UFC exec Marc Ratner reveals Spain event target for 'real star' Ilia Topuria

USA Today5 days ago
The UFC has yet to break ground in Spain with a live event, but as Ilia Topuria continues to evolve into one of MMA's top stars, the efforts to enter the country continue.
Topuria (17-0 MMA, 9-0 UFC) has long called for the octagon to come to Spain since he captured his first UFC title against Alexander Volkanovski in February 2024. He's followed that up with a title defense against Max Holloway then moved up to the lightweight division, where he claimed the vacant belt against Charles Oliveira at UFC 317.
With much discussion from fans and pundits about who is going to be the next breakthrough fighter for the UFC, it seems Topuria has stepped into that void, and UFC Vice President of Regulatory Affairs Marc Ratner thinks the traction is legit.
"Two or three years ago you never heard of Topuria, nobody knew much about him," Ratner told MMA Junkie Radio at UFC X Radio Row in June. "Now he's a real star."
There are a plethora of potential hold-ups to UFC hosting an event in Spain, from the start time of a pay-per-view to a proper venue to a potentially significant site fee requirement.
Ratner, who has been an instrumental figure in UFC's entry into new markets both domestically and internationally, is confident Spain will be confirmed potentially before the end of 2026.
"That's the goal to go to Spain in the next year or so," Ratner said. "In an arena. I don't know if they have the right arenas there yet."

UFC Nashville Main Event Odds And Predictions: Lewis Vs. Teixeira

The UFC is back in action on Saturday following a short break after UFC 317. On July 12 the fight promotion returns to Nashville, Tennessee for the first time since August 2023. The fast approaching UFC Nashville fight card is headlined by a heavyweight matchup between former UFC heavyweight title challenger Derrick Lewis and the undefeated, and fast-rising Tallison Teixeira. UFC Nashville airs on ESPN and ESPN+. The fight card takes place at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, TN. (Photo by Josh Hedges/Zuffa LLC via Getty Images) Derrick Lewis (28-12-0-1) is the No. 9 fighter in the official UFC heavyweight rankings. The 40-year-old former UFC title challenger is coming off a May 2024 knockout win over Rodrigo Nascimento. Lewis, who owns the record for most knockouts in UFC history with 15, is 2-4 in his past six trips to the Octagon dating back to February 2022. Lewis has been with the UFC since 2014. He also has the UFC record for most finishes in the heavyweight division with 15. No active UFC heavyweight has as many fights in the Octagon as Lewis does at 29. Lewis has a UFC heavyweight record eight fight-night bonus awards. SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA - FEBRUARY 09: Tallison Teixeira of Brazil reacts after a knockout victory against ... (Photo by Jeff Bottari/Zuffa LLC) Tallison Teixeira (8-0) joined the UFC in 2024 with a knockout win on a Dana White Contender Series card. The 25-year-old made his official UFC debut in February 2025, scoring a first-round knockout, and a 'Performance of the Night' bonus in a win over Justin Tafa. The UFC is wasting no time in throwing Teixeira into the deep end of the heavyweight pool, giving him a veteran opponent in a main event contest. All eight of Teixeira's career wins have come via first-round stoppage (seven knockouts, on submission). He has been a pro since 2021. He is ranked No. 13 in the UFC's heavyweight weight class. UFC Nashville Main Event Betting Odds And Line Movement: Derrick Lewis Vs. Tallison Teixeira When BetOnline first published the odds for Lewis vs. Teixeira, Teixeira opened as the -212 betting favorite over the +182 Lewis. The betting line has shifted. More Tarfa of New Zealand during UFC 312 at Qudos Bank Arena on February 09, 2025 in Sydney, Australia. (Photo by) If you're looking for an outcome for Lewis vs. Teixeira, I'd say lean toward the fight ending via knockout, and maybe even a first round knockout. My expectation is that the veteran who has been in the Octagon against some of the heaviest hitters in the UFC's heavyweight division is going to be anxious to test the young man who only has 35 seconds of UFC fight time to his name. We don't know much about Teixeira outside of the fact that he's bigger and younger than Lewis. And while this matchup won't answer every question we have about Teixeira, it should tell us if he is able to use his size and reach as well as take a punch from the UFC's all-time leader in knockouts. The big concern is Teixeira's defense. He can get tagged and tagged clean. That is an enormous concern. In an ideal world, Teixeira uses his length to use his kicks to hurt Lewis to the body and then finish him when Lewis is hurt. The betting pick is Teixeira to win via knockout, but that is not a very confident pick because of his limited UFC fight time and the fact that this is a UFC heavyweight scrap. We will have more on the UFC Nashville main event as fight night nears, as well as live results, reactions, highlights and more for the UFC Nashville card on fight night.

Veteran UFC Fighter Ben Askren's Wife Debunks Death Rumors Amid Health Battle

Veteran UFC Fighter Ben Askren's Wife Debunks Death Rumors Amid Health Battle originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The MMA and wrestling communities have rallied around former UFC fighter Ben Askren after it was announced by his wife, Amy Askren, that he was in critical condition. The 40-year-old fighter, known for his dominant wrestling and memorable UFC stint, was admitted to the hospital on June 7 after developing a sudden and severe case of pneumonia, which left him unresponsive. Advertisement While the community has monitored the situation and extended support while respecting his family's request for privacy, unfortunately, rumors popped up that he had passed away. UFC OctagonGetty Former UFC fighter and Bellator champion Ben Askren remains in a critical health condition after being hospitalized with severe pneumonia, and his wife, Amy Askren, has forcefully denied false rumors circulating online that he had passed. Amy Askren and other loved ones sent to a message to TMZ to clarify her husband's condition, writing, 'He is alive and any rumor he has died is completely false.' Askren in particular emphasized that Ben is 'definitely still fighting' for his life and requested continued prayers from fans and the MMA community. Advertisement Ben AskrenGetty Images The false death rumors gained traction after a misinterpretation by current UFC middleweight Caio Borralho. The fighter sparked confusion and controversy when he mistakenly posted an "R.I.P." message for Ben Askren on X, believing the MMA veteran had passed away. The post has now been deleted. Borralho, whose first language is Portuguese, misinterpreted a black-and-white tribute post from Maycee Barber, assuming it signaled Askren's death rather than a show of support during his critical health battle with pneumonia. Further comments made by Askren's close friend and podcast co-host, Daniel Cormier, made the situation even more confusing. Advertisement Initially, Cormier stated on his YouTube channel that Askren was back home in Wisconsin with his family, leading some to believe he had recovered. However, Cormier later clarified on X that Askren was transferred to a Wisconsin hospital but remains under medical care. Ben Askren's condition remains serious, but his family and friends remain hopeful. The broader MMA community will continue to monitor updates directly from the Askren family, awaiting further developments in his recovery.
