TRA launches Business Caller ID feature

Observer26-05-2025
Muscat: The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA), in cooperation with telecommunications service providers, is launching the Business Caller ID feature, with the aim of protecting against fraudulent calls and raising the level of transparency and trust in communications.
The service is currently available to fixed-line subscribers of Omantel and Ooredoo, and the organization's name will appear in English below the name.
It will ensure protection from fraudulent calls and raise the level of transparency and trust in communications.
It will also target local calls from fixed lines to mobiles as the feature allows the caller's name (organization name) to be displayed for incoming calls, even if the number is not saved in the contacts, provided that the receiving device supports the feature.

Omani students launch AI tool to aid learners with disabilities

Muscat – A group of Omani university students has developed an artificial intelligence-powered learning platform to improve access to higher education for students with disabilities, highlighting the growing role of youth-led innovation in the sultanate's digital transformation. Named Ilmify, the platform allows students to upload complex academic material, which is then simplified using AI into accessible formats such as text summaries and audio explanations. It is designed to assist learners with visual or hearing impairments, as well as students with cognitive difficulties who face challenges with standard course content. The tool was developed by nine students from different academic fields and is part of a wider trend across the Gulf and South Asia, where student entrepreneurs are using technology to address gaps in education equity. Ammar bin Rashid al Busaidi, Operations Manager, said the idea stemmed from a teammate's struggle to access course material due to a disability. 'That experience motivated us to create something useful for others in similar situations,' he said. The name combines the Arabic word 'ilm' (knowledge) with '-ify' linking knowledge and technology. Ammar bin Rashid al Busaidi The platform uses an AI engine that analyses individual learning patterns to offer tailored assistance. It also includes an accessible interface, easy navigation and the option to switch between formats. The students worked on Ilmify while pursuing regular studies. 'Balancing classes and technical development wasn't easy, but efficient time management and a shared vision made it possible,' Busaidi said. Plans are underway to launch a mobile app and expand the platform's content to include school-level material, sign language videos and more language options for non-Arabic and non-English speakers. The team is also seeking partnerships with education institutions and organisations that support individuals with disabilities in Oman and other countries where digital learning tools for students with special needs are still limited. Although still in its early stages, Ilmify supports Oman's strategy to develop inclusive, technology-driven education under the national digital economy plan. Busaidi noted that inclusive edtech is a growing sector in countries such as India, the UAE and Saudi Arabia, where governments are investing in AI learning tools for diverse learner groups, including those with disabilities – a trend that Ilmify aims to support.

Forum to strengthen consumer safety in e-commerce in Oman

Muscat – Consumer Protection Authority (CPA), in cooperation with the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion (MoCIIP), hosted a forum on Monday aimed at strengthening consumer protection in the sultanate's growing e-commerce sector. The event, titled 'E-commerce: Consumer Rights and Supplier Obligations', was held under the patronage of Omar bin Hamdan al Ismaili, Chairman of the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority. The forum brought together stakeholders from government institutions, the private sector and civil society to address key challenges facing digital commerce, including consumer rights, supplier obligations and legal frameworks governing the sector. Discussions also covered the risks of electronic fraud and the role of regulatory institutions in ensuring a secure online shopping environment. Mozna bint Rashid al Maamari, Director of Communications and Media at CPA, said the forum served as 'an open dialogue platform bringing together consumers, suppliers, regulatory bodies and others interested in the digital economy'. 'The goal is to develop Oman's e-commerce ecosystem by raising awareness and ensuring a safer digital marketplace,' she said. 'This gathering supports a future-oriented vision that promotes a robust digital economy, empowering consumers to make informed and safe purchasing decisions.' The day's programme was divided into two discussion sessions. The first included a presentation by Azza al Kindi from MoCIIP on the regulation of e-commerce in Oman. This was followed by a talk by Khalid al Siyabi from CPA on safe digital shopping practices, and a presentation from the Central Bank of Oman's Hajar bint Qambar al Ajmi on financial consumer protection. In the second session, Arwa bint Obaid al Zaabi from the Ministry of Economy, spoke about digital fraud from a behavioural economics perspective. This was followed by remarks from Hilal al Alawi of the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority on postal services and e-commerce, and a presentation by Rashid al Alawi from the Ministry of Transport and Communications on postal sector policy. The event concluded with an open discussion among attendees. The forum coincided with CPA's ongoing awareness campaign 'For Safe Shopping', which seeks to encourage secure online purchasing habits. The initiative aligns with Oman Vision 2040.
