Dumka: Six kanwariyas, including three women, died while two dozen others sustained injuries of varying degrees when the bus they were travelling in crashed into a stationary truck at the Jamuniya turn under the Mohanpur police station of Deoghar district early on Tuesday morning.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, chief minister Hemant Soren and other dignitaries took to X to condole the deaths and to express wishes for speedy recovery to the injured.
All deceased, except the driver identified as Subhash Turi (30) of Chakrama village under the Mohanpur police station of Deoghar district, belonged to different districts of neighbouring Bihar. The deceased were identified as Samada Devi (38), Suman Kumari (30), Durgavati Devi (45), Subhash Turi (30) (driver), Shivraj (17), and Devki Prasad (45).
Eyewitness accounts said the collision, which took place at about 5 am, was so intense that the driver fell off the vehicle, which skidded for another 100 feet before hitting a pile of bricks kept along the roadside and coming to an abrupt halt.
All the occupants of privately owned 32-seater bus were on their way to Basukinath, home to another famous Shiva temple in Dumka district, to pay offerings. They had boarded the vehicle from Deoghar after paying offerings at the Baba Baidyanath Dham.

Nailing the Pahalgam perpetrators

If coincidence is ever worthy of historical recall, it was here. After a hunt of 96 days—and, as it happened, exactly before a Parliament debate was to start on national security issues flowing from the April 22 Pahalgam massacre—the Pakistani terrorists who executed it were tracked down and killed in Kashmir. Their end came in the Dachigam forests near Srinagar, on the morning of July 28. Forensics confirmed their identity in another day, and the news broke just as Parliament started a two-day debate on Pahalgam and Operation Sindoor, the Indian military's retaliation against Pakistan. Naturally, that blunted the Opposition's artillery, which had expected to fire away from a position of advantage, with a focused critique of lapses in intelligence, operational strategy and foreign policy. In the event, the Narendra Modi government's big guns managed to hold on to moral high ground, while tactfully sidestepping trickier questions like the Chinese collusion with Pakistan and the alleged loss of fighter jets.

‘Passengers Fell On Each Other': Railways Says Headload, Not Stampede, Killed 18 At New Delhi Station

The February 15 incident was caused by a passenger dropping a headload, leading to a fall on the stairs, said the ministry The railway ministry on Friday told Parliament that the February 15 incident at the New Delhi station, where 18 people died, was caused by a passenger dropping a headload, leading to a fall on the stairs—not a stampede, as initially described. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said on the night of the incident that he was 'distressed by the stampede at New Delhi Railway Station". Distressed by the stampede at New Delhi Railway Station. My thoughts are with all those who have lost their loved ones. I pray that the injured have a speedy recovery. The authorities are assisting all those who have been affected by this stampede.— Narendra Modi (@narendramodi) February 15, 2025 Minister cites report MP Ramji Lal Suman had asked the ministry about the 'stampede which took place on the night of February 15 at New Delhi Railway Station". Union minister Ashwini Vaishnaw cited the findings of a report, saying the incident happened on 'Foot Over Bridge (FOB)-3 stairs connecting Platform 14/15 at New Delhi Railway Station". 'On the day of the incident, sufficient crowd management protocols were in place to handle the overall volume of passengers at the station," he said. Explaining the events, he added that there was a gradual increase in passenger density on the FOB after 8.15 pm. 'Many of the passengers were carrying big headloads, affecting smooth movement on the FOB. There was a big headload falling from one of the passengers, and the pressure was passed on to the stairs of PF 14/15, resulting in the tripping of passengers on the stairs. This led to an incident at 8.48 pm on FOB-3, which was limited to the stairs of FOB. Consequently, passengers fell on each other," the ministry said. Rs 2.01 crore paid to 33 victims Vaishnaw said that an ex gratia amount of Rs 10 lakh was paid to the next of kin of each deceased, Rs 2.5 lakh each to the grievously injured, and Rs one lakh each to those with simple injuries. 'Accordingly, a total amount of Rs 2.01 crore has been paid to 33 victims and their family members," he added. In March, News18 reported that the ministry had said that on February 15, around 49,000 general tickets were issued at the station—13,000 more than the daily average of tickets sold during the previous six months. The rush was for the Maha Kumbh Mela, which concluded in February. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive. Political row erupts over Malegaon blast verdict

NEW DELHI/BHOPAL/MUMBAI/LUCKNOW : Following the acquittal of all accused in the Malegaon blast case, the BJP on Thursday accused the Congress of having concocted the theory of 'Hindu terror' during its tenure in power, to allegedly thwart the political rise of Narendra Modi, who was then the Chief Minister of Gujarat. The BJP claimed the Congress devised this narrative as part of a strategy to appease Muslim voters. 'The Congress can go to any extent in its vote bank politics,' stated former Law Minister and senior BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad at a media briefing. He demanded an apology to the nation from former Congress presidents Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi. Prasad demanded that those discharged from the case, including former BJP MP Pragya Singh Thakur and Lt Colonel Prasad Purohit, be compensated adequately. Thakur supporters celebrate In Bhopal, supporters of Pragya Thakur danced and distributed sweets after hearing the verdict. They want a grant celebration after Thakur returns from Mumbai to her B-29, 74 Bungalows residence in a couple of days. Five kilometres away, supporters burst crackers outside the residence of former CM Uma Bharti at 6, Shyamala Hills. She turned emotional, recounting her meeting with Thakur while the latter was incarcerated. Bharti recalled, 'I met Pragya at the Nashik Jail, when no one went there to meet her. A Maharashtra police officer had told me that she was tortured unimaginably. I was in tears while meeting her and still remember her confirming that she had been tortured beyond imagination.'
