Man unable to buy new clothes for kids commits suicide
The family of Muhammad Siddique Khan was left screaming in the pain of loss and betrayal when they found him hanging with a rope around his neck in his room at their humble home in the Kala Pull area.
The neighbours in the closely-knit slum community rushed in the house, and took control of the situation. Someone called the police helpline 15 and a squad rolled in after a few minutes. Siddique's body was moved to JPMC for legal formalities.
His children were devastated for Siddiq having ended his life for a few dresses. His neighbours told the police that Siddiq was unemployed and was struggling hard to make ends meet. Of late, they were surviving on handouts and could barely afford a square meal.
Siddiq's death shows a dark side of the society where professional beggars thrive on looting alms but men of honour, who dare not spread their palms for alms prefer to die rather than beg.
Speeding car kills couple
A couple, riding a motorcycle, was killed in a collision with a car speeding near the railway gate of Mai Kolachi Road in Docks area on Sunday. Their two-year-old granddaughter was injured in the accident.
The bodies of the deceased and the injured child were shifted to Jinnah Hospital by Edhi ambulance. According to the police, the deceased woman, 50-year-old Amina, and the man, 65-year-old Abdul Sattar, were husband and wife.

State will ensure justice: CM terms Degari killing case ‘test case'
QUETTA: Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfaraz Bugti on Monday clarified that there was no marital relationship between the man and woman who were brutally killed in an alleged honour killing in Sanjeedi Degari, a suburb of Quetta. Terming it a 'test case' for his administration, he vowed that all those responsible for the crime would be brought to justice. Speaking at an emergency press conference in Quetta, the chief minister said that 11 suspects had so far been arrested, and law enforcement agencies were conducting raids to apprehend more. 'Whoever is involved in this case will be arrested, produced before a court, and punished in accordance with the law,' he asserted. CM Bugti rejected the widespread impression on social media that the deceased were a recently married couple. 'There was no marital relationship between the two,' he said, adding that both the woman and the man were already parents—she had five children and the man had five or six. The clarification comes in the wake of a disturbing video that went viral last week, purportedly showing the execution of the couple in the name of honour. The incident, believed to have taken place days before Eid-ul-Azha, sparked national outrage and prompted the Balochistan High Court to take suo motu notice. The chief minister said the provincial administration had taken notice of the incident even before the video gained attention on social media. He reiterated his commitment to ensuring justice, stating that the state would not abandon the oppressed. 'This case involves victims, and the state is firmly standing with them,' he said. He also confirmed that the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) concerned had been suspended for negligence, and further disciplinary actions would be taken against those who failed in their duties. Calling the Degari killings a 'test case,' Bugti stressed that no individual or group could be allowed to operate above the law. He said the incident had raised questions about the misuse of Jirga systems and tribal authority in criminal matters. 'No attempt is being made to disarm tribal society, but no society can condone such killings,' he said. 'The factors behind this crime must be uncovered. Jirgas that promote such actions are being actively stopped by the state. The government will be run under the Constitution.' In response to questions about the broader law and order situation in the province, the chief minister said that security forces had killed 10 militants in an operation conducted the previous day. 'These terrorists seek soft targets and attempt to flee after carrying out attacks. But our forces are effectively countering them,' he said. Bugti criticised elements that he claimed were exaggerating the security threat in Balochistan, stating that the situation was gradually improving. 'The people should not be afraid. We are defeating terrorism and will restore peace across the province.'

Six drowned picnickers' corpses retrieved
The bodies of six members of two families who had drowned in in the Indus and Jhelum rivers have been found. In Bhakkar, a family outing to the Indus river ended in tragedy when a 21-year-old woman drowned along with her two young cousins. According to local officials, a six-year-old girl slipped into the river, after which her 13-year-old sister jumped in to save her. Seeing both girls drowning, their 21-year-old cousin also leapt into the river to rescue them. However, the strong current swept all three into deeper water. Upon hearing the screams for help from Lal Shah, the husband of the woman, local residents began a search and retrieved the bodies from the river after about half an hour. Bhakkar District Police Officer Shehzad Rafiq Awan told The Express Tribune that the deceased woman had been married 15 days earlier and was visiting a relative, Syed Taqqi Shah, in Jhok Jando, along with her husband, from the nearby town of Behal. Due to the river's proximity, they had gone for sightseeing at the Basti Mian Khan dyke with the two young cousins. The funeral of the woman was held in Kathanwalla and of Taqi Shah's daughters in Jhok Jando. The DPO explained that the incident had occurred during daytime and the water was seven to eight feet deep at the spot where the six-year-old girl had drowned. Her 13-year-old sister and newlywed cousin jumped into the same dangerous area in an attempt to save her, resulting in all three losing their lives. As the area descended into gloom over the tragedy, the official emphasised the importance of avoiding to take young children to the riversides. He suggested that even adults should prefer alternative locations for recreation. Meanwhile, the bodies of three members of a family from Kot Lashkari Khan in Sahiwal district were retrieved from River Jhelum. The family had gone to the river for recreation on the third day of Eid. A woman was taking selfies near the river when she slipped into the water. Her sister attempted to rescue her. Eventually, four family members were swept away while trying to save each other from drowning. Local residents managed to save one young man, Zeeshan Anwar. Sarfaraz Raja, his wife Nida and sister-in-law Nazia Sajjad drowned in the river. Their bodies were found seven kilometres downstream 20 hours later. The bodies were retrieved by local divers and teams from Rescue 1122.

Babar's plea against harassment by FIA: Urgent hearing to take place today
ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) fixed for urgent hearing today (Thursday), a petition filed by ex-senator Farhatullah Babar against alleged harassment by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA). The petition was filed Wednesday under Article 199 of the Constitution by advocates, Imaan Mazari and Hadi Ali Chattha against the Ministry of Interior and the FIA and others as respondents, 'Seeking intervention of Court against the unlawful, illegal, arbitrary and mala fide conduct in continuously harassing the petitioner through repeated issuance of ambiguous and illegal notices and summons, in what is an illegal fishing expedition/roving enquiry by the FIA in violation of laws and principles of natural justice.' The petition said that the FIA enquiry was initiated on March 25 on the complaint of a private citizen, unknown to him, living in Morgah, Rawalpindi alleging 'suspected corruption, tax evasion and illicit asset accumulation' and he appeared before the FIA on March 28 a day before Eid holidays. No copy of the complaint was provided to him. Interestingly, on 11 April 2025, a detailed questionnaire of 12 questions was slammed at him through WhatsApp, directing him to answer them all by 7 April 2025, four days prior to receiving it. The questions delved deep into the past, requiring collecting information from multiple offices within and outside the country. Despite this, the petitioners provided answers to all the questions. Instead of acknowledging the answers provided to the questionnaire, the FIA then asked the petitioner on May 27 to explain the source of properties which it claimed to have received from the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) when he served as senator and also explain some banking transactions, within five days. The petitioner rejected the alleged transactions of Rs1,500,000 in his account on 3 April 2025 and another alleged transaction of Rs3 million on 5 July 2025 (almost a month away in the future). Thereupon, the petitioner was then directed to appear in person, the petition said. Just when the petitioner prepared replies to these questions, the FIA sent him another notice by WhatsApp, asking him to appear in person, disregarding the previous notice to send written replies. A day before Eid on June 6, Farhatullah Babar uploaded on X (formerly Twitter) extracts from his replies to the FIA and said; 'Two days ago, FIA regurgitated questions already replied to by me on May 12. One Q alleged transaction of 3 M on 5-7-25 (still a month away). Just when replies were being readied, the FIA WhatsApped to appear in person next day (June 5) on eve of Eid holidays.
