India and Russia discuss supply of S-400s
New Delhi presently has three of the Russian-made mobile surface-to-air missile systems
Moscow and New Delhi have discussed the supply of the Russian-made S-400 mobile surface-to-air missile systems, the Indian Defense Ministry said in a statement on Friday.
The discussions took place during a meeting between Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh and his Russian counterpart Andrey Belousov on Thursday on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Defense Ministers' meeting in Qingdao, China.
"It was one of the most important recent meetings between the leaders of the two nations, being held in the backdrop of Operation Sindoor and the consequent necessity of augmenting defense production, especially in critical items such as air defense, air-to-air missiles, modern capabilities, and upgrades of air platforms," the Indian Defense Ministry said. "Supply of S-400 systems, Su-30 MKI upgrades, and procurement of critical military hardware in expeditious timeframes were some of the key takeaways of the meeting."
"Operation Sindoor" is the codename given to India's May 7 strikes on alleged terrorist facilities in Pakistan-controlled territory. India has said that the operation was in response to a terrorist attack in India's Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory in April that killed 26 civilians, mostly tourists. The S-400s played an important role in defending Indian air bases and other military installations against retaliatory Pakistani strikes, earning the praise of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
"Platforms like the S-400 have given unprecedented strength to the country," Modi said in an address to the soldiers in May, against the backdrop of an S-400 system. "A strong security shield has become the identity of India."
India presently has taken delivery of three of five S-400 air defense systems it purchased from Russia for $5.43 billion in 2018. The remaining two are slated for delivery in 2026. India's military currently relies heavily on Russian-origin equipment, with around 60% of its arsenal being of Russian make.
New Delhi has a fleet of 259 Sukhoi Su-30MKI aircraft, with 84 planes due to be upgraded with Russian assistance, according to the Hindu. During Thursday's meeting of defense ministers, Belousov stressed the importance of the Russia-India partnership, noting that Moscow's long-term friendship with New Delhi extended into the military-technical sector.

Have started focusing on specific issues and outcomes rather than on parties as institutions, said Congress MP Shashi Tharoor while refusing to comment on the issues going on within the party regarding his stance on Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Talking about his recent visit in the aftermath of Operation Sindoor, Tharoor said:'In other places, we actually were able to get some very high-placed people to say not only that they respected and supported India's right of self-defence, but they actually commended the restrained manner of our response, that we could have been much worse…So I would say that, by and large, they were all very understanding.' 'But I would usually end by conveying that they should not be surprised that if this (terrorist attack) happens again, we too would do this again… And I believe we left everybody in no doubt about our feelings and our intentions,' he added. Speaking about the Emergency imposed by the erstwhile Congress government 50 years ago, Tharoor said that it made him change the decision on taking the UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) exams for a job in the foreign services. He said that when the Emergency was declared, he was in Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy studying International Affairs on a scholarship in 1975. Tharoor said that he had a roommate who worked as a journalist and continued to 'moonlight' as one and would bring 'reams of telex stories' on the happenings in India. Embrace ideas, values of Constitution from Preamble Park: Fadnavis, Gadkari
1 2 Nagpur: Bharat Ratna Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar crafted the Indian Constitution by blending global and timeless Indian values, with the Preamble being its core. If citizens embrace the values enshrined in the Preamble, 90% of the country's issues could be resolved permanently, said chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday. Fadnavis was speaking during the inauguration of the Constitution Preamble Park and a full-length statue of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Bhushan Gavai on the premises of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar School of Law. Union minister for road transport and highways, Nitin Gadkari , said the park will spread the Constitution's fundamental ideas among students and the public. Fadnavis stated that it is a matter of great pride and satisfaction for him that the Constitution Preamble Park and Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar's statue are being unveiled at the same law college where he studied constitutional principles and put them into practice. The CM stressed that completion and public opening of this park during the Amrit Mahotsav year of the Constitution is particularly significant. "The Indian Constitution has established a robust democracy, ensuring freedom of expression, fundamental rights, equal opportunities, and a system for delivering justice. This has enabled India to become the world's fourth-largest economy. The Preamble is the essence of the Constitution, and its values need to be embraced by all citizens," he said. Fadnavis expressed confidence that the park will inspire everyone who visits it. He also announced that a new building for the School of Law would be constructed, and all necessary facilities would be provided for the park. Gadkari said Nagpur University took the initiative to establish the Constitution Preamble Park, which was realised with financial support from the state govt and public participation. He highlighted that the university has produced eminent personalities like a Prime Minister, while Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Law College has given the country two CJIs. "The establishment of the park adds to this legacy," he said. Social justice minister Sanjay Shirsat discussed the financial and other support provided by the social justice ministry for the park's establishment. Senior social activist and chairman of the Constitution Preamble Park Committee, Girish Gandhi, provided details of the park's development stages. Spymaster behind Op Sindoor is RAW chief
NEW DELHI: Seasoned IPS officer Parag Jain, a specialist on Pakistan and China, was appointed to lead the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), on the back of his pivotal role in the collection of crucial intelligence which shaped the precise execution of Operation Sindoor . The Centre issued an order Saturday in this regard after the Cabinet approved Jain's appointment, ushering in a new tech-focused era for India's external intelligence agency. He will have a two-year tenure after taking over on July 1. A 1989-batch Punjab cadre IPS officer, Jain succeeds Ravi Sinha, who retires June 30. Jain, currently heading the Aviation Research Centre (ARC) in the agency, is known within the agency as 'a man who listens' and 'who gets things done,' people who know him closely said. 'He is a field-tested man who has sharp thinking and operates in silence without much hullabaloo,' said an officer. Jain was the field commissioner in the cabinet secretariat (official name for RAW) and posted in Jammu during the air strikes in Balakot and abrogation of Article 370. His key stints were in Nepal, Canada, where his team tracked Khalistani outfits and their members, and in Sri Lanka during its economic crisis. 'In his new role, he will prioritise leveraging technology for advanced intelligence collection, monitoring diaspora communities, and developing strategies to counter hybrid warfare tactics, particularly in response to the escalating threats of disinformation warfare posed by China and Pakistan,' a govt officer said. With experience in leading the Pakistan and Canada desks, Jain has been an asset for the agency for the last 14 years, spearheading many technical-and-human-intelligence-based operations, sources said. As chief of ARC in the cabinet secretariat, Jain is credited with the introduction of new technology in unmanned surveillance using drones, besides aerial monitoring to support special operations. While Jain has his task cut out as the head of the agency, China and Pakistan post-Op Sindoor are being considered his key focus areas. His appointment is also being seen as a strong message to Canada. Jain found himself in Canada's crosshairs following the assassination of terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Prior to joining RAW, Jain had a distinguished policing career in Punjab, serving in prominent positions such as senior superintendent of police in Chandigarh, deputy inspector general of Ludhiana Range, and SP of Patiala, Mansa, and Bhatinda districts.
