Russell Martin looks set to win race to become new Rangers head coach
The apparently imminent appointment is the latest in a series of major developments at Ibrox.
An American consortium led by Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises secured a majority shareholding on Friday and new sporting director Kevin Thelwell officially began work on Monday.
Thelwell stated on his first day that the recruitment of a new head coach would come to a conclusion 'in the coming days'.
Outgoing Real Madrid assistant manager Davide Ancelotti and former Rangers boss Steven Gerrard – who reportedly pulled out of the running – were also among the leading candidates.
Martin has been without a club since being sacked by Southampton in December after a 5-0 home defeat to Tottenham left Saints bottom of the Premier League on five points after 16 matches.
The 39-year-old had secured promotion in his first season in charge thanks to a Championship play-off final win against Leeds.
The ex-Peterborough and Norwich captain began his managerial career in November 2019 when he stepped up from MK Dons' playing squad to take charge of his team.

Martin steered the Dons clear of relegation danger before the pandemic struck and his side finished 13th in Sky Bet League One in what proved to be his only full campaign in charge.
Martin moved to Swansea in August 2021 after the Welsh club made an official approach to MK Dons on the eve of their season opener, leading them to 15th and then 10th-placed finishes in the Championship before moving to Southampton.
Martin's firm commitment to possession-based football drew some criticism as Saints struggled in the top flight and he defended his approach days before the fateful meeting with Ange Postecoglou's Spurs side.
'I get criticised for the same thing (as Postecoglou),' said Martin.
'About being stubborn and all that stuff. But if you believe in something and it's taken you a certain way in life then to deviate too far from that is crazy.
'I can't speak for him but we are also adapting. We adapt shape, approach, personnel, but with the same consistency about what is important for us, with the same concept of the game. We can't deviate too far from that otherwise we become nothing, really.'
Martin now looks set to take his principles up against another purveyor of possession-based football and one of his predecessors as Swansea manager, Brendan Rodgers, whose Celtic side recently won their 13th title in 14 years.
Although Rangers have only won three major trophies since emerging from the Ibrox liquidation crisis of 2012, Martin will have a good grasp of the fans' demands and expectations, which have been raised by the takeover and the promise of a £20million investment in the playing side.
Martin spent the second half of the 2017-18 season on loan from Norwich at Rangers, playing under caretaker managers Graeme Murty and then Jimmy Nicholl.
His appearances included a 4-0 Scottish Cup semi-final defeat and 5-0 loss against a Rodgers-led Celtic side as Rangers finished third in the Premiership.

