When Alia Bhatt Opened Up About Her Postpartum Weight Loss Journey: "I Didn't Put Any Pressure on Myself"

NDTV3 days ago
Bollywood celebrities often lose or gain weight for either a role or just to stay fit. One celebrity who has always been vocal about her fitness is Alia Bhatt. From shedding the extra kilos before entering Bollywood to losing weight after giving birth to her daughter Raha in November 2022, the actor has been open about her weight loss journey.
How Did Alia Bhatt Lose Her Postpartum Weight?
The Gangubai Kathiawadi actor is known for her stellar performances in movies, but she is also a fitness aficionado who loves keeping herself fit. While many people believed that Alia Bhatt opted for unnatural methods to lose weight, the actor said that was not the case.
She Relied On Natural Methods For Weight Loss
"My job is a visual medium, so I do need to present myself in a certain way, sometimes also for continuity. Even so, I wasn't hard on myself because I was so proud of what my body had done when I delivered Raha. I know everyone believes that I lost weight unnaturally, but the truth is that I can't even get my wisdom tooth extracted at the moment since I'm breastfeeding and can't be given anaesthesia," Alia Bhatt told Vogue in a 2023 interview.
Many believed that, which is why the Raazi actor decided to document her fitness journey on social media. " I didn't put any pressure on myself. The doctors advised me to only push harder in my workouts post 12 weeks, and I did that."
Breastfeeding Helped
Alia Bhatt credits breastfeeding for weight loss. A study published in the Current Opinion in Clinical Nutrition & Metabolic Care found that breastfeeding can help women in postpartum weight loss. She avoided crash diets to protect her baby's nutrition while breastfeeding.
Made Small Changes
Alia Bhatt's doctor suggested that she should work out six days a week and eat clean after 12 months of having Raya. She told Vogue that she started with 15-minute walks and breathing exercises in the first two weeks postpartum. By 12 weeks, she gradually resumed regular workouts - walking, Pilates, yoga, light cardio, and strength training.
She also ate nutrient-rich food and practised portion control. Her diet included fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and proteins - and even gond ke laddus, courtesy of her mother-in-law and veteran actor Neetu Kapoor.
No Scale Obsession
When a person tries to lose weight, they become obsessed with what the weighing scale says, but that shouldn't be the case. Alia Bhatt avoided obsessively checking her weight, opting to weigh herself just once every two weeks. Her goal was not to "snap back" quickly but to heal holistically.
Prioritised Mental Well-Being
Alia Bhatt also spoke against snapback culture, urging new moms to be kind to themselves and let their bodies recover at their own pace.
"People need to understand that putting on weight during pregnancy is not a result of eating too much; it's because you're making life inside you, and that life needs that extra weight. It has to be in sync with your BMI, of course, and you should consult a professional if you have questions, but you're supposed to put on a certain amount of weight. It's completely okay!" Alia Bhatt shared this advice for all new mothers out there.
From Alia Bhatt's weight loss journey, it is evident that the actor took a holistic approach to fitness and did not rely on fad diets to lose weight.

Alia Bhatt likes people watching to cheer herself up on bad days: ‘I'm not looking into their bedrooms, but..'

Constant hustle and trying to keep up with responsibilities and deadlines can wear us down. Finding pockets of escape can help recentre and bring us back to what really matters. In conversation with Jay Shetty on his podcast On Purpose, Bollywood actor Alia Bhatt opened up about a simple activity that helps cheer her up on bad days. 'Very often what I do, especially when I'm having a bad day, I have this little balcony at the back of my bedroom – it's very small, sort of like a fire exit. I just go and stand there, and watch people. In Bombay, especially, there are a lot of buildings that are together. So this might sound a little creepy, but when I go and stand there, I just have a wide view of activity in different people's homes,' recalled the Jigra actor. 'Somebody is walking with clothes, somebody's watching television. I'm not looking into their bedrooms. But it just gives me a sense of life existing whilst yours is. And it just puts a lot of things into perspective,' she further explained. Rima Bhandekar, Senior Psychologist – Helpline at Mpower, Aditya Birla Education Trust told us, 'When we watch others going about their day, it creates a sense of empathy in the observer without any actual interaction. It brings us back into 'now' through just noticing life as it unfolds without a word. It forces our brain to focus on others rather than oneself, away from overthinking, anxiety, and stress, to feel a sense of 'calm' in the moment. According to her, being surrounded by a group of people in public spaces such as gardens, shops, and public transport reconnects our brain to the real world around us. Most thoughts generated in our brains are repeats of our ongoing worries, hectic schedules, and self-judgment. When the mind shifts from internal chaos to external rhythm, it could be helpful for people prone to anxiety. Bhandekar added that when we see new faces, people from all walks of life move around, interacting with the environment, it sparks curiosity and lifts our mood. When we see people having a good time, it also fills our hearts with warmth, and we smile unknowingly. There can be multiple reasons that sour your mood. Often, one minor mishap, if not addressed promptly, can set off a chain reaction of negative events, ultimately derailing our entire day. The domino mindset is a term given to the profound impact that small setbacks can have on our overall well-being and productivity. According to counselling psychologist and mental health advocate, Sohini Rohra, there are many lines of treatment that a clinician or psychologist can use to address the domino mindset of overgeneralising, but a few steps that the individual can take to save themselves from emotional turmoil are as follows: *Try to make a list of evidence and facts to support the thoughts that are driving you to conclude the worst. *Are you being guided by feelings or evidence? *Make a list of evidence that might prove your conclusion to be false. *Make a list of the pros and cons of your way of thinking. *Is everyone around you in agreement with your conclusion *Try to step outside of yourself and see if you would come to the same conclusion if your loved one were in your shoes. *Learning to form individualised and situation-specific judgments rather than global judgments. *Recall specific events where you have succeeded in proving yourself otherwise. *Learning to set expectations that are not overly optimistic but, in fact, realistic.

