Gillian Anderson had an epiphany that changed how she saw aging: ‘Why waste time?'

Toronto Star20-06-2025
Gillian Anderson does not mince words. Speaking about wellness culture and the pressure to self-optimize on the podcast 'How To Fail' in 2023, she said in a calm, matter of fact and confident tone: 'I realized that anytime somebody tells me to do something, I'm going to say f—k off.' In a culture where women still feel obliged to be people pleasers, the 56-year-old actress makes being forthright look easy.
When we spoke over video call from the Cannes Film Festival, where Anderson was attending L'Oréal Paris' Lights on Women's Worth Award, I asked if she's always been able to set boundaries. 'I was quite a rebellious teenager,' she said. Yet it wasn't until her 40s that she felt able to speak her mind without fear, without worrying about what other people thought. 'It was almost like something that pre-existed but I didn't realize how valuable it was, and that it was something that I could actually vocalize and delight in,' she said. 'There was something that felt really good about having that.'

L'ORÉAL PARIS DOCUMENTARY WINS GRAND PRIX IN FILM AT CANNES LIONS 2025

Documentary Celebrating Ilon Specht, McCann Copywriter Behind L'Oréal Paris' Iconic Tagline Who Started a Feminist Movement of Self Worth, Takes Home Five Cannes Lions Win Marks McCann's 3 rd Grand Prix in the Film Category and First Ever Lions' Honors for Two-Time Oscar ® - Winning Director Ben Proudfoot and Second Grand Prix for TRAVERSE32 CANNES, France, June 24, 2025 /CNW/ -- "THE FINAL COPY OF ILON SPECHT," an emotional and cinematic tribute to the woman behind one of advertising's most enduring taglines, has won the Grand Prix in the Film category at the 2025 Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity. Directed by two-time Academy Award® and current Emmy® winner Ben Proudfoot, the 17-minute documentary honors Ilon Specht, the trailblazing McCann copywriter whose four words - "Because I'm Worth It" - empowered generations of women globally and helped to build L'Oréal Paris into the largest beauty brand in the world. " THE FINAL COPY OF ILON SPECHT" is the result of a collaboration between the award-winning global creative agency network McCann, Proudfoot's Breakwater Studios, and production company Traverse 32 for L'Oréal Paris. The film is an intimate deathbed account of the unsung advertising genius who coined L'Oréal Paris' iconic slogan, a four-word feminist manifesto that, against all odds, changed advertising forever. The documentary chronicles Specht's extraordinary life - from her deeply personal relationship with her step-daughter, Alison Case, to the moment she forever upended the male-dominated world of advertising with her revolutionary vision and timeless words. "Ilon Specht was more than just a copywriter, she was a visionary," said Delphine Viguier-Hovasse, Global Brand President of L'Oréal Paris. "She defied the norms of her time with one bold statement that turned into a global movement. I'm grateful to our partners at McCann who have helped bring her final words to the world in a way that honors her legacy." Since its world premiere at the 2024 Tribeca X Festival, " THE FINAL COPY OF ILON SPECHT" has been widely celebrated for its craft and cultural significance. It is currently streaming on TED, AMC+, and Prime Video. The film not only showcases creative and emotional storytelling at the highest level but also perfectly aligns with L'Oréal Paris' ongoing dedication to women's empowerment. As the longest-running brand platform in history - translated into over 50 languages - "Because I'm Worth It" remains a rallying cry for self-affirmation, identity, and agency. "Ilon's story is the essence of Truth Well Told, an honest, courageous expression that challenged the status quo of advertising, reshaped how women see themselves, and changed how brands speak to women," said Charlotte Franceries, CEO of McCann Paris. "We're celebrating Ilon's legacy, but we're also helping people understand what 'Because I'm Worth It' really means to women all over the world. "The most powerful truths, the ones that transcend time and become universal, are also the most personal, those that come from the guts," said Javier Campopiano, Global Chief Creative Officer of McCann Worldgroup and McCann. "For Ilon Specht, 'Because I'm Worth It' was much more than a slogan, it was her way to express her anger towards the ethos of the time, and her passion for ideas. That is the reason why those four words she coined 50 years ago have touched so many hearts and are still relevant today." At this year's Cannes Lions, the film earned five awards: · GRAND PRIX – Film · GOLD – Entertainment · SILVER – Entertainment, PR · BRONZE – Film Craft Specht sadly passed away in April 2024. These awards recognize the emotional final statement and are a grand fitting tribute to how she shifted the entire culture with just four words. The win marks Proudfoot's first Cannes Lions recognition and first Grand Prix. "Many gifted hands shaped this film, but this extraordinary recognition belongs to one person: Ilon Specht. She transformed advertising forever with her words but never won a Lion—until now. I hope this pride of Lions and Grand Prix finds her. A worthy, if belated, triumph. Thank you to the jury, and to L'Oréal Paris, McCann, and TRAVERSE32 for doing what few dare to do: completely trust the filmmakers. That was the magic. As Ilon said, 'It's about humans. It's not about advertising. It's about caring for people," said Proudfoot. THE FINAL COPY OF ILON SPECHT" is the first collaboration between the award-winning teams at TRAVERSE32, IPG Mediabrands' global branded production company and development studio, and Proudfoot's Breakwater Studios. In addition to directing, Proudfoot produced the film alongside Breakwater Studios' Kirstin Falk and Rachel Greenwald, and TRAVERSE32's Brendan Gaul and Brett Henenberg. Daryl Lee, Global CEO McCann Worldgroup, Charlotte Franceries, President, McCann Paris, & EVP Global Business Leader, L'Oréal Paris, and Julien Calot, Chief Creative Officer, McCann Paris served as executive producers. The film and campaign have also helped solidify McCann Paris as one of the top-performing agencies at Cannes Lions 2025, with this work contributing significantly to the network's global achievements. Special recognition should also be paid to Mónica Salazar and Tim Johnson, who were awarded a Bronze Lion in Film Craft for best editing. Ezra Miller has ‘remorse' over past behaviour, hints at return to Hollywood