Managing Newcastle United as Benjamin Sesko call made and Eddie Howe makes £40m pivot
It's been a quiet transfer window for Newcastle United thus far with Eddie Howe having to deal with Alexander Isak's uncertain future while aiming to improve his attacking options It's been a frustrating first half of the summer transfer window for Newcastle United. Only one senior addition has been made to Eddie Howe 's squad ahead of a new Premier League season where the Magpies are set to compete in the UEFA Champions League once again. While the club bolstered their frontline with the £55million signing of Anthony Elanga from Nottingham Forest earlier this month, the Swede is so far the only first-team signing that has arrived at St. James' Park. The uncertainty surrounding Alexander Isak, who was the subject of an approach from Liverpool, and the failed move for Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike, who is closing in on a move to the Reds, has left them back at square one. The Magpies are also in need of a new goalkeeper with all five at the club over the age of 32, and they face a similar situation in defence with six of their defenders over 30. Mirror Football examines who Newcastle might well focus their energy on to sign, which includes a £40m shot-stopper and a potential Isak replacement worth £78m. £40m goalkeeper pivot Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford was a player the Magpies were keen to sign last season but were forced to pull out of a deal due to PSR issues. The young England star enjoyed a record-breaking season in the Championship, where he kept 29 clean sheets and conceded just 16 goals as the Clarets earned promotion back to the Premier League. Remaining a player of interest, Newcastle have returned to the bargaining table to secure a move for Trafford - but their efforts have been put in serious doubt thanks to the reemergence of Manchester City. The Citizens are keen to activate their buy-back clause to sign their former academy graduate. Trafford - who spent six years in City's academy - is being touted as a replacement for Ederson, who, according to reports in Turkey, has agreed personal terms with Galatasaray. While it looks further frustration for Howe, Lille goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier has already been named as an alternative target, and potentially a more promising one anyway. Also valued at £40m, the Frenchman was voted Ligue 1 goalkeeper of the year last season. The 23-year-old kept 11 clean sheets, just one less than league-leading Brice Samba. He could prove to be a shrewd signing for the Magpies, despite Trafford, who struggled in the Premier League at his last attempt, being prioritised. Top defensive target secured Bolstering their defensive ranks is also high on Howe's agenda, especially with the injury-plagued record of Sven Botman. After appearing in 44 games during his debut season in England, the Dutchman has played in a combined 32 in his next two campaigns due to suffering serious knee injuries. Botman's unreliability and Newcastle's lack of younger options in their defence has led them to build a shortlist of Nicola Savona, Giorgio Scalvini and Cesar Tarrega, according to Sky Sports. It's Juventus defender Savona who is said to be at the top of Howe's list, despite suffering an ankle injury against Manchester City in the Club World Cup. The 22-year-old, who made 28 appearances for the Old Lady this past season, played at right back for the majority of those games but transitioned into a centre-back in the business end of the season. Despite reports suggesting he'll be out of action until mid-September, he can still make the move to Tyneside with one eye very much on his future prospects. An offer in the region of £20m could be enough to secure his signature. If not, fellow Italian Scalvini, 21, missed the second half of last season for Atalanta but is set to be fit for the new season, while Spaniard Tarrega, 23, has established himself as first-choice for Valencia. Attacking addition conundrum Newcastle's striker dilemma is a complex one and currently shows no signs of subsiding. The club were hoping to make it three times lucky in signing Ekitike this month. After having gone in for him on two separate occasions in recent years but to no avail, they attempted to lure him away from Frankfurt with a £70m bid that was swiftly rejected by the Bundesliga side. The Frenchman is now set to complete a move to Liverpool with Newcastle forced to look for alternatives, one potentially coming in the form of Brentford's Yoane Wissa. However, with Bryan Mbeumo expected to seal a move to Manchester United in a £71m transfer, the west Londoners could be reluctant to part with their striker, who is also subject to interest from Tottenham where he could reunite with former boss Thomas Frank. With the striker options drying up, Newcastle have been linked with a move for RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko, who is valued at £78m. The Slovenian was favoured by Arsenal but the Gunners have instead opted to pursue Viktor Gyokeres. Despite his hefty valuation, Newcastle may opt to pay the high fee to secure a replacement for Isak, with speculation continuing to grow after his omission in their 4-0 pre-season loss to Celtic on Saturday. Howe admitted he left the Swede at home due to the overwhelming rumours before admitting he'd talked to him about his future. "I chose to send him home," Howe said. "The last thing Alex wants if he is not playing is to be sat in the stand and under that scrutiny, then if he wasn't going to play today, we mutually agreed he shouldn't be here. "Yes, I've had discussions with him, but that's not abnormal," he added. "I respect a player's career and how short it is. Alex has been really good, he's trained really well and I realise there'll be noise around him." With his move to Liverpool now seemingly out of the equation due to Ekitike, it looks likely that Isak will be staying at St James' Park for the foreseeable. But adding Sesko to the ranks to play alongside him - and eventually fill his boots - might well be a long-term investment worth making.

Leeds star insists Daniel Farke's side must aim to be 'the fittest team in the Premier League' in order to avoid immediate Championship return
Sam Byram has stressed that Leeds United must aim to be 'the fittest team in the Premier League ' if they are to have a chance of staying in the top-flight this season. Leeds have spent most of the first fortnight of pre-season at their Thorp Arch training base, before drawing 0-0 against Man Utd in a friendly in Stockholm on Saturday. Daniel Farke 's side now travel to Germany for a week, where they will play two friendlies behind closed doors as part of a warm-weather training camp. 'The intensity (in pre-season) has been a lot harder this year, which you'd expect coming back to prepare for the Premier League,' said Byram. 'There's obviously not as many games as there is in the Championship but for us, fitness is going to be huge. If we can be the fittest team in the league, then it can only help us. So it's something that everyone's been working really hard on - there's a lot of tired legs and tired bodies but we're through the second week and looking forward to the camp,' the Leeds defender added. Tactically, Byram insists that Farke's style will be similar to the possession-based football that saw Leeds win the Championship last season, with a record-breaking 100 points. 'It (the football) will be very similar to last season,' he said. 'The style of football we want to play - possession based, that's in our DNA and that's how we want to play. It's a huge step up and it's obviously a much more competitive league so there's obviously areas that you can't play the same as in the Championship but it's something we've been working on since day one,' added Byram. And with the last six promoted teams all going straight back down to the Championship, Byram stressed that he and his teammates are already aware of the challenge that lies ahead. The 31-year-old signed a new one-year deal with his boyhood club earlier this month. 'We're not under any illusion. We know how hard it is to stay in the Premier League,' said Byram. 'This season, we've got a lot more time to prepare for each game so to have for the most part, a full week to prepare will be very beneficial. Every single point matters and we'll do everything to get as many points as we can.' Leeds begin their return to the Premier League with Everton travelling to Elland Road on Monday August 18.
