Israeli troops open fire at Palestinians seeking food from distribution hubs in Gaza, over 30 killed
The incidents took place near hubs operated by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, added health officials.
In May 2024, the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation launched operations with backing from the US and Israel.
The United States and Israel governments are seeking to replace the traditional UN-led aid distribution system in Gaza, saying that Hamas militants siphon off supplies, which the UN denies.
While the GHF says it has distributed millions of meals to hungry Palestinians, local health officials and witnesses say that hundreds of people have been killed by Israeli army fire as they try to reach the distribution hubs.
The Israeli Army -- not at the sites but secures them from a distance -- has said that it only fires warning shots if crowds get too close to its forces.
On the other hand, Gaza Humanitarian Foundation said there have been no deadly shootings at its sites, though this week. But 20 people were killed at one of its locations, most of them in a stampede.
The GHF accused Hamas agitators of causing a panic, but gave no evidence to back the claim. The army and GHF did not immediately comment on Saturday's violence.

In a press release, underscoring the Aam Aadmi Party-led government's unwavering commitment to bolstering the education and health sectors, Cheema on Thursday announced an increase in the monthly stipends for interns, Junior Residents, and Senior Residents across government medical and dental colleges in the state. Finance Minister Cheema said that there are currently 907 sanctioned intern posts, 1408 for junior residents, and 754 for senior residents within Punjab's government medical and dental colleges. He said, "The stipend for interns has been substantially raised from Rs 15,000 to Rs 22,000 per month. For Junior Residents, the new stipend structure will see a rise from the current Rs 67,968 per month to Rs 76,000 in the first year, Rs 77,000 in the second year, and Rs 78,000 in the third year. Similarly, Senior Residents will experience an increase from their current Rs 81,562 per month to Rs 92,000 in the first year, Rs 93,000 in the second year, and Rs 94,000 in the third year." Finance Minister Cheema reiterated the state government's dedication to allocating ample resources for education and health sectors. He said that the annual expenditure on these stipends, currently Rs 204.96 crore, will escalate to Rs 238.18 crore following this enhancement, representing an estimated annual increase of Rs 33.22 crore. The Finance Minister affirmed the Punjab government's resolve to enhance healthcare facilities throughout the state. He also mentioned the recent initiative to provide insurance coverage of Rs 10 lakh to every citizen, further emphasizing the government's focus on public welfare. In Gaza, nearly a third not eating for days, says UN; starvation deaths rise to 122
Nearly a third of Gaza's population is 'not eating for days', the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has warned, describing the spiralling humanitarian disaster as reaching 'new and astonishing levels of desperation'. With 470,000 people facing catastrophic hunger and 90,000 women and children in urgent need of treatment, the food crisis is fast becoming one of the worst in modern history. 'Nearly one person in three is not eating for days. Malnutrition is surging with 90,000 women and children in urgent need of treatment,' the WFP told AFP, adding that food prices have skyrocketed beyond reach and that 'people are dying from lack of humanitarian assistance.' At least nine more people died of starvation in Gaza over the past 24 hours, bringing the official toll to 122 since Israel's blockade began last October, Gaza's health ministry said. Among the dead were two children, taking the total number of child deaths from hunger to 83. 'This is not a natural famine … It is a crime of extermination by starvation, unfolding before a silent world,' said Dr Munir Al-Bursh, director general of Gaza's health ministry, on X. Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) also sounded the alarm, reporting that one in four children and pregnant or breastfeeding women screened at its Gaza clinics last week were malnourished. An Israeli military spokesperson did not immediately reply to a Reuters request for comment on the report. The Gaza health ministry says more than 100 people have died from starvation in the Palestinian enclave since Israel cut off supplies to the territory in March. Israel, which has been at war with the Palestinian militant group Hamas in Gaza since October 2023, lifted that blockade in May but has restrictions in place that it says are needed to prevent aid from being diverted to militant groups. In the first two weeks of July, the UN children's agency UNICEF treated 5,000 children facing acute malnutrition in Gaza. World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Wednesday Gaza was suffering man-made mass starvation caused by a blockade on aid into the enclave.