Actor Ezra Miller revealed that they have 'a lot of remorse' for their past behaviour after stepping away from Hollywood for a couple of years. Miller's career was derailed after they were at the centre of several criminal cases and the subject of numerous allegations, including assault and grooming. The star of The Flash, who is non-binary and uses they/them pronouns, addressed their past controversies in an interview with Lo Speciale Giornale following their first major red-carpet appearance at the Cannes Film Festival since stepping away from the entertainment industry. 'When you work in this industry, you will find yourself in deep relation with a lot of people who do not give a single f— about you or your well-being at all,' Miller said. 'Not that I don't hold a lot of remorse and lamentation for a lot of things that I did and for a lot of things that happened in that time, but I'm really, really grateful for the lessons that came with that abyss. Story continues below advertisement 'When we go through those crucibles, if we can survive — which was up in the air for me, if I'm being real — we then have that capacity to see other people in their crucibles and just to reach towards them. 'That grows more and more rarefied in our world, too. Like, the capacity to do that, the desire to do that, the willingness to do that. 'We've become very consumed in notions of perception, self-perception, how we're perceived in the world. I really believe in digging past that and being a friend to people. And the people who did that for me, they have my lifelong devotion.' Miller said they attended the Cannes Film Festival at the request of director Lynne Ramsay, whom they called 'one of the greatest living filmmakers' and shared that they're working on a new movie together. It's a film that her and I are writing together,' they said. 'And I came to Cannes because she asked me to come, and if there's anything I really still believe in in my life, it's devotion to one's people, one's loved ones … above all else.' Miller said their current relationship with the movie industry is on 'tentative grounds.' 'If you've been in the woods for three years, I do not recommend going straight to Cannes, where every photographer and every weirdo, every rich genocidal freak (will) be there, you know what I mean?' Miller said. 'It's not an easy re-entry.' Story continues below advertisement View image in full screen Joe Manganiello and Ezra Miller attend the Filming Italy 2025 red carpet at Forte Village Resort on June 21, 2025 in Santa Margherita di Pula, 2022, Miller was arrested twice in Hawaii for disorderly conduct and harassment at a karaoke bar when the actor grabbed a mic from a singing woman and lunged at a man playing darts. They were later arrested again on suspicion of assault for allegedly throwing a chair at a woman, leaving her with a half-inch gash on her forehead. Before those two incidents, Miller was the source of at least 10 police calls in Hawaii for things like loitering, filming people at a gas station and arguing with people in public. They were also charged with felony burglary in Vermont after police said they stole several bottles of alcohol from an empty residence. In June 2022, a Massachusetts mother was granted a temporary order of protection after a judge found that her child faced 'substantial likelihood of immediate danger of harassment' at Miller's hands. Story continues below advertisement Reports also emerged that Miller had been housing a mother and three children at their farmhouse in Vermont, alarming the children's father, who claimed that guns and marijuana were easily accessible on the property. The father claimed he contacted Vermont's Department for Children and Families to carry out a wellness check on the children. The mother alleged that Miller helped her escape an abusive situation with her ex and that the farm has been a 'healing haven' for the family. Miller previously underwent treatment for 'complex mental health issues' in August 2022 and apologized for their actions, acknowledging their erratic behaviour. They said that a period of crisis prompted their recent actions and that they were seeking mental health treatment. 'Having recently gone through a time of intense crisis, I now understand that I am suffering complex mental health issues and have begun ongoing treatment,' Miller explained. 'I want to apologize to everyone that I have alarmed and upset with my past behaviour. I am committed to doing the necessary work to get back to a healthy, safe and productive stage in my life.' — With files from Global News

