GEORGE TOWN: A teacher lost RM890,000 after falling victim to a phone scam syndicate that falsely accused the victim of being involved in money laundering, in an incident reported here recently.
Penang deputy police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said the 59-year-old woman filed a police report yesterday at the Commercial Crime Investigation Division of the Northeast District Police Headquarters.
'According to the victim, on May 10, while at her home in George Town, she received a phone call from an unknown number, a man who introduced himself as a representative of a bank, then told her that a credit card had been misused in her name.
'The woman denied having the credit card, and the call was supposedly connected to an individual claiming to be a police officer in Johor who said that she was involved in a money laundering case,' he said in a statement.
He said the police officer then asked her to transfer her money for audit purposes, and that the money would be returned after the investigation was completed.
She claimed the police officer even threatened that an arrest warrant would be issued if she failed to do so, he added.
Mohd Alwi said the victim made 27 online money transfer transactions to 23 different accounts from May 19 to June 5, involving a total of RM890,000. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code, which is for cheating.

Mino Ersyad Arshad, 49, who appeared before judge Elsie Primus, was charged under Section 14 (a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017. He was accused of kissing the 12-year-old girl inside a car in Sepanggar during midnight on August 18, 2024. The court fixed July 30 for pre-trial case management. In the meantime, the accused was released on RM15,000 bail with RM10,000 deposit and two local sureties. He was represented by counsel Hamid Ismail. Meanwhile, an unemployed man was jailed for 12 months by a Magistrate's Court here on Tuesday for injuring his sister. Magistrate Wan Farrah Fariza Wan Ghazali imposed the sentence on Ridzuan Roslan, 22, after he pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 323, punishable under Section 326A, both of the Penal Code. Ridzuan admitted to hurting his 31-year-old sister, who is an entrepreneur, at an apartment here on April 24. The court heard that an investigation revealed that the incident happened after the victim told her brother not to shout inside the apartment. However, Ridzuan, who was angry, punched his sister's head and strangled her. He had then pulled her left hand which hit the house grill. In mitigation, the unrepresented Ridzuan prayed for a lenient sentence and informed the court that he is jobless. In reply, the prosecution urged the court to impose a deterrent sentence and said that the accused had no previous conviction.

Police bust RM21.85mil drug lab making narcotics-laced vape liquids in Ampang

SHAH ALAM: Police have uncovered an illegal drug-processing lab used to produce narcotics-laced vape liquids, seizing drugs worth RM21.85 million in two separate raids on condominium units in Ampang on June 25. Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said the first raid led to the arrest of four people, including three foreigners, along with the confiscation of various drugs and vape processing equipment. "A search of the premises uncovered seven vape cartridges suspected to contain cocaine (about 57 grams), 2.7 kilograms (kg) of suspected powdered cocaine and 124.6 kg of liquid believed to contain MDMA (methylenedioxymethamphetamine)," he said during a press conference at the Selangor Police Headquarters today. The second raid, conducted the same day at a different condominium unit, resulted in the seizure of 41 grams of dried cannabis, 140 grams of MDMA-laced vape liquid and 56 grams of suspected powdered cocaine. Hussein said a 28-year-old foreign man was arrested in the second operation and subsequently tested positive for morphine during a urine test. Initial investigations revealed that one of the foreign suspects acted as the chemist, while the others served as runners and assistants. The syndicate is believed to have been active since October 2024. Background checks showed that two of the foreign male suspects detained in the first raid had prior criminal records, including document forgery, criminal intimidation, fraud, drug-related offences, public disorder and assault. The syndicate's modus operandi involved renting two condominium units, each at RM6,000 per month, which were converted into laboratories to process drug-infused vape liquids for distribution to both local and international markets, Hussein said. He added that the group's estimated monthly profit from the operation was around RM200,000. Police also seized vehicles, local and foreign currencies, laptops, jewellery and branded watches, bringing the total value of seizures and confiscated assets to RM21.9 million. All suspects have been remanded for seven days from June 26 to assist investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which provides for the mandatory death penalty upon conviction. - BERNAMA
