Carmen's Crew opens title defense of TBT with win over GoTime Green Machine
The Ohio State alumi basketball team known as "Carmen's Crew," started its defense of its TBT (The Basketball Tournament) championship by winning its first matchup in the tournament over No. 8 seed GoTime Green Machine, 78-67 in Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis on Sunday.
The win came in a different way than years past. Two non-Buckeyes led Carmen's Crew, with Scott Thomas leading the way with 20 points, including three shots from beyond the arc to pace the way. Thomas played for Bowling Green in college. The second-leading scorer was also a player without ties to Ohio State, guard Jamel Morris (from Fairmont State), who poured in 13 points.
The game was close in the first half, with the lead going back and forth. GoTime Green led 21-19 after the first quarter. Carmen's Crew found the mark from three-point range in the second quarter, hitting five triples to take a 42-36 lead at halftime. The Ohio State alums took control of the game in the third quarter, outscoring GoTime Green 24-17 in the period to take a 66-53 lead heading to the fourth quarter.
Camen's Crew couldn't quite put away GoTime Green in the fourth, allowing things to tighten up all the way to 66-61 and then 69-63 when the Elam Ending was activated. From there, Carmen's Crew made fairly quick work of things, winning on a Jamel Morris layup.
Only one former Buckeye played in the first game, and it was Keyshawn Woods, who contributed seven points and four rebounds. William Buford, Trevor Thompson, and Kaleb Wesson did not play. We'll see if that continues going forward, most likely not.
Carmen's Crew will be back in action on Monday at 6 p.m. ET against the winner of Locked In Elite and Fort Wayne Champs.

From one great Butler point guard to the next? Shelvin Mack likes what he sees in freshman
INDIANAPOLIS — When it comes to point guard play, players like Shelvin Mack, Aaron Thompson and Posh Alexander exemplified "The Butler Way." Hard-nosed, heady, pass-first floor generals who excelled at doing all the little things on the court. Players who led by example and could always be counted on to make the right play at the right time. Former Lawrence North star Azavier "Stink" Robinson could be next in Butler basketball's storied line of point guards, but his brand of basketball is different from players of the past. Robinson brings elite athleticism to the point guard position. He led the 2025-26 Butler against its alumni team, All Good Dawgs, who were preparing for The Basketball Tournament. Robinson, one of five freshmen, did not look out of place among former NBA players and overseas pros. He used his speed to navigate full-court pressure from a much stronger Mack. In transition, Robinson is a blur. In the half-court, his first-step quickness allows him to blow by defenders, and he has the explosiveness to finish above the rim despite his 6-foot stature. "He looked good," Mack said of Robinson. "He shoots the ball extremely well and is making the right decisions. He did a good job of taking care of the ball, there wasn't a lot of turnovers. Then Finley (Bizjack) came in and knocked down some jumpers, that kind of balances the backcourt out." Butler's point guard position has been in flux since Alexander left for Dayton after the 2023-24 season. Bizjack got the first shot at taking over the position, but he experienced some ups and downs transitioning to a more on-ball role. Coach Thad Matta brought in transfers Jalen Jackson (Purdue Fort Wayne) and Yame Butler (Drexel) to shoulder some of the playmaking duties. Jackson has experience playing a true point guard role dating back to his freshman season at UIC. Butler is more of a combo guard, but his tight handle and passing ability should allow him to make plays with the ball in his hands. Both Jackson and Butler have one year of eligibility remaining. In a perfect world, Robinson takes over as Butler's point guard for the 2026-27 season. If the display of talent he showed against All Good Dawgs is any indication, Robinson's future is bright, and a meaningful role could be in the cards this season. "It was a great experience, especially going against pros and former players here," Robinson said. "I'm just extremely blessed for the opportunity. It feels good to be playing against other people besides ourselves. "Getting up and down the court, picking up full court. Our strength and conditioning coach (Tyler Watson) is amazing. He does a good job getting us in condition and getting us ready for the fall." Robinson's speed is his best attribute but learning when to utilize it will help him become a more efficient player. The freshman has to learn when to take his foot off the gas and play at a slower pace. Playing against Mack helped Robinson see how to play under control, how to get to his spots and how to run the show from the point guard position.

Best Virginia, Shell Shock look very similar heading into TBT quarterfinals
MORGANTOWN — If Best Virginia is to make a run to The Basketball Tournament (TBT) semifinals for the first time ever, it just might have to beat itself. The WVU alumni team faces Shell Shock (Maryland alumni) at 6 p.m. Monday inside the Charleston Coliseum with three more wins separating Best Virginia from the $1 million winner-take-all prize money. On paper, the two teams are nearly identical. In winning the James Madison Regional, Shell Shock shot a combined 43.4% from the floor, averaged 74.7 points and 40 rebounds per game. Meanwhile, Best Virginia won the West Virginia Regional while shooting 43.5% and averaging 77.7 points and 40 rebounds per game. Both teams averaged just over nine 3-pointers per game. Shell Shock averaged 15.3 makes from the free-throw line. Best Virginia made 14.7 free throws per game. 'The blessing is we'll be back here in the friendly confines,' of Charleston, Best Virginia head coach Jarrod West said. 'The way we play, we'll have to rest up for a couple of days and get our legs back. It's funny, we've played three totally different teams. First game was 94 feet, run and jump and wear you down. Second game, throw the ball 15 feet and in. The third game was about veterans and professionals and isolation (plays).' The quarterfinal game may simply be like looking in a mirror of sorts. Both teams know about being in close games. Best Virginia's three wins came by an average of seven points a game. Shell Shock's margin of victory was 3.3 points per game. Best Virginia has the more explosive scorer in former North Texas guard James Reese, who is averaging 21.7 points per game in TBT. Shell Shock has the more recognizable player in 6-foot-10 center Diamond Stone, a former 5-star recruit who was a McDonald's All-American and ranked the No. 6 overall player in the 2015 recruiting class. He was a one-and-done player at Maryland before becoming the 40th overall selection in the 2016 NBA Draft. Shell Shock's leading scorer, Ronald March (17.0 ppg), just may be one of the better stories of the tournament, too. He began his college career at Houston Baptist, before transferring to a junior college. He finished his college career at tiny NAIA-level Philander Smith (Little Rock, Ark.) University, before embarking on a professional career that's taken him to parts of the world such as India, Sweden, France and Ukraine. 'We should be well prepared and ready to go for whatever we face,' West said. One change West will likely make to his lineup is getting 6-foot-6 power forward J.D. Weatherspoon some more playing time. After sitting out the team's first-round game, Weatherspoon, who played collegiately at Ohio State and Toledo, has scored a combined 26 points and added 21 rebounds in Best Virginia's next two games. 'I could have pouted, but I didn't say anything to the coach,' Weatherspoon said about sitting out the first game. 'I didn't want to send negative energy towards the team, you can't do that. I just kept a positive attitude. I knew the team was going to need me.' 'I take all of that blame,' added West. 'I told him going into our second game to be ready and we've been riding him ever since.'
