Spain earthquake sparks tsunami warning to UK holidaymakers

Daily Record2 days ago
A temporarily tsunami warning was issued this morning following the 5.5 magnitude earthquake.
A 5.5 magnitude earthquake that rocked parts of Spain earlier today prompted a temporary tsunami warning. The alarming quake reportedly impacted around 50 towns and cities in the region, including popular tourists hotspot Costa Del Sol, forcing an alert to be issued to all locals.
Many have described the incident as the "greatest earthquake" they had ever experienced. Those in the area were warned to expect aftershocks following the disaster and a tsunami warning was temporarily triggered. The Express reports it has now been deactivated.

It was earlier reported that 13 aftershocks were triggered after the distressing quake. Many areas of Spain including Granada, Málaga, Jaén, Murcia, Alicante and Albacete were said to have experienced the earthquake, with UK tourist-favourite destination Costa del Sol also impacted.

Residents and tourists were both awoken by shaking at around 7.13am, with one local, Anilla from Almeria expressing how she was left "shivering" from the scare.
The woman took to TikTok to share the fear her and her husband had faced, expressing how it was the "greatest earthquake" she had ever experienced.
Anilla was not alone in the fear caused by the shaking, with another explaining how "scary" the experience had been - and they were 100km from the epicentre.
They said: "Just felt the tremors of an earthquake off the coast of Almeria. Reports say 5.2 magnitude. It woke me up. Bed shaking and we are 100 kilometres from its centre. Scary."

Another said: "In Roquetas De Mar it was very noticeable and it lasted a few seconds, the whole hotel room was shaking."

Others posted clips of their lights swinging from the ceiling as the earthquake hit, with panic ensuing after the event as individuals in the areas of Almeria and Granada received a "scary" phone alert about the earthquake.

The strength of the 'quake has been pinned down to the shallow depth, experts at Volcano Discovery said.
They explained: "The shallow depth of the quake caused it to be felt more strongly near the epicentre than a deeper quake of similar magnitude would.'
A tourist in the coastal town of Agua Amarga in Almeria told Spanish newspaper El País: "I was sleeping, and the whole house shook for a few seconds.

"There was an incredible roar. It woke up my entire family and the neighbours in the complex."
On the magnitude scale, quakes between 3.5 and 5.4 are typically felt by people, though they rarely cause major damage to structures.
Anything under 6.0 rarely inflicts serious damage on well-built structures, though weaker buildings may see some minor cracks or effects. In fact, the strongest quake near Spain in the last decade has been magnitude 5.4, making one of that size fairly rare for the region.

Travel expert's 'genius' hack means you can sleep undisturbed on every flight

A TikTok content creator and female solo-traveller shared how passengers can get a good rest during a long-flight, using a spare blanket and an empty middle seat Escaping the hustle and bustle of the city is needed, especially during the summer months. As many Brits look forward to hopping on the plane and flying away, a good rest beforehand is key for a good start. Ideally, you'd want to relax and get a good sleep before arriving at your destination, but that's not always the case. ‌ Unless you're flying on business or first class, a good sleep on the plane isn't always possible. Being stuck in the same position for hours trying to find the perfect position can be daunting, but this hack is going to help you. ‌ ‌ READ MORE: Flight attendant shares why you should 'never' wear a dress on long-haul flight This is all thanks to TikTok user @travelwithell, a content creator who travels around the world sharing her experiences as a solo female traveller. Her 36-second video has over 69.000 views and over a thousand likes. ‌ She demonstrated how she was able to sleep during her flight home from Bali. Despite being lucky enough to have the middle seat empty, it wasn't enough, so she had to come up with a solution. Hoping to travel comfortably and get a good sleep, Ell had this one idea that completely blew everyone's mind. It didn't take her much effort, and she just needed a blanket. This 'genius' idea, as one comment described it, is the perfect method to stop your feet from slipping off while you're sleeping. Using an extra blanket from the middle seat, Ell tried a knot and put it around the armrest. She wrote in the caption: "Then I put the rest of the blanket in, like a hammock cradle position around my feet so that they're really secure and won't move." Another user commented: 'Think smart, not hard, my sister,' with a third one suggesting: 'You can sorta do it with the seatbelt as well if your plane doesn't come with a blanket.' A 'neighbour-free seat' experience Alternatively, travellers can actually book an entire row in economy. It can be done via the airline's website at the time of purchase by selecting 'neighbour-free seat' or 'seat plus' for an extra fee. Not only does it provide passengers with the three seats available for their personal use, but it's hundreds of pounds cheaper than upgrading to business or first class. Nonetheless, paying for three seats on an airplane for a neighbour-free experience isn't always guaranteed. During oversold flights, as well as in other circumstances, such as aircraft changes and operational need, airlines assign empty seats to waiting customers.

His video is so compelling, it'll leave you itching to explore each destination. ‌ With many not wanting to go abroad this summer due to our gorgeous weather, there are many places in Scotland where the Scottish native recommend that you visit. They're all certain to take your breath away and leave you wondering why you've never visited before. ‌ 1. Whaligoe Steps, Caithness Describing the site, he mentioned it feels like "something from Game of Thrones" when you're there, a sentiment that's easy to share. ‌ The Whaligoe Steps carve their way down the cliffs just south of Wick in Caithness, situated on Scotland's northeasternmost shoreline. 2. Gearrannan Blackhouse Village, Isle of Lewis Nestled on the Atlantic coast of the Isle of Lewis, Gearrannan Blackhouse Village dates back to the 19th century and features nine meticulously restored traditional blackhouses. 3. Gateway emerges as an art piece merged with a fully operational swimming pool and landscaped garden, located at the Jupiter Artland outdoor sculpture park, conceived by artist Joana Vasconcelos. 4. Cramond Island, Edinburgh He advised: "But to reach Cramond Island, cross the causeway two hours before low tide, walking along a line of concrete pillars during the safe times that are found online". ‌ Cramond Island sits amongst the cluster of islands in the Firth of Forth off the east coast of Scotland, a stone's throw from Edinburgh. It's crucial that if you do decide to make this journey, you visit during safe hours, otherwise you risk becoming marooned on the island. 5. Forvie Nature Reserve, Aberdeenshire He described the location as a "haven for wildlife," but cautioned that between April and August, visitors must "take extra care, following signs to protect breeding birds". ‌ Chris also emphasised the importance of giving seals "sufficient space" when encountering them. Forvie Nature Reserve spans nearly 1,000 hectares of sand dunes situated between the North Sea and the River Ythan estuary in Aberdeenshire. In the comments section, viewers revealed they had "never heard" of these locations previously, marvelling at their stunning beauty and expressing their desire to visit "ASAP".
