Start flights from Navi Mum airport by end of Sept: CM

Navi Mumbai/Pune: Stating that 94% of the work on the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) was over, CM Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday said the remaining work should proceed in such a way that the first passenger flight can start operations by end of Sept. He said airport authorities had been asked to increase the numerical strength of workers to meet this target. Along with the airport, the Mumbai-Pune Expressway 'missing link' project will help the state govt develop an economic corridor comprising Mumbai, Mumbai Metropolitan Region and Pune, he said. For the 'missing link' project too, though MSRDC has set a Dec 2025 deadline, the CM said he was hoping for completion in Oct-Nov. On his way to Pune by road, Fadnavis reviewed the progress of the airport and 'missing link' work with Dy CM Eknath Shinde. The airport's initial phases will accommodate 20 million passengers and 0.8 mn metric tonnes of cargo annually from Sept 2025, he added. He expressed satisfaction that PM Modi , who performed the ground-breaking ceremony for the airport in 2018, will also inaugurate the facility in Sept. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Explora seguros de auto para personas mayores en Chile en 2025 FindingFrenzy Más información Undo He said, "Currently 13,000 to 14,000 workers are involved in the work daily, and we have asked authorities to increase their strength by one-and-a-half times or double by Sept 30, because other licences are complete, but for commercial operations, all work has to be finished." On Oct 11, 2024, an IAF C-295 transport aircraft completed the inaugural landing at the airport. Subsequently, on Dec 29, 2024, an IndiGo Airlines Airbus A320 made the first commercial landing. Connectivity to the airport is also a major focus, the CM said. "We have prepared a big connectivity plan. The linking of Atal Setu to Coastal Road is expected to be completed by March next year. From Thane, a direct elevated road has been suggested and that work will also start soon," he said. Arrangements are being made for connecting the airport from four directions with all modes of transport, including suburban railway, metro or water transport, so that it will be easy for passengers to reach, he said. On the 'missing link' project, Fadnavis said in Pune, "The Navi Mumbai airport is nearing completion and once the missing link gets ready, Pune residents will be able to reach Navi Mumbai airport in a little more than an hour. The missing link project will help them avoid 6 km of the expressway and save half an hour of travel time." The 'missing link' project – a 13.5 km tunnel-bridge-road section from under the Lonavla ghats – has missed three deadlines: July and Dec 2024 and July 2025. The Rs 6,695 crore project is expected to cut travel time between Mumbai and Pune by half an hour by bypassing the congested ghat section. It aims to ease traffic, reduce accidents, improve fuel efficiency, and offer seamless connectivity between the two cities. "While MSRDC set a Dec 2025 deadline, we are hoping for Oct-Nov completion," Fadnavis said. When the other planned or under-construction augmentation projects such as Chowk (Pune-Eway)-Pagote (JNPT) 30 km road, Sewri-Worli connector and smaller flyovers towards the expressway are completed, travel time between the two cities will reduce by an hour. Eighty-five per cent of the Expressway's current traffic is projected to use the new route. At the site after reviewing the 'missing link' project, Fadnavis described it as an engineering marvel, noting that it features India's longest road tunnel and highest cable-stayed road bridge under construction over the scenic Tiger Valley. "Pune is the cultural capital of the state, but now it has also developed as the manufacturing and technology capital. Therefore, these projects are important for all of Maharashtra," the CM said. Shinde called the project a "game-changer." - With inputs from agencies Pics: K K Choudhary

173km, 45 hours, zero sleep: How Bengaluru woman conquered tough Japan trail race

Bengaluru: Battling through snow patches, rugged mountains, and 45 hours of non-stop running, Ashwini Ganapathi, a 39-year-old endurance athlete and coach from Karnataka, achieved a rare feat by finishing the Deep Japan Ultra 100, one of Asia's most demanding trail races. The ultra-endurance event, which began on June 27, saw 135 runners at the start line, including eight international participants. Only 63 managed to finish, and Ashwini stood out as the only non-Japanese athlete — across both men and women — to complete the 173km course, which also involved a punishing 9,000-metre elevation gain, higher than Mount Everest. She was the 10th woman overall to cross the finish line. "I completed the race in 45 hours and 42 minutes, carrying over 6kg of mandatory safety gear, plus food and water that brought my pack weight up to 8kg. As a vegetarian in Japan, I couldn't depend on local aid stations, so I carried everything I needed for the entire race. The dropout rate was huge — 72 runners did not finish — which shows just how brutal the course was," Ashwini shared. "There were snow patches on one summit that we had to cross three times, and several sections were so steep we needed ropes and chains to climb or descend," she said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 먹으면서 똥뱃살 뺀다? 체지방,콜레스테롤 골라 녹이는 '이것' 화제! 한의사 다이어트 더 알아보기 Undo The weather added to the challenge, swinging from humid and cloudy conditions on day one to blazing 33°C heat the next. There were no camps or sleep breaks — just aid stations sometimes spaced 28km apart, unlike the 10km intervals common in Indian trail races. "I didn't sleep for two nights. I tried for five minutes in a nap room, but I just couldn't. We were on our feet the whole time," said Ashwini, who was funded by Tekion, an automotive retail tech company under its 'Tekion for Good' CSR initiative. Full-time focus on fitness Ashwini is a full-time running coach. A former IT professional, she quit her corporate career after nine years to pursue fitness full-time. "I was athletic all my life — I played field hockey in school — but realised I was better at endurance than speed. While others focused on minutes, I wanted to see how far I could go. That's how I got into ultrarunning." Her passion for endurance races dates back to 2019, during the Malnad Ultra (110km) in Karnataka. "I still had energy after running 100km. That's when I started dreaming about doing a 100-miler," she said. In preparation for Japan, Ashwini trained extensively. "I was already preparing for a 100-miler in the US earlier this year. My weekly routine involved 70-90km of running, strength training at Invictus Performance Lab, and long weekend runs across different terrain. The team helped me work on uneven surfaces, muscle control, and injury prevention," she explained. One of her biggest mental boosts came during a training event — the Backyard Ultra — where runners completed 6.7km every hour until only one remained. Ashwini clocked 28 hours and 187.8km, setting an Indian women's record. "It helped me mentally prepare for Japan — how to manage fuel, push through fatigue, and stay calm under pressure." According to Ashwini, her family was her biggest support system. "My husband and in-laws were incredibly supportive throughout this journey. My mother-in-law manages things at home when I'm away training or racing. It's been 14 years since I got married, and their encouragement means the world to me." "With this accomplishment, I hope more women feel inspired to prioritise their health and take care of themselves. It's my wish to see more of us on the trails and in ultrarunning — because women are born with an unlimited supply of endurance. It's just about discovering our abilities," she added.
