Flower Show at Courtallam, an instant hit among tourists and children
The Department of Horticulture maintaining the Eco Park has brought vegetables, fruits, flowers and spices from various parts of Tamil Nadu and neighbouring States to decorate the park with cartoon characters, wild animals, birds and even a waterfall. The entrance of the park has been decorated aesthetically with an arch created with coconut, banana and palmyra tree leaves and a range of fruits.
'We have brought dahlia, carnation, gerbera, aster, cut roses, heliconia, lily, cut chrysanthemum, tuberose, bird of paradise, alstromeria, gladiolus, marigold, anthurium etc. for creating interesting characters, birds and animals. The 14-foot-long waterfall created with white flowers is close to the visitors' hearts,' said a Horticulture Department official.
While the Department of Horticulture, which organises the show, expects around 20,000 visitors in four days, the number has already crossed 12,000 in the first two days. 'Apart from tourists, school children in large numbers are visiting the flower show,' said the official.
Seventeen varieties of spices have been used to create a seven-foot-tall and nine-foot-wide butterfly, which attracts every visitor to take selfie with the colourful insect. Vegetables and fruits have given life to the wild animals and birds. The selfie spots in the show is heavily crowded throughout the day with tourists and the children waiting in a long queue for their turn.
Apart from this visual treat, the traditional food stall treats the visitors' tastebuds with snacks and dishes prepared with millets.
Since vertical garden and terrace garden concepts have become popular among the families, the Horticulture Department has dedicated a spot for them.

Blind to rules? ‘Blind date' at Cubbon Park lands organiser in soup
BENGALURU: A planned 'Blind Date' event at Cubbon Park has come under scrutiny after the state horticulture department filed a complaint with the Cubbon Park Police Station against the organiser for not obtaining permission to host the event. The event, announced by 24-year-old Vineet Kathoria from Laggere, was listed on BookMyShow starting at Rs 999 and was scheduled to be held every Saturday and Sunday from August 2 to August 31, between 11 am and 1 pm. It invited participants to engage in anonymous, blindfolded conversations in the park, describing it as a space for 'meaningful exchanges without judgment'. Police sources told TNSE that Vineet, who had been pursuing a degree in computer science, had dropped out and is currently unemployed. The sudden online popularity of the event, which had already drawn interest from more than 1,400 people in less than 24 hours, prompted Kusuma G, Deputy Director of state Horticulture Department, Cubbon Park, to take note. Horticulture Department officials also mentioned that they will also check with BookMyShow, questioning how they allowed listing of an event at Cubbon Park without seeking prior permission.

E-cycle initiative in Bengaluru's Lalbagh to be extended after overwhelming response for pilot project
As many as 1,660 people have taken rides on the e-cycles/scooters provided by the Horticulture Department to explore the Lalbagh Botanical Garden. The initiative, which was announced on June 5, on the occasion of World Environment Day, was launched on June 12. The department had initially procured 15 e-cycles from an organisation called Fetch Mobility. In the first month, between June 12 and 30, a total of 682 visitors took the ride, while in July (from 1 to 28), it rose to 978, indicating an increase in interest. The cycles that run on electric batteries are eco-friendly with zero emissions. 'We have received an overwhelming response to the pilot project, and after the first two months, we have decided to extend it further. We will be procuring 15 more bikes shortly,' said M. Jagadeesh, Joint Director, Parks and Gardens, Horticulture Department. Currently, visitors can take a 20-minute ride for ₹50, and the cycles are available near the Double Road Gate, near Siddapura Circle. The department is now planning to provide cycles near the Main Gate and eventually near the West Gate too. Along with the cycles, riders are also given helmets and knee braces. The project was initiated after observing the success of similar initiatives in countries like Holland, Germany, and the United Kingdom. The department plans to eventually introduce the cycles in Cubbon Park too. 'E-bikes have been introduced in Lalbagh to provide greater mobility to people. Lovely way to see plants, trees and enjoy the good weather,' a social media user recently shared on X. 50 trees QR-coded Another programme, where 50 select trees would be equipped with QR codes to provide detailed information, was also announced on June 5. The officials of the Horticulture Department said that the QR coding of all 50 trees have been completed. These codes will provide information about the origin, migration, common name, scientific name, and uses of the trees. 'It is a time-intensive job, and we have installed it on 50 trees. Taxonomical officers are on the job, and the codes will eventually be installed on all trees in Lalbagh,' Mr. Jagadeesh said.
