of Wales. Whilst Pamela styled hers with a metallic turquoise midi skirt and voluminous pale blue top, Princess Kate paired hers with a tonal all-white outfit whilst at the 'Together At Christmas ' Carol Service at Westminster Abbey in 2023. Both women opted for the vanilla shade of the handbag, showing just how versatile and easy to style it is. Despite its decidedly A-list fanbase, the bag is actually reasonably priced compared to some other designer totes carried by famous faces. You can pick up the regular Mosaic Bag for £485, or you can choose the smaller Nano Mosaic Bag for £395 if you want an even more affordable option. We also spotted some great alternatives, such as Kate Spade's Madison Small Dolly Duffle Crossbody Bag which currently has a huge discount that sees the price slashed from £349 to £99. Alternatively, Aldo's Cocktailchic Bag is now £66.50 down from £99, whilst the Aubrielle Metallic-Buckle Top Handle Bag from Charles & Keith is priced at £75. However, all of the Mosaic Bags are made from 100% calf leather and are handmade in Spain which gives them that luxury edge and justifies the slightly higher price tag. The geometric design was inspired by Scottish artists working with mosaics, and features carefully placed leather panels to create the shape. If Pamela and Princess Kate's vanilla shade isn't for you, there are a huge 12 different shades to pick from, not to mention different textures such as croc effect, suede and grained leather. The bag also comes with a detachable leather strap, which allows you to carry it either as a top-handle bag or as a crossbody, making it versatile. Gold hardware details add to the high-end look, whilst a soft microfibre lining stops your belongings getting scuffed and scratched whilst inside. There's also a zipped internal pocket to safely store valuables. For a truly unique look, you can also opt for personalisation on the Mosaic Bags, including adding additional straps, bag tags, and even getting your initials embossed into the leather. With a 4.9 out of 5 star rating, it's also clearly a hit with shoppers. One said: 'I was a little worried it would be too dark for summer. But I love the Khaki colour. The size is really good, it could fit more than just a wallet and phone. Quality is beautifully made. I would love to own a sky blue for a Mosaic bag too. Would go with all my colourful summer dresses and jeans.' Another agreed: 'Timeless! I am absolutely in-love with my new mosaic bag in brown chocolate with vanilla stitch. It's very versatile & functional for my everyday use & the quality is top notch. It's worth it & such a classic investment. Thank you Strathberry.' Some found a little inconsistency with the stitching, with one writing: 'The stiching in the corners were uneven. One corner had a wide gap.' However, the reviews have all been overwhelmingly positive, with another saying: 'I think this bag is extremely elegant. Finishing of this bag was perfect with quality. The bag is spacious and practical.' Shop the Mosaic Bag for £485 now.

King Charles 'really ill' says Joanna Lumley as she shares health insight

Absolutely Fabulous star Joanna Lumley has opened up on King Charles' cancer battle as she praised the future monarch for his 'extraordinary' legacy. King Charles has been praised as "exceptionally brave" amid his health battles, after his cancer diagnosis in February last year. Dame Joanna Lumley has gave an insight on the monarch, who she described as being "really ill" in a new interview. ‌ The Absolutely Fabulous icon, 79, who is known for being a passionate royalist, heaped praise on Charles. Dame Joanna was honoured with her damehood three years ago by Princess Anne, for her services to drama, entertainment, and charity. ‌ Speaking to Saga Magazine, she revealed: "He's exceptionally brave, because he really is ill, but practically nobody can keep up with him. He packs so much into every day, he walks faster than anybody I've ever met - he's incredible." ‌ However Joanna's admiration for the King dates back many years, as she expressed Charles already had made his mark and a lasting legacy long before he took the crown, according to reports in the Mirror. She stated: "He was the most brilliant Prince of Wales we will ever see, without being cruel to Prince William, because he had the role for so long. The Prince's Trust was set up when he was in his twenties - what a far-thinking thing to do!" ‌ After meeting both Charles and Queen Camilla in person previously, Joanna described the monarch as a "golden, fabulous person". The actress claimed she believed that the media had championed Diana during the royal pair's marriage troubles, observing that "so much mud was flung" at Camilla Parker Bowles, who has now became Queen. She added: "But now she goes about her job without any rancour." Joanna was awarded an OBE in the 1995 New Year Honours List before claiming her Dame title 27 years later. ‌ Dame Joanna expressed that finding out the news through a letter left her in tears, as she reflected on the overwhelming moment she will never forget. The 2022 honours marked the last New Year's awards handed out by the late Queen Elizabeth II before her sad passing nine months later, following her Platinum Jubilee celebrations. ‌ Giving insight into the late Queen, she commented: "She left so gracefully, remaining upright and swearing in Liz Truss as Prime Minister until the very last minute. We never saw her use a wheelchair, even though she was very frail. She was compos mentis, then she went to her bed and died." Joanna published her book A Queen for All Seasons: A Celebration of Queen Elizabeth II back in 2021. She told Jonathan Ross that it included stories from people who had met her throughout her reign, from figures like Winston Churchill to children who gave her flowers on the street. One story came from rock star Rob Halford from Judas Priest, with Joanna revealing: "He went to Buckingham Palace and heard the queen say 'heavy metal.' He said 'I never believed I'd hear The Queen say the words heavy metal.'". Meanwhile, Joanna has also been in the spotlight recently after expressing support for assisted dying, stating she wouldn't want to continue living if left unable to speak or recognise her loved ones.
