Barcelona dressing room ‘surprised' by Nico Williams transfer U-turn

Yahoo2 days ago
On Friday, Athletic Club announced the renewal of Nico Williams' contract until 2035, as FC Barcelona were left in frustration for the second summer in a row.
After all, the 22-year-old winger turned his back on the Blaugrana again, after agreeing on a six-year contract, with the club already prepared to trigger his €62 million release clause.

Now, according to SPORT, the news of Nico Williams' sudden U-turn came as a surprise in the Barcelona dressing room.
While personal relationships have not suffered – Nico remains on good terms with Lamine Yamal – there is a sense of disappointment due to the change in narrative.
During the national team camp, the Athletic Club winger had repeatedly stressed his desire to join Barcelona.

Indeed, during the Spanish national team camp in June, Nico approached the likes of Lamine, Dani Olmo, Pau Cubarsi, and Pedri and repeatedly told them that this year, he would wear the Blaugrana shirt.

As such, several players believed the deal was done and even spoke publicly in his favour.
However, the change in plans, although respected, upset some Barça players, as seen in the reactions on social media from players such as Dani Olmo and Raphinha.
What next for Barcelona?
With Nico Williams snubbing them for a second summer in a row, Barcelona have decided to close the doors on a move for the 22-year-old forever.
Meanwhile, the La Liga champions have reactivated their interest in Liverpool winger Luis Diaz and Manchester United outcast Marcus Rashford in their bid to strengthen the left flank.
It remains to be seen who among the two arrives or whether Barça explore a different alternative altogether with still plenty of time left in the summer window.

I lost a friend last weekend. That was for him: Brown

Dan Brown has shown nerves of steel to secure an emotional two-shot victory at the BMW International Open. The 30-year-old Englishman revealed he lost a close friend last weekend, but he showcased composure of the highest level to card a flawless 66 to hold off compatriot Jordan Smith with a 22-under-par total in Munich on Sunday. The pair, who were playing in the final group together, were locked at 20 under when they reached the turn, but a birdie at the 12th from Brown, coupled by successive bogeys from the 13th by his rival, saw the lead stretch to three. Smith produced a brilliant bunker shot to pick up a shot at the 15th to cut the gap to two strokes, before both men found the par-five last in two and finish the tournament with a closing birdies. Asked what his second DP World Tour victory means to him, Brown said: "A lot. The first one didn't really sink in, but that one straight away hit me. "I lost a friend at home last weekend. I don't know what to say really, but that was for him. "The last two days I've been thinking about him to try and take my mind off it, obviously try not to get too emotional in the process. "I'm not too sure what happened today like all day, it was an out-of-body experience. Obviously nerves, and then thinking about the importance of winning a golf tournament. "It sort of played it down with what happened, I suppose he was there with me and it made it a lot easier. "This event being such a great event, and then the next two weeks, it's a nice three-week stretch and it's been made a lot nicer." Smith finished as runner-up for the second straight year as he finished on 20 under, while Laurie Canter earned a share of seventh at 15 under. Australia's Elvis Smylie finished 13 shots adrift of the leader.

Does Carlos Alcaraz Have a Girlfriend? His Dating History Is Mysterious

Back in 2022, a tennis site published a photo it said was from Carlos Alcaraz's Instagram story. The picture showed the tennis pro in an embrace with a woman. However, since that time, his dating history has remained mysterious. Whether he has had a girlfriend here or there is much rumored (including with some top women's players) but little confirmed. What is confirmed is that he has told interviewers several times that he is single and lamented the difficulties of maintaining a relationship with his tennis travels. The site Tennis Tonic, which posted the photo of Alcaraz kissing a woman's cheek, said his girlfriend at that time was Maria Gonzalez Gimenez. He was only 18 when that photo was shared and has since burst into fame on the tennis circuit, most recently competing at Wimbledon. "Maria is also a tennis player from Murcia playing for Murcia Club de Tenis," that site wrote. But even then, he was keeping the relationship private, Tennis Tonic reported. However, Gimenez has not been seen at his side since that time. And in an interview with tennis coach Patrick Mouratoglou, tennis player Nick Kyrgios made controversial comments when comparing Alcaraz with fellow tennis pro Jannik Sinner. "I choose Sinner, because Alcaraz loves girls," he said in that interview. "He could get distracted, he might party too much." "That's my only thing. Sinner will stay more locked in I think," he added. In 2023, Vogue wrote, "There were reports of him dating Maria Gonzalez Gimenez, but Alcaraz alludes to a breakup and says he's been single for 18 months." 'It's complicated, never staying in one place,' he told Vogue. 'It's hard to find the person who can share things with you if you're always in different parts of the world.' In 2024, Alcaraz revealed that he still lives with his mother. "When I finish a tournament, it doesn't matter if I win or not, I just want to get home to be with my family,' he told The Times. 'I live with my mum and dad, my older brother and two younger brothers. To them I am not a big tennis star, just a normal guy. One of the things about tennis is that you travel a lot and my dad and older brother come with me. My older brother is my hitting partner.' The interviewer asked him, "Are you in a relationship?' He "blushes ever so slightly," the article said, quoting him as saying, 'No, I am single. I am looking for someone. It can be difficult as a tennis player to meet the right person because you are travelling all the time.' 'I doubt you will be short of admirers,' the author said. 'I hope so,' he responded. Women's tennis star Emma Raducanu commented on dating rumors as Wimbledon is underway. She declared that they were just "good friends." Rumors have also swirled about Alcaraz and Iga Swiatek, but they have not been Carlos Alcaraz Have a Girlfriend? His Dating History Is Mysterious first appeared on Men's Journal on Jul 6, 2025