Cal Club win to add spring in step for swish set's gender parity march

1 2 Kolkata: A day after winning the president's election, Calcutta Club's first woman president Kasturi Raha is still soaking in the congratulatory messages both for herself and her gender. But for most other colonial-era social clubs in the city, complete gender parity is still some distance away. In other premier social clubs, such as Bengal Club, Tolly Club, RCGC, RCTC, Calcutta Rowing Club and CCFC, no woman has ever led the club or contested for the top post, according to members. At most of the premier clubs, women's representation in the committee is either low or non-existent. The proportion of women to the total number of members is below 20% at most clubs. Raha told TOI it was a historical win. "Calcutta Club will have its first woman president in 117 years. To become the president of this club in itself is an achievement. I could not have achieved this without the support of the members who were present there and voted for me. I also had the blessings of those who were not present," she said. At Calcutta Club, the total number of members is 3,850, among whom less than 300 are women. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Indonesia: New Container Houses (Prices May Surprise You) Container House | Search ads Undo Gautam Roy, a senior member of Calcutta Club, called the 2025 election a "landmark" one. "This time, not only was a woman elected president at the club but there was also another woman in the committee, Anusua Das, who received the maximum number of votes," he said. While the 150-year-old Saturday Club had its first and only woman president almost 18 years ago, Dalhousie Institute elected its first and only woman president in 2015. Congratulating Raha on her achievement, DI's immediate past president Jayajit Biswas, said, "At Dalhousie Institute, we are especially delighted, having had the distinction of electing Denise Smith as the first woman president in 2015. We currently have four dynamic women on our council." Recalling her days as DI president, Smith said, "It was an honour to be the first woman president of the 165-year-old DI. There were so many illustrious Kolkatans who were DI presidents before me. The progressive spirit embodies our club—from women empowerment to strong cosmopolitan credentials, to quizzing to jazz and more." Welcoming the development at Calcutta Club, the immediate past president of Bengal Club, Sumit Ray, pointed out they, too, were looking at a woman president in the next few years. "We now have two women in our committee. We don't have any election at our club. Here, a member becomes a president on seniority basis. So at one point, a woman will become a president," he said, adding several women had joined the club the past couple of years. "We are now very gender equal," he added. The CEO of Tolly Club, V Ganapathy, and former Tolly president Aniruddha Lahiri lauded the election result at Calcutta Club. "I am really happy Calcutta Club has chosen a woman to lead the club affairs," Ganapathy said. The steward of RCTC and six-time president of South Club, Enrico Piperno, who was also a leading tennis player, pointed out that if a woman could lead a country why not a club. "At RCTC, Smita Bajoria served on the committee for a long time. But historically, RCTC being a racing club, the number of male members is much more," he said. RCGC captain Gaurav Ghosh said, "Unlike many other clubs, we at RCGC, have had woman members for over 40 years." Calcutta Rowing Club secretary Chandan Roychowdhury described Raha's win as a great example of women's empowerment. "CRC is perhaps the only club that has had woman members since inception," he pointed out. Rishabh C Kothari, the president of Hindusthan Club, said it was heartening to see a woman elected to the leadership position at Calcutta Club. "Several clubs in Kolkata, including Hindusthan Club, have witnessed a generational shift in recent years with fresh teams and new ideas coming in. This change is a welcome step towards meeting the aspirations of a younger generation and reflects a growing commitment to inclusivity and gender diversity in club leadership," said Kothari, who is also a member of Calcutta Swimming Club and Bengal Rowing Club.
