Spain earthquake sparks tsunami warning to UK holidaymakers
A 5.5 magnitude earthquake that rocked parts of Spain earlier today prompted a temporary tsunami warning. The alarming quake reportedly impacted around 50 towns and cities in the region, including popular tourists hotspot Costa Del Sol, forcing an alert to be issued to all locals.
Many have described the incident as the "greatest earthquake" they had ever experienced. Those in the area were warned to expect aftershocks following the disaster and a tsunami warning was temporarily triggered. The Express reports it has now been deactivated.
It was earlier reported that 13 aftershocks were triggered after the distressing quake. Many areas of Spain including Granada, Málaga, Jaén, Murcia, Alicante and Albacete were said to have experienced the earthquake, with UK tourist-favourite destination Costa del Sol also impacted.
Residents and tourists were both awoken by shaking at around 7.13am, with one local, Anilla from Almeria expressing how she was left "shivering" from the scare.
The woman took to TikTok to share the fear her and her husband had faced, expressing how it was the "greatest earthquake" she had ever experienced.
Anilla was not alone in the fear caused by the shaking, with another explaining how "scary" the experience had been - and they were 100km from the epicentre.
They said: "Just felt the tremors of an earthquake off the coast of Almeria. Reports say 5.2 magnitude. It woke me up. Bed shaking and we are 100 kilometres from its centre. Scary."
Another said: "In Roquetas De Mar it was very noticeable and it lasted a few seconds, the whole hotel room was shaking."

Others posted clips of their lights swinging from the ceiling as the earthquake hit, with panic ensuing after the event as individuals in the areas of Almeria and Granada received a "scary" phone alert about the earthquake.
The strength of the 'quake has been pinned down to the shallow depth, experts at Volcano Discovery said.
They explained: "The shallow depth of the quake caused it to be felt more strongly near the epicentre than a deeper quake of similar magnitude would.'
A tourist in the coastal town of Agua Amarga in Almeria told Spanish newspaper El País: "I was sleeping, and the whole house shook for a few seconds.
"There was an incredible roar. It woke up my entire family and the neighbours in the complex."
On the magnitude scale, quakes between 3.5 and 5.4 are typically felt by people, though they rarely cause major damage to structures.
Anything under 6.0 rarely inflicts serious damage on well-built structures, though weaker buildings may see some minor cracks or effects. In fact, the strongest quake near Spain in the last decade has been magnitude 5.4, making one of that size fairly rare for the region.
