New Netflix romcom has viewers ‘shedding tears' over ‘bittersweet' story
Netflix's latest romance offering has left viewers 'bawling' their eyes out. Directed by BAFTA nominee Iain Morris, known for his work on The Inbetweeners, My Oxford Year landed on the streamer today (August 1).
Unlike Iain's hit comedy series, this film is a real tear-jerker. Based on Julia Whelan's best-selling novel of the same name, the romance follows ambitious American student Anna (portrayed by Sofia Carson), who sets out to study at Oxford University.
She attends the prestigious school to fulfil a childhood dream, but her life completely changes when she meets local tutor Jamie (played by Corey Mylchreest). While the romance seems picture-perfect, there's one major issue: Jamie is hiding a secret.
We won't spoil the plot twist here, but viewers have flocked to share their reactions online. "I was not emotionally ready for My Oxford Year on Netflix," penned one X, formerly Twitter, user.
A second praised: "My Oxford Year, wow - just wow - if you need me I'll be crying in my room for the next week. Ps. Sofia you need to pay for my therapy because I shouldn't have been crying so much for one movie."
Meanwhile, a third wrote: "Watched My Oxford Year thinking it's gonna be a cute a** movie but now I'm NOT OKAY and bawling my eyes out." Taking to Google Reviews, another fan candidly shared their emotional response to the drama.
"Such an amazing movie truly," the viewer started. "Everything down to the music sound track was so dreamy and makes you feel so intrigued.
"A very bitter sweet ending though, I definitely shed a few tears [...]." The same viewer added: "I definitely recommend watching this movie."
Someone else chimed in with a glowing review: "Oh my best rom com of the year with a hint of academia." Another viewer, who has read the original book, also shared a positive review.
Taking to IMDb, they penned: "I thought it was well done. The name changes and hometowns bugged me a bit (as I've read the book).
"Somethings like the book of poems he wrote got left out and I feel really shows their relationship and how it has grown. But it was still such a good movie.
"The ending had me crying more than the book did."

If that's not your thing, there's always the classic margherita. Macri has worked across restaurants in London and Rome, so he definitely knows what he's doing. Time Out London editor Joe Mackertich particularly rated Alley Cats' creamy vodka sauce pizza when he headed to the Marylebone branch, describing it as 'every bit as moreish and comforting as the dish that inspired it'. As if that wasn't enough, you can also enjoy a range of starters, including the signature garlic and cheese bites, and a tiramisu to top it all off. We're getting hungry just thinking about it. It's not known exactly when the doors will open on the brand new pizzeria. Based on the caption on the Instagram announcement, which says the restaurant is coming 'VERY soon', it may be arriving very quickly indeed. The best pizza in London, according to Time Out.

In a new video, however, he took along family member, Devon for the ride to pick up a meal deal and pick out any differences between shopping at home and abroad. Intrigued by the unfamiliar Coronation chicken filling, the youngster added it to his basket before heading to the drinks. Taking up Kalani on his orange-flavoured Tango suggestion, the teen completed his meal deal with roast beef Monster Munch. Heading up the escalator in the superstore, Devon grabbed a can of Lynx Africa body spray - known back home under the Axe branding. Next, the pair visited the fresh produce section where they picked up strawberries, whilst over in dairy, the wedge-shaped packing of Edam left Devon a little bewildered. Still, the duo weren't done there, and it was the next item that caused the biggest stir. "Why aren't the eggs in the fridge?" a baffled Devon asked. To which Kalani told him: "They don't have to be. They just put them on the shelves, which I will say that when I first came here threw me for a loop. Now it's just normal for me, but it is still weird saying it." After taking their shopping home to their accommodation, it was time for Devon to tuck in. "It tastes like curry," he declared, after biting into his sandwich. "It's a weird mixture, it's not bad - it's just different." The lad appeared to be more impressed with the Tango, however, gulping it down and exclaiming: "Oh yeah! It's got a lot of carbonation, but it's perfect flavour." He concluded with the Monster Munch, meanwhile, describing the famous corn snack as "10 out of 10". Writing in response, one TikTok user joked: "That kid was destined for a British secondary school! I mean, straight up picking lynx Africa off the shelves? Come on now!" A second person added: "He chose exceptionally well. Good job that man." A third suggested: "Now you can get an ice cream or Pot Noodle with your meal deal.