Utah's Ruth and Nathan Hale Theater Enthralling Audiences with Modern Elation Lighting

LOS ANGELES, June 20, 2025 /CNW/ -- The Ruth and Nathan Hale Theater, also known as The Ruth at dōTERRA, opened its doors earlier this year, and is already making a name for itself as a premier performing arts venue. A culmination of years of planning, the stunning new venue in Pleasant Grove, Utah, is equipped with modern Elation lighting technology. Smith Grand / Lindsay Legacy The theater operated for 35 years as the Hale Center Theater Orem, a small semi-professional theater-in-the-round, but moved to a new, modern space in late 2024. The new venue houses two theaters. At the heart of The Ruth is the exquisite Scott and Karen Smith Grand Theater, a 670-seat space with a proscenium thrust that has the added flexibility to be adapted to a full theater-in-round. The intimate 300-seat Lindsay Legacy Theater is designed to mimic the original intimate venue that its patrons have loved for three decades. Modern Elation lighting graces both theaters, including 40 ARTISTE MONET luminaires and 88 KL PROFILE FC fixtures, supplied by Barbizon Light of the Rockies, and 103 FUZE PENDANT COMPACT fixtures, sold by Brio Technologies. Michael Gray, head of lighting at The Ruth, specified fixture types and quantities. New Lighting System Troy Anderson, Director of Operations at The Ruth, led the technical aspects of the project, including the execution of the lighting installation. The Ruth's lighting system was designed to meet the high demands of a bustling theater that hosts performances six days a week. "We knew we needed a lighting system that could handle the complexity of our productions and provide a wide range of flexibility," Anderson says. "The ARTISTE MONET's versatility allows us to use it as a followspot, a static washlight, a moving head, or an effects light, all in the same production." The ARTISTE MONET is a multi-award-winning 45,000-lumen LED Profile luminaire. Elation's KL PROFILE FC, a full-spectrum ellipsoidal with integrated zoom, also played a critical role in the decision-making process. "The adjustable lensing and the range of features that come with the KL PROFILE were key in its choice," says Anderson. Both fixtures were earmarked for use in the Smith Grand Theater. The FUZE PENDANT COMPACT was selected as the house light for both the Grand Theater and the Lindsay Legacy Theater. The FUZE PENDANT's ability to provide full-color lighting allows the theater to immerse audiences in the world of the production from the moment they enter. "We use a lot of color in our house lighting," Anderson notes. "As patrons enter the theater, we want them to feel like they're already part of the set and the show. The tones and colors we get from the FUZE PENDANT make that possible, and they match with our other lighting fixtures. Color was a critical factor in choosing these lights." Multiple Angles In the Smith Grand Theater, catwalks and the lighting rig encircle the stage in multiple tiers, with an inner ring and outer ring of lights. Michael Gray's goal in creating his initial lighting rep plot, Anderson says, was to hit every point on stage from at least four angles. "The way we light our shows is different from a traditional proscenium setup. In theater-in-the-round, you need to light the stage from multiple angles to ensure every point is covered." A Busy Schedule The Ruth installed the Elation lights themselves, completing the setup just before Ragtime, the first play in the Smith Grand Theater, opened. The theaters maintain a packed schedule, with performances running Monday through Saturday and up to four shows staged daily. An American in Paris runs until July 19 in the Smith Grand Theater, while The Play That Goes Wrong plays in the Lindsay Legacy Theater until August 16. The Ruth and Nathan Hale Theater has quickly established itself as a premier performing arts venue. With an Elation lighting system enhancing the experience, the venue is poised to deliver top-class productions for years to come.
